Unfathomable Power for the Low, Low Price of Someone Else's Soul

Description
Book 1 Is COMPLETED! Currently updating book 2, set a year later.
Colm Avery is a warlock. You know, the "sell your soul for unlimited power" kind of warlock. Except for the part where he sells his soul. That never sat well with him.
Instead he sells the souls of others. Murderers. He trades the souls of those already destined for hell for gifts. It's hard work. For six years he's worked 18+ hour days, taking breaks when he could or when he simply passed out from exhaustion. Finally, a windfall lands in his lap that allows him some free time. And he's using it to go on a cruise.
Unfortunately, disaster after disaster strikes the cruise. Food poisoning, bad weather and PIRATES of all things. Colm will have to use his magic, his hellish gifts and a bit of luck to not only survive, but to unravel the plot behind all these seemingly unrelated events.
This cruise to Hawaii turned out to be more than he bargained for.
Updates whenever I can. Usually 2-3 times a month.
(The site caps me out on 3 genre tags and there's no tag for romance, so be warned: There is a tiny bit of romance in the books. It's never the focus of the story, but it is there. I only mention it because there was a request for the tag, but I'm filled up with Action, Horror and Fantasy.)
(Cover art is a placeholder for now.)

- zezblitRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Honestly not much to say here other than it's really really good. I'm sure others have made the Dresden comparison, and it's pretty bang on. It has the added benefit of avoid the slightly more chauvanistic bent of the early dresden books. Also it has PIRATES :D
Eagerly awaiting book 2 - BigBsmithRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I love this series. I love how he is so op and doesn't understand the fact that he's op. He's too busy being scared and gathering power to realize he was okay. Would love to hear the rest of the story. I was hoping the rest of the story would be on this platform and I wouldn't have to go somewhere else and buy something else to be able to finish the series. If someone knows where I can find it please let me know.
- Blind_WatcherRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I finished reading the first book last night and really enjoyed it.
Characters: In many respects the MC reminds me of Harry Dresden from The Dresden Files series with a smattering of Dexter Morgan from the Dexter TV series. He has enough power and knowledge to be dangerous, but still has a number of education-based blindspots that keep things interesting.
The supporting characters have their own things going on, but in a way that helps drive the plot forward. Definitely a plus.
Similarly, the villains feel competent, even if they are arrogant to the point of their own detriment. However, they have justifiable cause in being so, which makes it all work.
The extradimensional entities, both in retellings and 'in person' were quite interesting I'm very interested ins eeing more interactions between them and the MC.
Grammar: Easily the weakest element of the story if you are a stickler for grammar. I had no trouble listening to everything with a TTS program, but there were segments earlier on in the first few chapters that could use an editing pass. Overuse of the same words or source words, and missing bridging words, are the most comon offenders. However, it's all very fixable and becomes less frequent as the story progresses. (If you are reading this RaReason, I reccomend listening to or reading your story aloud. Our brains tend to take shortcuts when just reading silently, defaulting to "I've read this already" and skipping over errors. On the flip side, most of the time, you canl hear when something is off.)
Story: The story takes place in the real world, so there is a great deal that can just be taken for granted. Which is good, because it afforded more time and space to drip feed in the differences. If you have read The Iron Druid or the Dresden FIles, you know the established worldbuilding trope. For those not in the know, think Harry Potter.
For 'normal people' the world is exactly as you and I experience it everyday. On rare ocassions, normal people get a glim - BreadgodRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I laughed good amount during the book, the Magic and characters were very interesting I enjoyed it a lot. If you want a very gore filled magic adventure this is what you should read. Colms no f*cks given attitude is pretty satisfying form the usual baby MCs I see. If you want to make it funnier every time he says “fuck that” Gordon Ramsay is the one saying it.
- Cannon254Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Overall, good story, fun characters
I get strong Dresden Files vibes, just a different style of magic.
I like the idea and reasoning behind how he made those deals, even if it's kinda... morally grey
To avoid potential spoilers, I'm nt going to say much more
Main character is very task oriented, which also reminds me of the Dresden Files - DeathlyOreoRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story is the Dresden files. That's not a bad thing -- I'm strongly of the opinion that no stories are completely unique, save from the person who invented language a few thousand years ago. And the plot, powers, and characters are unique enough that it isn't an issue. But it has the exact same feel/vibe as the Dresdon files, which is a good thing, imo.
Some places could use some editing, but that's expected for a webnovel, and there's nothing that detracts heavily from the story (effects vs affects and stuff like that). What's currently posted is a finished "novel", but the author is planning on continuing it as a series, which I'm happy with -- 'book 1' had a satisfying conclusion, but still has a lot of areas left to explore in future books.
If you liked Dresden files, you'll like this. If you didn't like Dresden files, you won't like this. - GrinRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I've been reading this for a while and I just realised I hadn't left a review. I'm doing my part now.
TL;DR : go read. NOW. I'm not asking. I'll make the Duolingo bird look like a child's teddy bear in comparison to what I'll do if you don't.
What can I even say ?
Touching characters and scenes. Very lifelike. Perfect pacing. Eldritch fuckery (my favorite). A little feel of those film noir investigations. Inventive action scenes. Great sense of humour. A whole lot of wonderful worldbuilding and interactions between the magic and the characters' feelings and actions. Nothing feels fake.
The author has clearly given this a lot of thought.
And it shows.
I have read few things on this site that come close to how good this is. Truly.
Only thing I'd say is that there's an occasional grammar error. That's it. Everything else is fantastic. What are you even doing reading this trash ( albeit right ) review. Go read this.
This story has made me actually laugh out loud. Multiple times. That's rare. When was the last time you actually laughed while reading ?
This will grab you by the balls and not let go.
I can't recommend it enough. - KaywyeRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Okay, so here's the thing. I wasn't sure if I was going to enjoy this story. The title was... nebulous for me. I found it being reccomended to me by another author I enjoy. It took me a little while to start, but once I did...Wow. This story gives me Dresden vibes. It is truly well crafted, and I cannot reccomend it highly enough.Well done yo you, dear author and thank you for sharing your story with us.
- PibbsAndJRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Based on the title, I was expecting an OP anti-hero. Instead, the main character is more complicated and certainly isn't OP (pleasant surprise on both counts). The story is well-paced, the characters have individual personalities, there's a nice injection of comedy here-and-there, and what grammatical errors exist are few and far between (and don't detract from the story at all, hence the full 5-star rating). I'm currently well into the second book, and have found that it continues to be a great read (we've all had the sad experience of reading authors who had a great idea that expressed itself in the first book and was followed by lackluster sequels). I very much recommend this one!
- AvidReaderAllenRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I loved this story. Actual magic is used, not just talked about (some stories talk a lot about magic but never use any). MC is likeable, not alone (hate that) but with other good characters. Great plot. Grammar and spelling is good. Some affection between characters but nothing graphic. Contains violence, some motivational darkness but not excessive.
