Spoiler alert - I’d probably suggest reading up to at least book 4/5 maybe 6 of He Who Fights With Monsters to avoid any spoilers of themes I’ve explored.

I’ve followed the story for years and subscribe to Shirtaloon’s Patreon and can honestly say it is the best story I’ve ever read. This is my attempt at staving off the addiction of waiting for each chapter to be released online by writing my own parallel story in his universe. I have no writing training just a fair bit of imagination and enthusiasm. So far I have an entire book written (pending editing) and started on the second. Please bare with it in the beginning as I was getting used to putting my imagination down on a page. I hope anyone enjoys this.

Originally conceived as an experiment generating essences and powers for me and my brother. Extended to our significant others we had four characters to play with so I made a scenario battle for fun. This turned into a few chapters and onto the start of a story.

The timeline is not entirely finalised, certainly after book 4, I’m waiting for Shirtaloon to expose more of the goings on from Greenstone post book 11/12 to say whether or not my books happen before or after the monster surge.

The story follows two brothers and their wives who are snatched suddenly from Earth with no knowledge of magic and whisked away to Pallimustus. Their arrival is cushioned somewhat by powerful beings who are elusive as to the reason why.

From the very beginning, it is quite clear that this fan-work is made by someone with a lot of both respect and love for the original series, enough to even want to experience it not only for themselves, but alongside their loved ones.
Those Who Walk With Heroes will let us follow the journey of not one, but four outworlders as two brothers and their spouses find themselves facing a world entirely different from our own. The story hits the ground running in a familiar territory among some likewise familiar locations and characters, connecting nicely with some of the details from the original story that we know and love. From there, it will be up to them to find their place in this magical world and work towards something big that has yet to be revealed.
One of this story's strengths, making me enjoy it a lot, is the very plausible portrayed development of the Greenstone area in wake of the first three books. As I read, I often find myself thinking "Huh, it could totally have gone like that." Another is the diverse sets of powers between our cast, providing a lot of variety for the author to work with.
In regards to points of improvement, I would hope that the author takes some time to edit and clear up some of the earliest chapters. As they themselves write, those are the roughest, and while I appreciate the pace it sometimes became a bit confusing. My humble suggestion there would be to provide a bit more of an introduction to each of the cast, supported by more flashbacks to their days training in the Greenstone Academy.
Overall, I believe that fans of the original world and story should give this one a try, to get some more of the magical world we know and love, with brand new adventures to boot.
