    Prose & Style:
The writing is polished, evocative, and mature. There’s a confidence to the descriptions—whether you’re navigating the slums’ muddy alleys or the golden halls of the Basilica, the world is seen through details both beautiful and ugly. Dialogue rings true, and the narration is never overwrought. The prose balances moments of lyrical beauty (“the slums hugged the city’s walls like a forgotten afterthought”) with raw, hard emotion.
    Characters:
Umbra Lux’s heart is its cast. Lucius is a compelling protagonist: brave, curious, and shaped by loss and hope. His journey (from desperate child to budding healer) is deeply human, full of mistakes and small victories. Clarissa is unforgettable—a mother whose fierce love is her own quiet rebellion. Marcellus, the humble potter and secret healer, feels like a classic mentor with layers of pain and regret. Even side characters (Livia, Tullia, the slum kids) are given moments to shine. Every relationship is meaningful and real.
    Worldbuilding:
This is where Umbra Lux excels. The city is alive: from the slum’s code of “no sin” and its proud, honest poverty, to the cold grandeur of the Basilica, where faith and control bleed into one. Power is built on secrets, suffering, and who gets to define “miracle.” The class divide is everywhere—in the food, the language, the risk of simply being seen. Magic itself is both wondrous and dangerous, defined as much by hope and belief as by bloodline or ritual.
    Pacing:
The pacing is deliberate—a slow-burn build, especially in the opening arcs. There’s a rhythm of survival, secrecy, and threat: quiet moments of healing or childhood play give way to real peril. When things escalate (fleeing into the wilds, being hunted, or risking public healing), the tension is earned, not forced. Every consequence matters.
    The “Hook”:
What sets this apart is stakes. Healing isn’t a superpower—it’s dangerous, illegal, and isolating. The struggle is not just for power, but for dignity, family, and the

The writing is really smooth and easy to get lost in. The author does a great job painting a picture with words, especially with the contrast between the fancy inner city and the dirty slums. You can really "see" and feel the difference. The action scenes, like the chase through the graveyard, were well-described. I really can't emphasize enough how vivid the imagery in my mind was reading the novel.
That said, I was going to deduct half a star because chapters were a little inconsistent in the formatting, but when I really thought about it, that's just being too nitpicky, and it never actually affected my enjoyment reading. I was just looking for flaws like an overly critical critic, and spotted this one weakness. So, 4.8/5, which rounds up to 5 :)
    Story Score: 5/5
The story is awesome! I was hooked right from the start with the whole idea of the honest slums vs the corrupt city. The mystery just gets bigger and bigger in every chapter. First it's about a secret healer, then it's this whole conspiracy with bandits and mercenaries. The discovery of the tunnels and those carved arches was my favorite part. It makes you feel like there's this huge, ancient secret under the city just waiting to be uncovered. The story really subverts your expectations, because, at least for me, I always pictured slums as being morally grey and crimes of desperation were common. The reversal here was unique.
    Grammar Score: 5/5
The grammar was great. The manuscript is really polished and professional. I didn't get pulled out of the story by typos or clunky sentences, which is always a huge plus for me.
    Character Score: 5/5
The characters are what make this story special. You're immediately rooting for Lucius, this curious kid caught up in something huge. His mom, Clarissa, is so strong and you can feel her fear for him. And Marcellus is the perfect mentor—wise but with his own secrets. Even the side characters like Livia and Cassius felt interesting and complex. I'm re
