Veos, The Story of a Dungeon

Description
STUB NOTICE
A new Dungeon comes into being underneath the ground of Nerian-Silex. It will follow its strange instincts and system to be able to expand, grow, and test those who enter its domain. Yet there is something different about this particular Dungeon. Something it itself doesn't know, yet instantly noticeable to those beyond its border.
Follow along as this Dungeon attempts to fulfill its purpose, and see how the rest of the world reacts to its strangeness compared to other Dungeons. A strangeness that might be the key of breaking through the barrier of nine. Or one that might be the spark that ignites a continent-spanning war. And that isn't even mentioning the Aberrant, whose breaches into the world seem to be getting more and more frequent.
Though how much the Dungeon would care we'll have to see. Right now it's busy carving out an underground castle to listen to the cacophony overhead.

- keeganashleyliveRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story is not in a genre that I typically read; I’m not familiar with dungeon core stories. However, I am doing a review swap for the author and want to give a fair representation of what I’ve read, so I will rank it only based on that. This story is highly number-focused and building-focused. The overall premise is not fully fleshed-out yet in the first five chapters (which I wouldn’t expect in any other genre, so I won’t expect it here either). All we know is that the main character’s in this seeming void and that he can create out of this void. What stuck with me through the chapters I read was the character’s exuberance. Because the narrative is so numbers heavy, this book could have easily come off as dry and unentertaining. However, the character’s sheer enthusiasm and excitement as the dungeon is built piece by piece and creature by creature make this an entertaining read. You want to see what happens next and each piece of the puzzle added, somehow, feels very rewarding.
The writing is very casual and easy-to-read. It flows nicely and, sometimes, even feels semi-psychological with the questions the character is asking in the beginning. If you’re a fan of stats, progression and dungeon core---especially ones that favor a lot of blue boxes and upleveling---this is your cup of tea. It’s a good read! I don’t want to dock it just because it’s not my typical one. - LingeringLurkerRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I've never truly written an advanced review before, but I'm going to give it a try here.
I'm going to start where I feel Veos' strength really shines: The Characters. V_Storm has done a great job at characterizing the different characters and their points of view. Veos in particular has its impulsiveness and exuberance shine through. It makes decisions in the heat of the moment. It hates unfairness and what he views as cheating. Other characters we meet, and see from their perspective, are also very easy to empathize with. They have motivations, some less obvious than others, and they act in ways that are consistent with those motivations.
Next is story: It's a LitRPG Dungeon Core story. There are blue boxes, there are stats and skills. The dungeon has floors and bosses. It isn't exactly breaking the mold there. But what worldbuilding that we've seen so far both meets expectations, and subverts them in interesting ways. We know little more about the world than Veos does, and each tidbit added only makes you want to learn more. At this point we've received hints towards future plots, and how the Dungeon is likely to develop moving forwards. All interesting stuff I'm looking forward to.seeing more of.
Style: It's straightforward, it flows well, and I like how different POVs feel distinct from one another.
Grammar: I can't say that I've noticed any grammatical errors during my reading, and the prose seems like it flows quite well.
Overall: 'Veos, the story of the dungoen', is a story that lives up to it's name. This is a story, about the story a dungeon core wants to tell, and it's dungeon is the canvas upon which its narrative is woven. It may not always make the most optimal decisions, but it makes decisions that feel correct to itself. And as it does so, we get to see glimpses of the ripples that Veos' actions cause.
We haven't yet seen exactly how adventurers will interact with Veos when things stabilize, but I can't wait to see where things go from here. - Falling LeavesRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0There really is quite a bit I can say about Veos, from the as yet still partially revealed class system with glyphs and skills, to talents and special items. So instead I'll try to keep it to the more 'unique' aspects that makes Veos so different.
One is the system. By default every other story, or at least those I've read, have a system designed to push people to grow, yet also one that throws lives away with a callousness that exceeds any war criminal. This system though actually helps, in all the usual ways, but even with things like encouragement, which is sometimes more effective than throwing someone into the deep end to see if they sink or swim.
