Valkyrie's Shadow

Description
In the wake of the Battle of Katze Plains, the banner of Ainz Ooal Gown flies proudly over the city of E-Rantel. The Sorcerous Kingdom has entered the world’s stage to the clamour of death and devastation; the surrounding nations fearfully prepare even as they reel from its calamitous debut. Within the borders of the newly annexed realm, its Human subjects cower in their homes as the Undead openly walk the streets and stalk the lands. Yet, when a destitute noble finds herself under the auspices of an unlikely benefactor, events are set into motion that will resound over the world for ages to come.
A kingdom builder based on the events and setting of Kugane Maruyama’sOverlord. In a fantasy world where beings of matchless power are transmigrated from the arbitrary existence of a game, Valkyrie’s Shadow chronicles the lives of the natives whose reality has been turned upside down by their advent. It is the tale of a nation created by the whims of a supreme sovereign, and his unstoppable servants who each have their own, often twisted, interpretations of their Master’s Will.
There is no victory in strength; no miracles wrought from magic that will save them: only the inexorable advance of a new world order where those who secure a place of service within will find themselves turned against the world that they once knew.
[Slow buildup. Methodical storytelling with a focus on well-rounded kingdom building and character development.]

- All Father AinzRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0It is a really nice story over all. The characters are developed enough for me to follow and not so much put into them that I get bored with listening about them (Oh I listen to this on YouTube). Like anything I would change a little here and there, but it is not so much that I would say this is not worth reading or listening to. I would say so much as it would be nice to see put into a manga (but with my fixes :) ).
- GenPowerEveryNightRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0almost every aspect of the story is very, very enjoyable. characters, action, progression, different perspectives played out perfectly, an amazing and involved story. very, very nice.
The balance between the main characters and the different PoV's leads to a vast world and sense of what is going on as the Sorcerous Kingdom develops, and the main character's perspective (Ludmila) was the most enjoyable for me. Never a dull moment with interactions between the canon characters of Overlord and the created characters throughout the novel. - HalwarRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Style:
Great story that stays on focus most of the time. The only two issues are (was, for this one) jumping great distances between new MCs in the begining of the story when everyone were introdused (aka game of thrones, same problem with a huge cast) and big chunks of worldbuilding/infodumping from time to time. To be fair, Overlord has a very complex world and this fanfic explores it in great depth from individual to statecraft standpoint with great cosistency.
Story:
Story is just great. A lot of characters, old places from different perspectives, a lot of action or empire building and it is complimentary to original without being duplicative in content.
Gramnar:
Very pleasing read fo far. English is not my first language so maybe I'm not realy qualified to judge, but it's good.
Character:
And finaly the characters. They are just great. From old, canon, cast to new everyone just so rich. You have different races that realy feels different instead of beeing reskined humans. Hell, even humans in different countries with different sircumstances are alive with character. Development is consistent and interesting. Almost everyone is interesting to read about (sorry happy farm, looking at you) and you rarely want to skip someone and go back to following different MC when main cast is finaly introdused. - HereToBrowseRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0In more ways than one, this piece of fanfiction is in a position to be competitive with the source material.
The style is at this point solidified and is almost always maintained at the high bar it had set from the start.
Story is engaging, and seems to be well planned out in advance. Callbacks to details from far far earlier are particularly enjoyable
The characters are perhaps the strongest point of this story. The author had given himself a lot of room to explore their individual journeys, and boy o boy does he explore them. I was particularly interested in the demihumans' perspectives, as those felt way more nuanced that the stuff Maru writes. Our dear Dame Verilyn's journey is a gem - the varied behaviors are well grounded in the narrative, a real joy to read.
Grammar does not seem to be an issue, bar a couple typos here and there noted in the comments and promptly fixed (and even those rather frequently are erroneous corrections). Bar that, I don't remember scowling at the text at any time during the reading
