- Buddah222Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0thrilling tale of adventure and intrigue set in a VRMMO , with real-world interactions. Exceptionally well written, awesome world building and character development. The interaction between characters is phenomenal and really get you drawn into the story. The switching between the two environments of in game Immersion, and IRL is seamless and happens naturally as though you're actually there living it yourself very few grammatical errors if any, as it is well edited and presented professionally thoroughly the story . Immensely enjoying this story and hoping that the author is able to continue it to its final conclusion, even while dealing with IRL Issues. Have nothing but five stars and two thumbs up to give this story. Thank you so very much for bringing us this epic tale and expending your time , imagination and effort in creating it.
- Luca DRRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is a mature novel, that takes a methodical approach to develop an interesting world and the actors that play on its stage. The slow approach favors the story a lot, allowing readers to get invested in its elements while also retaining a good deal of interest. There are fight, action scenes sprinkled in, with increasing frequency after the earlier establishing chapters are over with. The dialogue and worldbuilding are well thought-out.
however. There are negative points. I feel like the early chapters take a hit when it comes to characterization of the main cast. The protagonist and his companion especially are not as well developed as one would hope, taking directions that are (as the author himself adits) different than what was intended for them. Sometimes style choices come at the expense of proper characterization and make the main cast unlikable.
this being said, i feel like the criticism the novel received in some comments is not deserved. While it's true that the main character is somewhat naive, and could have been written better (for instance, switch from naive to jaded uncaring hardened badass man like in a noir movie), it's ultimately up to the author to decide what to do. Many issues only come from how one frames the story, and in my head canon the mc is actually much more of a badass than most commenters think.
all his choices are consequences of his dire conditions, and are believable. The author asks us to suspend our disbelief but i dont think it's necessary. I liked the scenes at the corporation and i think many people would have reacted the same.
the worldbuilding is coming along nicely too. I have some worries about the game system, but it feels well built as far as the early chapters go.
this is definitely shaping up to be an interesting novel to read, and i will come back to read more after I'm done with all my work. It's worth it. For the thrill of discovery, for the exploration, for the cool dynamic between real life and game. It's hinted - JayzarnRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0Author seems to have some good ideas for world building (primarily speaking about in game). We spend very little time outside of the game once the groundwork is all laid which I think suits this genre best. Another review said the MC starts as a doormat which I agree with but it makes sense for now. His focus is work and his sister. That said I think an agreeable but not gullible MC could work well for this story. Just hope he doesn't cave to everyone's demands later on.
I'm not not a good judge for combat scenes but I think these are handled very well. There's some tactics, there's enough explanation on game mechanics that you don't feel lost, and theres enough details to paint a picture. I think the two big items that will make my decision to continue this as it gets closer to chapter 60-70 is 1) character/party development. We've seen some already (currently chapter 30) so I'm hopeful. And 2) will the backstory of Monster Hunter be interesting. I think the current setup is promising due to in game deaths not being debilitating and it's nice to see an MC that isn't literally overpowered or plot armored through every conflict. - The OxRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0This this is a review of only the first 6 chapters but it seems very promising so far
Style is very solid, no jumping around in different tenses or holes in the chronology.
Story seems to be hitting pretty standard gamelit tropes, Jay has motivation to game to pay for his sick sister, he's got this unrequited love interest to game with, plus a possible shady game Corp that maybe jerking him around, there's lots to work with plot wise.
Grammar seems a little like the author is rushing to post? I noticed places were spaces between words were missing which should get caught by spellcheck.
Character It is still quite early but I have to say that so far Jay is kind of a doormat, as of the first six chapters everyone in the book has rolled right over him. It would be good for the story for him to get some backbone. His boss tells him to go to a "meeting" with no info on his day off and he caves instantly. That is hard to understand. He similarly lets himself get railroaded completely by the game legal counsel. I'm not sure really if this is a personality flaw on Jay's part or a plot device? Obviously the author needs to get Jay in the game with his special class so we can have a story but at the moment the author did so by having Jay act like a wet lettuce wuss, and kind of stupid? He didn't even read the contract!
Update: after reading further a few more chapters, Jay has begun to develop the first cartilaginous precursors to a true backbone. Perhaps by ch 20 he will join us in vertebrate- hood.
