Them, We Hunt

Description

Two brothers are forced by circumstances into living in the wilds for years. A cultivator from a sect discovers them while out on a mission, and offers them a place at the sect. Wary of trusting anyone, they nonetheless agree that some risks are worth taking. One thing they know above all others, is that they will protect each other. No matter what.

This book will be cultivation with some LitRPG elements. There is no overarching system (as in Defiance of the Fall), but there are ways to track progress and quantify things (more akin to The Hero of the Valley, but not a carbon copy of that). The two brothers are the main protagonists, and will remain the main focus of the story all the way through. The older brother will be the main POV, and I don’t intend to do many alternate POV’s even for the younger brother. This is, however, my first real attempt at writing, so this might change.

As this is my first book, critique is VERY welcome (and needed), but please try to keep it polite. I do have feelings.

The traumatizing content tag is because the first chapter heavily describes an abusive father. He will only appear on screen for the first chapter, and while this will be referenced as it becomes relevant in the story, it will not be the focus, nor do I have any plans to make such things common in the story. This is your warning however that a good chunk of the first chapter will be hard to read for those who struggle with such triggers.

I hope you enjoy the journey of these two brothers.

This is a great story! I feel like it moves too fast sometimes, and I thought that it  has some major issues with the first antagnonist, who went way overboard with a minor conflict with the MC. However the most recent chapter cleared up a lot of issues that I noticed in the plot. I am surprised that it took me so long to find this story and hopefully it shows up on Rising Stars soon!

Amazing story so far, with well though out character development and fights.  I'm loving the brothers relationships as they develop together through their journey, and once I started reading I could not put it down. I'm enjoying the system that does remind me alot of Hero of the Valley, another book that I thoroughly enjoy, and the reason I even started reading it. I highly recommend this series, and I hope the author keeps going.

Need to rush this review, so in no particular order
Pacing issues: Agree with other reviewers that it seems to be a bit wibbly woddly and we get jerked back and forth as to the relative pace of time going by.  Large stretches of time get summarized, which isn't bad, but it can be a bit of a slog. They grow in strength faster than Son Goku.
Coping with trauma is core theme of the story, and there's a big reveal that just happened that closely connected to it. Yes, the traumatic elements themselves are limited to chapter 1, but there's a strong dramatic/psychological element that comes up every few chapters.
Antagonists don't really make sense.  Arrogant young master, okay, fine, but because of the set up, he's basically threatening a civil war between sects if he actually succeeded. On top of that, cultivaiton stories always have an issue with power scaling, i.e., why isn't the protagonist squashed by a demigod in the first chapter.  The stories cope with it some way by having more powerful folks avoid the protagonist in a straight fight, but here, there appear to be at least two fights where very strong enemies come to fight our protagonists.  That really stretches the bounds of believability.
Also, there's a Scooby Doo big reveal about what's happening in the background.
LitRPG elements are clever in-universe, but don't add to much to the story given that the cultivation happens apart from the system, which system is primarily an informatic.