Lastly, the author's dedication to continuing this story as long as our interest persists, despite reviewbombs and all, is admirable - Huehuecoyotl123Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0A great story. It really takes care of every singke character and focus on showing us how, after a gruesome massacre on the plains, the life of every single inhabitant of the Sorcerous Kingdom really improved, form the "filthy peasant" to the highest ranking nobles. I just wish there where more interaction between the Guardians and the main cast on recent chapters, but as I said, that is a personal opinion.
Now, to conclude my review, I'm just gonna say this:
Nyoooooom - InkvisitionRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Wonderfull read! Can't wait to binge read all of the chapters. I can only recommend it to every Overlod fan, and even without the background knowledge it is flashed out enough to be enjoyable. Keep up the good work dear author, and don't let the half star trolls bite you too much.
- Jack ChambersRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is an amazing story, honestly calling it fanfiction is a disservice to the time, effort, and talent the author displays. It builds upon the source material so much, expanding the world and adding character yet still following the original rules and tone of the setting.
The only thing mildly off putting, at least for those not into it, would be the world building. If you've read the Wandering Inn then its kind of like that, with a large portion of the content dedicated to character and lore building/expanding. There is combat and fight scenes but it definetily isn't the highlight of the story. If you don't like that kind of thing, or don't want to invest time in learning the intimite details of how a fantasy kingdom operates, then maybe give this one a pass.
If you do enjoy this kind of story then you are in for a real treat. - JackplagueRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Truly, this is a series that's nice and long. It should take you months at least to get through, but it is worth the time. This comes from someone who has read 2.5 million words of this story.
Although it's fanfic, it is a high effort made with love that only a dedicated author is capable of.
From the depth of each character to the world-building, the only improvement I can suggest is to make this and audio book. - VeltasRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I’m a casual fan of Overlord. The anime series introduced me to the franchise, and I’ve also read several (but not all) of the translated novels on kindle. I love the basic idea of Nazarick and its people descending upon a fantasy world.
When I saw what appeared to be a 11k page fan fiction of Overlord promising kingdom building and an interesting perspective, I was curious. When I finally started reading, I quickly became 100% obsessed. This author is brilliant and puts forth incredible effort. I’m blitzing through this work at a pace that’s causing me to lose sleep for want of reading one more chapter, night after night after night.
I especially enjoy the author’s reflections after each completed volume. I didn’t think I would, but I do. This whole work has surprised me and completely captured my undivided attention. I started out of a curiosity of “what could possibly dive someone to write this much?” But I think I get it now. This is my favorite work on this site and the second I finish writing this little commentary I’ll be off to the next chapter. - VortexMagusRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The Valkyrie's Shadow is one of the premier stories on royal road, with scores far above the average in plotting, pacing, grammar, and characterization. Although technically a fan fiction, the story stands out as excellent on its own right and does not require any knowledge of the famous Overlord series to enjoy.
At its core, it follows a young frontier noble from a rather poor family as she rides the tumultuous waves of Nazarick taking over her kingdom and remaking society from its very roots.
It is sort of an inverse of the classic Overlord series, which revolves around incredibly overpowered characters bullying people a third of their level. In this story, you explore the immense wave of changes and complications the titular Overlord protagonists create with their every action, from the perspective of one of the mere mortals beneath them.

I will also add that unlike most stories, this story is a true kingdom builder - the main character actually builds up her territory. Not just going on random adventures while everything important happens in the background.
Instead, a lot of the administrative, organizational, and economic decisions happen on screen, and we regularly see the fallout of those decisions both inside her territory, and even in other kingdoms.
This is very unusual in a story, as most fantasy authors who include kingdom building elements sideline all the important stuff. This is so they can throw their characters off into another action-packed adventure without tackling all the difficult policy making and administration and economics underneath.
This halfassing of kingdom building leaves people who actually enjoy true kingdom building generally unsatisfied. One of the things that makes this story unique is that the author did not shy away from that level of detail, adding realism, immersion, and choice and consequence to the story. The main character makes decisions, and these decisions, for better or worse, actually matter. They change the territ
