The Verant Chronicles Series - Book One: Fractured Empire
Community Rating
Description
The once powerful Verant Empire had been brought to its knees after seven years of civil war. The war maybe over, a new emperor maybe at the helm, but the empire remains broken. Deadly plagues, encroaching monsters, divided political loyalties only scratch the surface of the problems the empire now faces. Highwaymen make the roads unsafe, powerful wizards go unchecked and goblin hordes threaten local towns and villages.
Elwin doesn’t want to spend his days as a farmer and dreams of adventure. He, his brother Rith, best friend Emerson and adopted cousin Anna, decide to go out into this world as adventurers hoping to seek fame and fortune just like in the books they read. The empire is at a crossroads as Elwin and his friends experience the aftermath of the war, they must come to terms with what it means to live in the Verant Empire as one of it's citizens.
It all begins with an intriguing map sewn into cloth, written in a strange language and depicting a place that doesn’t seem to exist. Elwin and his friends decide to go to the capital city to join the adventurer’s guild and find someone who can translate the map and hopeful recognize the locations depicted. Along the way they encounter lizard creatures, goblins, former soldiers, a bard, druid and a powerful wizard who has his own eye on the map. They meet new friends and create deadly enemies.
From great plains to a bustling metropolis, to a town devastated by an earthquake, their world of Gaia has a gritty realism to it and the empire is only a small part of a much large realm. It is a Romanesque world teetering on a renaissance in which Gods, gunpowder, armored knights, griffin riders and magic coexist uneasily. Elwin and his companions drink, smoke, swear, make mistakes and face serious moral dilemmas at every turn.
Novel is now complete, the second novel in the series has begun publication with an advanced chapter as a reward to my followers. The remainder of Book 2 will be published weekly starting at the end of September.

- ShyFoxRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I am really enjoying this book, it's refreshing and I love all the details because I like to place myself in the story. It has great flow and a wonderful storyline.
I love the explaination of the characters and bring in the backstories is a favorite of mine. I find a lot of authors these days don't really get into the backstories like they use to. I want to know these characters and their personalities. It's what makes books more interesting to me.
I have to be honest, if this ever comes out in paperback, I would love to have this in my collection. I feel it's a mix between lord of the rings and game of thrones but what's even better, is that it's based more so on the commoners point of view, instead of the emperors view.
With large books like this, sometimes they can be really intimidating to me but if I can get interest within the first chapter, I'll read faster and I'll get more interested so see what's coming next.
This book is a lot of reading, like a good thick King novel but I quite enjoy it, the author keeps me engaged. If only I could have been there in those times. I was hooked right from the prologue. I look forward to more chapters and hopefully more books in the future from this Author. - jrhjonesRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0A group of friends set off to be adventurers. The goal Verant city. Heart of an empire recuperating after civil war. What exploits and future endeavours await them they can only wonder. In lands full of dangerous creatures they will need to get there first.
This tale has all the earmarks of classical fantasy. A genre I adore. So it was a pretty good sell.
The cast of characters are likeable. The locations they travel through easily visible through the descriptions. Lots of mystery and intrigue as you share the worldly awe our young heroes experience.
Very enjoyable start to the series. Will be eagerly awaiting future instalments.
