Although the general theme is familiar (commoner finds ancient scroll/relic/master and cultivates faster/better than those who previously transgressed against him/her), the story is unfolding nicely.
The protagonist is not exactly a pleasant individual, but he has reasons, and he has the virtues of courage and common sense. Two other important characters have been introduced so far, and they feel three-dimensional too.
There are quite a few syntactic solecisms with which a competent editor could help, but my inner grammarian was not wholly outraged.
All in all, there is enough to show that this author has the story-telling knack. (Grinds teeth enviously. Must ... resist ... urge ... to give talented writers half a star out of sheer jealousy.)
