UPDATE SCHEDULE: Hiatus due to college
I made this fiction for fun. It was a way for me to express my creativity and increase my mastery of English language. Therefore, I will refrain from strict schedules that can stress me out and lower the quality of my work. Meaning, I may miss some update time as I also have school to do.
Samael endured a harrowing childhood marked by loss and betrayal. His parents, once devout believers in the gods, found no divine salvation in their darkest hours. Left with no one to rely on at a young age, Samael was sold into slavery, a fate that subjected him to life of relentless torment and agony.
Used as a mere plaything, Samael’s days were filled with endless suffering. He clung to the hope that one day, the gods would bestow their blessings upon him. Yet, even as those around him received divine favor, Samael remained forsaken and powerless. Left in the darkness of his cell to rot, never to see the light again.
In a world governed by might and riddled with chaos, Samael realized that freedom could only be achieved through strength— strength that even the gods would fear. Fueled by desperation and revenge, he went to seek a power unparalleled, an unstoppable force that could obliterate any obstacle in his path. A way to shatter the shackles binding him.
Living his entire life submerged in darkness, Samael finally understood that the dark is his friend. And so it called to him.
The endless darkness called...
The Void...
"Void Spawn" follows Samael’s quest for vengeance and liberation as he wields the power of the Void. In a realm where the lines between good and evil blur, in a world where power holds dominion, Samael must navigate his inner demons and external foes. Will he become the saviour of a broken world or be consumed and become the very thing he sought to destroy?

This fiction is a wonderful work in progress. With intense scenes and with an obvious depth to the world building and lore this is a story that can only grow more brilliantly as it advances.
Style 5
The style right of the door is a grim fantasy brings out a dark reality with little to brighten the mood immediately. This actually works in its favor as the story develops and creates a unique experience for the reader. It lost half a star due to the fact that the scenery in the fiction from what I have read so far feels glossed over. Though it gained that back because there are illustrations included which is absolutely fantastic for the story.
Story 5
The story itself is compelling as it follows characters you can't help but root for in this dark fantasy. Every chapter is a new chance to get drawn into the the events of this world. There are a number of things that feel vague which seems like an artistic choice in order to set up for later reveals. It could be a detractor for some, but the story is potent enough that I am willing to let the tale unfold naturally.
Grammar 5.
If there were any distinct grammatical errors I missed them in this current reading. The author has done some edits based on older feedback so I could only assume the grammar is on point.
Character 4.5
I adore the characters and their dynamics. If you want to hate someone you hate them. If you want to adore them you do as well. They are well written and enjoyable. The only reason it lost a half a star from me is because the main character is introduced as young and often referred to as a boy. However, throughout the chapters I have read he swears frequently.
I am personally uncomfortable with this idea. However, that in itself doesn't detract from the story, and as I have said before this book so far is painted pretty darkly. So while the foul language makes sense, and ir shouldn't deter others. It was just something I couldn't personally give a full 5 stars on.
All in all I am already hook - CaptainJimmy42Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0The Story is very well written and filled with many deep descriptions to paint the scenes in your imagination. While the details are painting a vivid picture, the lack of understanding we have about the world makes the MC, which just makes you read more to learn more.
Style is a smooth and comfortable format with a bit of a decently long chapter length. I haven't read a story with this writing style in a moment, so it's a nice refresher that gives me the feeling of holding a nice thick paper back novel in my hands.
Grammar is crisp and clean with nothing that I can spot wrong, so full marks.
Character, this is a tricky one, from a subjective point of view, the character work is really well done. Their descriptions along with the mannerisms of the bandits made them feel a bit more real then I'm used to. The MC is a kid, which personally is not my preference, but I won't let that negativity affect my review.
Overall, this is a dark start in a dark world of mystery and villains where a young lad hopes to escape to a brighter future. It is worth checking out. - Den ForesttRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Style: I really like the style of your story like the Shadows danced under the Bonfire is such a cool description and there's multiple of such instances where I found myself to be wowed by such vivid scenery writing. Kudos to the author.
Story: The story is amazing well crafted with every detail paid attention to and well designed. I particularly like Samael's journey as while I don't usually enjoy gory stories, it's a nice writing that sucks me in.
Grammar: I don't find many particular faults in this area, if at all any. The story is very well written with no glaring grammatical errors. I can enjoy the story fully because it does not break the immersion through the grammar.
Characters: The characters all have great depth and seems realistically portrayed from my point of view. They exude a charming quality to them as they are hyper realistic from the descriptions and yet mystical enough to feel like I'm reading a great fantasy story. It is great.