Another thing I particularly liked is how the dungeon focusses more on it's duty, instead of obsessing over power. Dungeons are to push people to grow, and Veos takes that very seriously. Veos also has an impact on the world outside without being a planet spanning superpower or a murderhobo, and is genuinely beneficial to the world as well.
The style is great. I didn't even notice at first, but every chapter from Veos's POV is in first person, while chapters following other characters are all in third person. The flow and feel this creates is fantastic.
I have a strong feeling that there is far more to come regarding plot, so this is probably too early for a proper review, but the story has been great so far. It also has many facets, as we follow Veos's growth, the designing of dungeon levels, and follow characters in the outside world, learning about the world that the story takes place in. Abberants and some political plots have been hinted at, possibly even threatening existence and the system itself, but we have to wait and see. Oh no...
The grammer is practically flawless. When grammer is good, I'd usually just say that it didn't distract me, but I seriously only spotted 2 errors in the entire story so far, and both were obviously autocorrect errors, not the author. I am genuinely interested to know what V_Storm - QueenInRagsRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0To start off, this is a wonderful dungeon core story with great pacing. I do quite enjoy how worldbuilding is done in a quick and sufficient way. Not glazing over details to fast, yet also not spending ten chapters watching adventurers stumble about.
Overall, I quite enjoy how the author of this story has started to broaden the world. Allowing themselves some freedom in what to focus on. Whether that be on worldbuilding, dungeon building, or even taking a chapter here and there to explore some of the interesting forbidden secrets that seem to be seeping their way into the dungeon. - RaspRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I very much like the idea of the dungeon telling a story and being upset when something goes in the way of the telling. Rather risking his live than not telling his story. :-)
The system is believable and the Edicts are a nice touch.
The Story Makes Me Smile. - SergeantZRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The dungeon core story has been pretty well-established at this point, so I think that it's impressive when one of these stories is able to set itself apart form others of its like. This story has interesting elements that I don't recall seeing in other dungeon core stories and, if handled well, those elements could make this something special.
The story is still early on, and there is the occasional grammatical error, but I read everything available without pause. For me, that makes it a 5 star story. - ShadowOfWarRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This book presents an enthralling tale with a protagonist who masterfully navigates the fine line between showing mercy and transforming the dungeon into an outright lethal snare from the onset. What sets this story apart is its deviation from the typical dungeon narrative where the protagonist forms an unbreakable bond as "best friends" with the humans outside. Instead, it carves its unique path. The novel's most striking feature is the dungeon's capacity to conjure guardians, each with their distinct, rich backstories, which is nothing short of astonishing. This innovative concept has completely captivated me. The author should definitely continue on this path; the potential for greatness is unmistakable! P.S. please don't turn this into a harem story, i beg you.
- TheEnigmaScribeRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I read the first book here on royal road, and then more recently (today, in fact) on kindle unlimited, and if you've already got that I recommend reading it. It's a tad bit messy (typos and some mislabeled stuff) but if you check the context, you can probably figure out what it's trying to say. Regardless of those issues it's still one of my favorite series I've read on here, since the system's presentation/function in this world seems nicely fleshed out.
As for currently! Not much to comment on yet, but I'm definitely paying attention, because if all the information we need to make the proper deductions is in play, we're soon to get some key context to really understand what we're in for. - PreistestDragonRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5how the story has gone thus far has been enjoyable. its hard for me to discribe it in more detail. i just simply like how the author is doing the dungeon building. HOWEVER, we are now at the point where the story either hits the ground running, or trips and dies. we have reached the point where we get "adventurers" checking out the dungeon, and i hope the author handles the interaction well.
depending on how the author handles this next chapter or two will determine if i change my review to a 3star and never read the novel again, or change it to a 5 star and continue reading for what i hope is for many many months.
GL.
ok the text above is from my review as of chapter 6. from here it is based on the dungeons first encounter with adventurers. fight was great the tesion was breaking the fourth wall as i felt like i was watching the fight unfold live. not worth 5 stars but thats only because i felt a certain death should have happened. but otherwise it is deserving a 4.5.
now dont let this review stop you from giving it a 5 star if you feel it deserves it. i however am confident that the author is onto a good novel that might just one day get me to give it the full 5 myself. IF the story doesnt get the dreaded hiatus tag.
