Video Game Developer in a Cultivation World
Community Rating
Description
James was a hustler who'd succeeded in retiring early, only for the pandemic to ruin all of his plans. He spent two years locked up inside playing video games and watching movies, only to be spiritually abducted just as the situation started improving. Now his name is Jin and he's a part of the Illusion Room Sect. A cultivation sect that creates scenarios for combat-focused cultivators to hone their skills. In other words, fully immersive video games. Will the gaming knowledge of his past life help him succeed in such a cut-throat world? Will he manage to break his two-year pandemic induced dry-spell? And most importantly, will he ever manage to surpass the rank of cannon fodder?

- MerkureyRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I've enjoyed the story so far. Most cultivation story's are the same, gain power, fight enemy, with some fluff or discovery in-between. I like how the main focus of this one is the game development, with the cultivation taking a bit of a back seat. Some things I'm hoping for in the future:1. An entirely new/original game premiss rather than just a copy from the MC's previous life.2. While I'm happy that the cultivation is not the main focus, a closer look at the process of cultivation would be appreciated. Something to show rather than tell that "this is a cultivation world." Nothing more than a chapter or two at a time.3. The use of illutions during combat.I'm exited for the rest of the book and the continuation of the series. Thank you for the story!
- R.BRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Genuine good read, chugged all available chapters in one go. A fresh take on cultivation and 'game dev' trope.
World is credible, if lightly described / explored. Characters have personality and depth, they are attaching.
Pacing is good, my only whining will be the vocabulaty: it sometimes feels too technical for a cultivation world, though credible for that sect.
Recommend reading.
More chapters though, thanks. - ArcanaVitaeRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The concept of Illusion Rooms is really interesting but something I can see being used in a cultivation world. They're basically commonly used as training rooms and for other purposes. It's also mental cultivation which isn't really something I see explored a lot.
The main character being a game designer is really interesting, he's taken a lot of inspiration and his methodology from that background and has done pretty well for himself.
I also like the fact that he's not a combat focused character, sure he's learning how to fight for his projects and self defense but he's a crafting cultivator and his focus is his cultivation and his work not fighting.
I'm looking forward to seeing the main character advance his cultivation and get into more and more obscure stuff like more techniques and Dao stuff, this is mostly due to me knowing the author is really good at cooking stuff like that up.
Also something I didn't mention was that the characters and world building is really great. The characters are feel like people who even if they're cultivators with a long lifespan and experience are still people even if they're shaped by those facts. Also this feels like both a traditional cultivation world and an analysis/deconstruction. There's the traditional Face culture and JUNIOR YOU DARE stuff but there's also the fact that there are people going about living their lives and doing their own things. - DeltamasterRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0A well thought out and this far interesting work.
The lack of any "heavenly treasures" and the fact that his perogitive is making "illusion rooms" (training Sims using past life/game ideas) is a refreshing change from finding magical cultivation manual and trying to plot armour to godhood.
The recent story arc about the mad monks has also been thoroughly enjoyable. I look forward to seeing this continue. - BurntWangRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The story is very captivating and the appeal is quite obvious, the application of the games we've all come to love inserted into a cultivation world. If you enjoy watching people play games that are made for masochists, then this is for you. So far its been Dark Souls( hopefully it gets expanded upon as its just a scenario as of chapter 14) but followed by Outlast. May there be many more tortuous in store for these sect plebiansTruly evil ;)
- Flea04Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Dear writer bor902,If you're reading this review, PLEASE don't stop.This... is so damn good. I followed the story to patreon multiple times. The MC Jin is hilarious. The side characters and multiple POV's entertain me on a level I'm unable to explain.I'm already following the author on both apps and it's the 1st story i look for when I update my following page for new chapters. It's something I will definitely be rereading multiple times. If it comes out on audible, I'm buying it immediately.

- JohnPlumeRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I really love video game and movie development stories. Stories like Black Tech Internet Cafe System and Cultural Invasion In Different World were really engaging for me. Maybe not everyone will share my opinion, but when I saw that story with a similar style and great grammar popped up on Royal Road, I was extremely excited. Now, just because I like the story style/genre, does not automatically mean I am a fan. In my opinion, for a video game development novel to succeed, the story can't just endlessly parade a slew of games and have disposable/forgettable characters say how awesome the game/movie/book/cultural product is. At that point you are just reading a series of vague reviews rather than a story in its own right. Many readers might fear that will be the case with story. Do not be afraid fellow readers because even with just 11 chapters, I can tell that this story has the key elements needed to make not only video game development stories but any story interesting. Those elements are original content and engaging challenges to make the journey interesting.Even though the story is about a character developing famous video games, the author has not neglected creating a vast fantastical world with its own rules, problems, and culture. Take the weapon covered in the first "game", a cross spear. On Earth spears are common weapons both historically and in various stories. However, in the world that bor902 has created, spears and the like are not the cheap, common, and frankly practical weapons that they are on Earth. He has created material and crafting limitations that are logical for the world yet has resulted in a culture where spears as a weapon are non-existent. This not only adds an engaging sense of world building, but in turn also makes the choice of game even more meaningful to the original world/story as the characters are both surprised by such a weapon and might develop in new ways because of it.This worldbuilding and game choice also adds tangible chall
- LadyFffireRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0xianxia can get veryyyy dry as a genre at times, the same basic layout repeated a million times over. this is not that.
the main character is interesting and fun to read about, it's obvious that more exciting adventures await and more illusion rooms will be created. id imagine that it will gradually go in a more multiplayer direction as he improves in cultivation and skill and the only possible issue i see is extreme late-game in that things could get a bit repetitive but its likely that wont be the case given the quality of writing keeps up. - Ranger RavenRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0A very interesting read, I normally avoid cultivation stories like the plague but this was a really good way for me to dip my toes into the genre.Couldn’t put it down until I was fully caught up, I’m really curious to see what other kinds of video game worlds you can bring to life.PS. Please write more, thank you.