Overall, I would recommend this story if you like vivid descriptions and imagery. It is a great read for your time. Again kudos to the author for his great effort in the story. You should give this a go. - Haviel2102Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0I like this story, that is not for the faint of heart, but it is an incredibly compelling read that masterfully blends raw, visceral emotion with a burgeoning fantasy world. From the opening chapter, the story plunges you into the depths of young Samael's despair, making his suffering and subsequent fight for survival almost palpable. This initial darkness makes his moments of resilience and the flicker of hope he finds in companionship, particularly with Lilith, all the more impactful.
The narrative excels at portraying Samael's internal struggles as he's forced to confront horrific realities and make impossible choices. The introduction of LitRPG elements is seamlessly woven into his journey of self-discovery and power acquisition, adding an exciting layer of progression without overshadowing the emotional core. The world-building is intriguing, gradually revealing ancient ruins, powerful artifacts like the Crimson Raven, and mysterious factions that hint at a much larger, perilous world.
What truly sets "Void Spawn" apart is its ability to evoke such a strong empathetic response. You don't just read about Samael's pain and rage; you feel it. The bonds he forms, fragile yet fierce, become beacons in a narrative that doesn't shy away from darkness, making his quest not just for survival, but for meaning and connection, an unforgettable experience. This is a story that will grip you and leave you anxiously awaiting the next chapter in Samael's harrowing, yet hopeful, adventure. - Jesse WorcesterRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0One of my favorites that I have discovered on Royal. Plot is fun with cool themes. Grammar gets better as you progress and does take away from the badass story. Progression is nice. Mc I would call Op BUT has had several moments of not being the strongest in the room and lots of room to grow. Honestly badass. Super fun to read. Please keep it up, excited to see how this whole story ends.
- MaloryRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I know it doesn't say anything good about my own fragile mental state, but I enjoyed how violent this piece was. This is a novel that is absolutely all about the certainty of immediate and instant retribution for those who mess with the MC. And I am absolutely here for it. I know there's a trope in much of the fiction on RR that the bad guy needs to be defeated at the end of the novel. Here, karma is very much a bitch very quickly ...
Style - this is quick. The action starts and never lets up and it's wise for you to strap yourself in and just let it happen. As mentioned above, things get killed here and die in various bloody ways. That is absolutely the style. Don't come here for a chilled time.
Grammar - it's fine. I think there's been some rewriting judging from the comments and that work has been worth it.
Character - this is all about Samael, and - as far as I have read - to a lesser extent Lillith. Most of the other nameless people we come across get their arses handed to them by the MC. And, as discussed, I'm fine with that. I'm sure some deeper nuance will come later, but for now, the see it / kill it vibe is working for me.
Story - there are some nice little hints of what is coming in the early exchanges and of a interesting back story that is to be filled in. There's plenty here.
Overall - this is brutal and a lot of fun. Add it to your reading list and expect to read about a lot of blood! - Mesa MesaRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Wow, this was a Thriller with a capital T. Who doesn't love a good old prison break (or dungeon in this case) for the opening scene?
The story quickly pulls you into an adrenaline-fueled rollercoaster, gripping the reader and holding them in its tense atmosphere. The plot aligns perfectly with the nature of the story, and its vivid descriptions conjure up perfect visualisations. Some scenes may prove to be rather disturbing for a peace-loving reader, but the novel does not market itself as one. For us thrill-seeking junkies, this is right up our alley.
Character introductions are slow but steady, allowing our protagonist, Samael, to bathe in screen time. This is a blessing, for Samael proves to be a likable character pretty quickly. His monologues are easy to follow, and he maintains a realistic mindset for someone in his situation. Some of his feats may seem a little farfetched at the start, but I would attribute it to the mysterious power system which are obviously clued to be elaborated on later.
Extra credit to Samael's inner monologue - I thought they were very well done. Pacing-wise: No issues either. Every scene has a clear reason to exist, whether its to develop Samael or to describe the horrors of the world around him, allowing the reader to stay engaged to the narrative.
Grammar for the most part is consistent, with a couple of tense errors, but nothing to write home about.
Overall a very solid piece of work that I highly recommend to people that are eager for a dark, violent tale of a broken boy seeking to redeem himself. - cloude237Royal Road★★★★★ 4.5A good, action packed, quite dark story. The tone is increasingly becoming grimmer with each chapter.
