After escaping captivity in the Deku citadel, Alize carries a new set of fears and shame. In the outside winter world, a war of succession rages and the Hrumi held responsible are imprisoned in Parousia, seat of the High Prince. Sargon Kelesh holds the prison key. Alize needs his help, but struggles to find common ground while dead Hrumi hang from the city gates.

But the lavish city of Parousia presents further complications. Davram has succumbed to his personal demons. Alize's own secrets, uncovered in the citadel, make her question whether she dares to help him. Kell is buckling under the weight of expectations of a selfish prince, the angry Hrumi prisoners, and family members seeking their kidnapped children. Alize is certain she can vindicate the Hrumi, but falters with Kell as the truth reveals itself to be more elusive than either of them had believed.
