Upon Wings of Change

Description
No one ever said what would happen when dragons and aliens meet. And no one told me that I would be in the middle of it.
* * *
Tasha was studying hard to get through her last year of university when she was kidnapped. She certainly did not expect to wake up with four feet and wings. Mad scientists are bad enough, but things get even more complicated when aliens appear and wipe out the human race.
Is there a way for her to hide her true identity in this new world while retaining her humanity?

Excerpt:
Taking a deep breath, I jumped over the lip of the tray and beat down hard with my wings, expecting to only slow my fall.
My powerful wingbeat plucked my feet from the sand as it threw me into the air. I squawked in surprise and spread my wings wide in alarm before gravity regained its hold on me. With several awkward back-winging motions of my wings, I landed lightly on the floor.
Well, at least I know my wings work.I glanced at the man in the corner as he was scribbling quick notes. I turned around to regard the tray again.Well, they say practice makes perfect. With another hop and a single light wingbeat, I managed to land in the sand tray with fanned wings slowing my momentum.
That was much more graceful. But a wing-assisted hop wasn’t true flight. And I still wasn’t on the windowsill.

- Thename20Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0One of my absolute favorites in all of the books I have read on this app I hope it is continued! Such a unique writing style and story. I don’t usually read slice of life but this book is great this is my first review so enjoy author. I’m so glad I stumbled upon this story I read both books in two days and now I’m sad please continue author. You have a special talent!
- CF_HoneyBadgerRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This was a surprisingly well written story, great characters and a fun plot. Stories like this tend to lean into the self-indulgent trope, but I think that overall the author did a really good job of balancing the story out.
My only criticism is that the
mind link kind of makes the relationship between the two advance a bit too quick? It kind of eliminates any tension or difficulty between the two characters when they can just talk.
But I still just loved the story, and don't regret the 5 star rating. - ChaoticpowerRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The author does a great job with the feelings of the bond and how it is developing slowly. And it feels right not rushed or wrong I started having good feelings about the Kamari race and they honor and the way they treated family and other Kamari. At first I was not happy about the dragons being so small and weak. But it really works well with the bond in mind and if the dragons grew to full size it might make them look to big of a threat. Overall I loved this book and could not stop reading it. The way it evoked emotions in me is rare for books I read. This is an amazing book I recommend it to all.
- ScotMcAlanRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0A really good story. It was relaxing afternoon read. I highly recommend it.
Not sure if there a book 2 but would love to see one.
Really really really really good.
I binged the whole book in one sitting.
I liked the flow of the story there was no parts that dragged out. There were some parts that seemed rushed in the beginning but it is supposed to be still a rough draft. Definitely still worth reading. - SoulFireMageRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Caveats: This is not usual Royal road fare. Nor is it progression or heavy on action.
It is a wonderful little story but you do need to read it for what it is. I've a bias against loss of agency and enslavement, and a new reader would be forgiven for thinking that this is a thing here.
However it isn't the case. Most of the tropes I dislike are absent and the characters relate and work with each other in a genuine and consistent way.
The writing is excellent, heartfelt and well worth your time.
I don't want to spoil it by saying too much abijt what kind of relationships the MC has but it's not one I've ever seen on Royal Road, nor in any fiction to date.
It's worth while. The premise is surprisingly original so, if you like little dragons and a new situation, with well drawn characters, give this a go. - Magnuss999Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0A beautiful book about friendship and trust between two very different species. The writing is perfect if this is only a rough draft then I don’t know how the finished product looks. The characters are fun and the story on its own is an interesting mix between slice of life and sci-fi. Do sad that the book is finished I need more from Tasha especially since there is so much more to explore.
- ManBearPigRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Amazing read! I enjoyed every bit of it, and as soon as I have the spare money (and my list of books to buy shrinks a bit) I will be buying the refined edition. As well as any others in the series.
It reminded me of one of my all time favourite series: Dragonriders of Pern by Anne McCaffrey . Like a story from the point of view of Fire Lizards, but if the Fire Lizards were as intelligent as the dragons.
I really hope this world gets a lot more attention from the author. Thanks for the read! - RivaliRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0llove this book so much that I found it on Amazon and have purchased my own copy for Kindle. It has fast become one of my favorite pieces of fiction.
When you read a great book, it sucks you into the story. I would definitely recommend to people who like the human to not fictions. - BudgiePRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5I liked this story. It is the fantasy of becoming an animal, feral and wild. And who among us can claim they have never had such fantasies? I know I can't. It is a story of low stakes, coziness, and being domesticated. It's probably not for everyone but I enjoyed it.
I'm not the biggest fan of the 'aliens' that we get introduced to. They feel like humanity but with all the interesting parts of the human condition expunged. Despite claims of technological superiority, they feel well below humanity in many ways. They return to bladed melee weapons. As if an infantry man would want to go into battle on what is tantamount to a flying JetSki. No armored vehicles, no fighter aircraft, no multi domain capability, no drones or unmanned systems. One must try really hard to suspend their disbelief and stay immersed when learning about the aliens in this story. Especially after reading about how easily they came to power over the planet.
The author could just as easily written about a protagonist who is transformed into a dog, finds a human family, who then trains to be an explosive sniffer at an airport, stopping a bombing plot. It would be getting at the same underlying 'story' stuff.
My least favorite part about the story is that in the beginning:
Eight billion humans die and this fact is only given the barest of considerations. Surely the survivor dragons would be dealing with immense survivors guilt and grief. I know I would be plotting my revenge arc everyday in such circumstances. Dragons plotting to reclaim a stolen Earth seems like a fantastic plot. But alas, the indomitable human spirit has been extinguished to allow this particular story to occur.
And that is never addressed again.
There is a solid plot structure here and everyone goes through their characters arcs. - JeSper537Royal Road★★★★ 4.0It was an enjoyable book and I got quite hooked after the story got going.
About a hundred people get turned into dragonets in a lab then aliens show up and use weapons specifically tuned to exterminate all humans but the dragonets slip notice. Another species of aliens arrive soon after and wipe out the first ones then settle Earth and our survivors end up living in one of their city parks.
There is a 7 year time skip and they basically live like animals, content, and there is no mention of any of them noticing or reflecting on this. No one having trouble adopting to a different body, trying to make long term plans, analyse whether they should contact the 2nd aliens or worrying about being the last remnants of humanity. Not even ruins remain, only them.
Yet they are still sapient, they are capable of those things as established by our protagonist's narration.
So it seems to me like a lost opportunity by the author rather than the dragonets being regressed purposefully. To think otherwise would make their circumstances much more depressing.