Style: The slightly grim tone, as well as the perspective unfolding precisely through the eyes of the protagonist, unravelling little by little, created the right amount of grim anticipation. The story telling is really good. Particularly the clear cut narrative style, and the main light over the main protagonist. It became a little too fast paced in the chapter six and five - the description could have been dwelled upon for a while it make it more fluent with the rest of the development.
Grammar: Nothing too glaringly obvious, that I could easily spot. No comments there. The choice of vocabulary was quite apt, sticking to its atmosphere.
Story: The background is really dark. I could feel the protagonists hopeless situation, his dread and the almost sparing options for any possible future. He lives in a very grim world. There are many people, or beings who can easily dictate his life. Since, till the chapter I read there is no clear giveaway as to the nature of the Protagonists power or its origin, I think the background is well thought of and the pace of the unfolding of the background, quite good.
Character: The character build up is good. The cowardliness in the beginning, the sudden eruption with rage and vengeance. With a clear backstory, it wasn't difficult to trace the nature of the protagonist. But again, the sudden closeness of the girl Lillith and him, felt too sudden, to me. He was still writhing with rage and distrust and he became quite close with the 'victim'. But it is not implausible. Just a little too fast for the Character which I made out of him. But I could be wrong.
Overall, I liked the tone of the story. The grim and dark tone, as if no sunlight ever reaches the floor of the world in which the characters dwelt. Very apt ambience for the theme as well as great character build-up. - fantasyretreatRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5The story revolves around Samael, the protagonist of the story. A young boy who's lost all he cared for. It's a brutal and bloody story. And I think the author should use the grimdark tag. There might be people wanting to read the story but might not be able to find it through search.
The story is a fast-paced, action-packed story that has a tendency to keep you rooting for Samael. You just want him to succeed. And I mean this in a very positive way, coz the kid went through hell. And when he met someone he wanted to protect, he protected her like he would his flesh and blood.
This lets you know that the character, Samael, has an inherent mindset of principles and values. This makes him very much more human than many of the MCs in stories you'd read on this site. He doesn't just kill and he's not overpowered (at least not in the first few chapters). He understands that there are monsters in his world who wear the skins of humans and do unspeakable things, and he makes a choice not to be like them - even though he would become one himself, but not one like them. And like I said above, this just makes you root for him.
I think Hitmark did a really great job there. To be able to draw out the emotions of your readers is something that takes effort.
Now for the bad parts:
The story is fairly new and I think it could use a bit more proofreading. A free Grammarly extension for desktop or keyboard for mobile could go a long way in finding and correcting errors and making the reading experience seamless.
The style of writing is okay (could be better). Grammar works pari passu with style to give readers that seamless reading experience. But they both have not been properly synced. One more thing the author needs to work on.
The points of view can be better. The author needs to spend some time separating POVs so readers enjoy the story better. This in my opinion is the weightiest of structural imperfections, yet it would still not take away from your reading experience.
Void - x_luminous_xRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5This story depicts Samuael, a very unfortunate boy and his journey onto a very dark, unfortunate path carved by the hands of fate...
This story gripped me right from the get go. So far, every chapter features pulse-racing action, but it is carried by it's MC, being a dark story carried by its introspection of the human psyche. Samuael is an unfortunate victim of fate forced onto a dark path, however, not all his choices are ones that you can sympathise with. Samuael clearly has some darkness within him, yet it is explored like a slowly stirring storm gradually consuming him. Despite this, Samuael retains his humanity; he kills, yet, he still wishes a peaceful afterlife even for the man who abuses him. Whether it will remain that way remains to be seen as a lot of thus story seems to focus on the darkness slowly consuming Samuael's psyche, but for those who love morally grey characters, this MC will absolutely.
Story: The main meat of this story seems to be Samuael and his journey, which absolutely delivers. For lovers of dark fantasy this story will be a treat, with many things at the background such as dark human experiments which will pose many questions. I'm reading at chapter 4, so we've not really touched much on the stuff about the gods in the summary, but I'm really looking forward to his rise to power and what he might do with it with his morality already growing rather questionable.
Characters: As touched upon above, Samuael is a great character, and for those who love questionable morality like me, he will deliver. Despite this, he still has his vulnerabilities though. It is clear he does not like killing. He's not afraid to punish a bad person though and that makes for many constant thrill rides.
The only reason the character rating is not higher is because of some villains that are a bit clichéd and one note. The wizard from chapter one is the most egregious example of that but please do not let that put you off, there's a lot to enjoy here.
Style: The s
