- AceGDRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Phil Tucker has yet to disappoint me with any of his titles and this one is no different. The characters are interesting and engaging, the world one I immediately want to explore, and, as always, Phil's dialogue and descriptions are tight. The story just goes down easy and my only wish is that there were more chapters available (even on Patreon.) Very excited to see where this story goes.
- DraddockRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I have enjoyed Phil Tucker's actual written books like Chronicles of the Black Gate, and Euphoria Online. Both excellent works if you'd enjoy an epic fantasy and trapped in an MMORPG style series.
This really hits the same as those. Has me constantly craving what's happening next. Just have to know what's in the next chapter.
Although, why does half of it remind me of self help books, like Atomic Habits? - EdochRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The story is an intriguing and masterful use of the dungeon concept, seamlessly blending adventure and strategy. The main character captivates with his complex personality and potential for growth, making readers eager to follow his journey. Additionally, the side characters each bring their own unique flair and depth, enriching the narrative and creating a vibrant, dynamic world. This book promises an engaging and multifaceted reading experience.
- FastLanceRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I’ve read other series by the author, Phil and he has a fantastic talent for pacing stories. Introducing interesting characters with complex motivations. Which is similar to life, nothing is black and white, especially people and their reasoning for their actions.
Harald is our main MC and when I first started reading the story I found him extremely unlikable and pathetic. In fact had I not known the author I may have put the story down at the beginning of chapter 1. As I got to the end of chapter 1, without realising it I was slowly starting to get hooked. By the time I got to the end of chapter 2 I realised that I was hooked.
Without giving away too much of the story or ruining it, this is a great slow burner where the author continuously tricks us into a sense of comfort and normalcy before things go from 0 to a 100 real quick. One of my favourite things about this novel is the unpredictable nature of the story. That’s what really keeps me hooked.
Both the progress of our MC and world building is slow and steady. The stakes keep on slowly increasing only for them to sometimes increase exponentially.
The only downside of this story is, it may make reading other progression series on RR seem boring. In fact by the end of chapter 8 I ended subscribing to Patreon, where Phil has released 29 chapters so far and the story there is amazing at the moment. - ShafRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Spoiler free review: I've tried a number of the dungeon diving novels that have been popular for the past few years and haven't been the biggest fan of them. Thrones of the Fallen has to be the best one I've read so far by a mile and is a breath of fresh air in what felt like recycled ideas in the genre. It does so by not confining itself to the dungeon and allowing enough time outside it for the characters to develop, having an extremely interesting and unique manner of dungeon and actual skill that needs to be developed rather than acquired straight away through a system window. This story has immense potential and regardless of whether you're a fan of Phil Tucker's previous works or not, I implore you to read this and give it a shot because it feels like it might become his best work so far.
- Tobi SiwaleRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This has got to be one of the coolest stories I've read and it was just on its origin arc, I love how the MC looked at his failures and decided to change for the better and achieve his goal.
This honestly reminds me of solo leveling's beginning fantasy mode but completely different.
I'm really curious to see where this will go, will he become the hero he dreams of or will he succumbed to the demon seed. - WinzzyRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0*Came back to update*
Before I get into review the story, I have to take a minute to say how much I appreciate Phil Tucker and how he engages with Royal Road (RR). I could be wrong but I believe Phil is successful enough to not "need" RR. In a day where RR is almost used as a marketing platform and stories are stubbed before I can even read them, his handling is a breath of fresh air.
Now, on to the review.
I love the story so far. Yes, there are elements that are tropes, but they are down well so far. The world feels alive and viable, the magic is interesting, the characters are flawed (maybe overly so?), and the pacing is perfect.
The relationships between the characters are complicated and feel real and lived in. The fight scenes are exciting and well written and even the training montages are enjoyable. There have been plenty of surprises so far and you will have unexpected little twists and turns to reward your reading.
I noticed no grammar errors or writing that didn't fit and the reading was a seamless experience for me never forcing me out of the narrative. I have to say Phil is one of the better writers when it comes to style and Grammer on Royal Road.
In short, I love this story and and so sad that I am caught up now. It has become the first thing I do each day and I will be utterly crushed when Phil moves to a normal release schedule instead of daily.
I think if you give it a shot you too will enjoy it. - bronkeyRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0After reading the most recent chapter i could no longer avoid writing a review of this story.
What Phil has done here is truly spectacular. There is a tendency in the fantasy and progression fantasy genres to focus on plot and world building above everything, which i don't mind, however it is often at the expense of the characters.
Having read some of Phils other works i know that characters are often just as important to him and are rarely neglected but in this story in particular he has made characters that are flawed, distinct, interesting and dynamic. I can't remember the last time i was this impressed by character work in a book.
They all feel like people i have met before. The act according to their natures and they react to each other accordingly as well. They call each other out and have the hard conversations that make up a huge prt of our lives but are so often missing from fiction that i didn't realise how much I wanted something as character focused as this till i started reading it. If you read this story for only one reason, let it be for this.
That doesn't mean the other aspects are lacking. This is technically a system and dungeon novel (albeit in a different form) but the trappings are unique. So far we have not delved much into the dungeon but we have already found ourselves embroiled in some political shenanigans and some of the wider plot motivations have been revealed.
All in all i think this is going to stand out in the genre as one of the best written stories around. Cannot speak highly enough of it.
You'll like this if you like Character driven, gritty, slow burn stories.
If you're looking for something fast paced or power fantasy this may not be for you, but i will at least say read the first 10 chapters or so to see if you like it. Its worth giving it a chance. - Orlean CloudRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I've read the first 13 Chapter and for now the story is shaping to be a great progression fantasy, it's not going too fast but at the right pace, we're getting to know Harald and the change shown in just 13 chapters is already great. For now the worldbuilding is pretty good, we're getting to know how things works, with no info dump.
As an extra gaving read the other author works like Bastion, I'm pretty confident that this story is going to be at least pretty interesting. - Rayman123Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0I am already further along on Patreon and I can highly recommend it, friends. Already the Main Character feels distinct from the endless amounts of cookie cutter characters you see in a lot of fictions on here and the characters and especially the relationships between them already shine. Add to that really solid prose and you got yourself a winner.
The Author has already proven himself in the genre and I can't wait to read what he's cooked up this time!
