- FoongussRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The description is misleading.
The story is about a girl who transmigrates to another world and gains werewolf-like powers. She goes on an adventure, makes friends, and gains knowledge and abilities.
There is no particular direction for the plot, the simplicity draws you in and leaves you wanting for more. The story can develop in many different kinds of ways and the possibilities excite you to keep reading.
The worldbuilding is... decent. There is hardly anything you haven't seen elsewhere. This is a fairly generic fantasy setting. However, what is there is polished and I think adding more would shift the focus of the story elsewhere.
This isn't about the elusive relationships of mundane and paranormal, or about the clash of different cultures, or other such things, although Umbral Feast does feature those themes in small capacity.
The focus appears to lie primarily on the characters and their interactions. Had the author wanted convoluted worldbuilding, they would have surely added it.
However, what deserves critique are the characters themselves: it is strange that first person is used when Helena has no internal monologue. Since you rarely see her thoughts, it reads similarly to a third person perspective.
I found this a bit jarring, because when I saw first person being used, I assumed this would be the kind of story where you following their thoughts and reactions throughout the journey. Helena reads similarly to a side character, which creates some distance between her and the reader that could have not been there.
And yet, since it is told from first person, we only know about other characters as much as Helena does. Its like the worst of both worlds, where neither can you immerse yourself in the main lead's expansive personality, nor can you really indulge in other characters. Besides, maybe, her fiance. The saving grace is that the interactions between Helena and her teammates are pretty good.
Overall, I would say the combination of all those features, on - HurtGoddessRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Amazing story!!
I’ve been a little sick of dungeon stories lately, but this work has such a nice spin on it that I’ve really been enjoying!! Great characters and character development, very cool main character powerset and the exploration and growth of abilities feels very natural!! Perpective swaps aren’t overdone and I actually find myself looking forward to them (as few as they are), and the pacing has been done very well as well! They really serve to flesh out the characters while not distracting from the main plot at hand, something which is very well done.
I just wanted to leave a review to encourage the author to keep it up because they have something great going! - PurpleSkyLilies13Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Love this story! It is imaginative, colorful, and adventurous, with enough detail and world building and character building (not too much), and also has plenty of action!
Great balance!
My kids introduced me to this storyline and I am obsessed! I read all 106 chapters that were available in a week!
How do I find your other work? Lilith? - Yuri KINGDOM trackerRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0Well I really like the story like, there is a good balance between mystery, action, fun, intense emotion and fluff. I would have preferred more wholesome or steamy (or just fade-to-black sex) moments between for the couples of MC and the sides. They have enough communication between them . The lore is being expanding slowly but surely, but often in big infos drop .
Really not good with this review stuff ,sorry. But read it, serious you may really like it as much as me too - Anita JuliaRoyal Road★★★ 3.0Umbral Feast starts with an intriguing premise: a woman who becomes a werewolf and joins a group of adventurers in a dungeon. However, the pacing of the story is painfully slow. After several chapters, we're still trapped in the same claustrophobic dungeon, with little to no progress in the plot or character development. The story feels bogged down by repetitive battles, with no significant advancement.
It feels like the narrative is stuck in an endless grind of fights, offering nothing new or compelling to push the story forward. Chapter after chapter drags on without delivering the tension or twists that would keep me engaged. I keep waiting for something more dynamic, something to breathe life into the plot, but so far, that hasn't happened.
Another issue is the world-building, or rather, the lack of clarity around it. The adventurers seem completely unaware of the existence of werewolves, which raises questions about the world this story takes place in. How is it that a creature as iconic as a werewolf is met with such ignorance? The fact that the protagonist transforms into one should spark some recognition or reaction from the group, yet their obliviousness leaves me questioning whether the author has fully thought through the rules of this universe.
Sadly, the slow pacing and repetitive battles overshadow the potential to explore the mythology and mysteries that could have made Umbral Feast an exciting read. As it stands, the story struggles to hold my attention, moving too slowly to sustain any real interest.
