The Type Specialist

Description

Alex wakes up in the world of Pokémon. Obviously, the next step is to become a Pokémon Trainer, but not just any Pokémon Trainer. Why should I be mediocre with every type when I can be an expert in one?

The Type Specialist was my first attempt to write a fiction. It is about traveling the world and building a strong team. The focus is on Alex taking on the Gym Challenge and dealing with problems that pop up here and there. Since this was my first fiction, the protagonist is a little rough at the start but improves alongside the writing quality as the fiction develops.

Complete.

As one of the stronger Pokemon self-insert stories here on RR, Type Specialist is a solid read and well grounded in it’s source material.  The author captures and conveys the combat scenes well, and their descriptive language always sets the scenery vividly.  They are also courteous enough to include sources for every Pokemon in the chapter, a somewhat invaluable reference for those of us who haven’t memorized every entry in the national dex.
Admittedly the start may be a little rough, but with each chapter you can notice the improvement and confidence as the author gets into the swing of things, thus this reviews’ title.
If you enjoy the games or anime, this story is a solid pickup and page-turner.  And I cannot wait to read the next tale (ghosts need more love)!

This is an excellent story, I discovered it from reading 'The Ghost Specialist', which is what Incarnated Whisp is currently writing, and I thought I'd give it a go in between chapters of that.
And I'm sure glad I did.
As a background, I played Pokemon up until the 4th Generation, with a passing interest in the anime. I wasn't really into Pokemon after that, but 'The Type Specialist' really got me invested in the story in a way the Nintendo of today can't.
The worldbuilding works very well, taking well-known aspects from the anime and games, and puts a 'realistic' spin on it for what life could be like in the Pokemon world (since real-life things like employment, economy and foreign relations aren't exactly explored in the media). The grammar is good and understandable, and the story of an isekai'd human from our world with pokemon knowledge (And the butterfly effect it causes) is a simple concept that works well. The pokemon of Alex's team all have unique personalities which mesh well with each other, and though not much background is given for Alex themselves (their past being framed in a negative light), it works in this case, as the theme of the story very much involves looking positively to the future. (Despite the occational known crisis...)
Definitely the biggest highlight for me is the buildup to a certain anime event in the story, right up until the story gets to that point. I am not going to even hint at what it is, but I suspect those that read the story will know exactly what I refer to!

I haven't finished it as I'm only on chapter 143. Not much i can say that's wrong with it other than the pacing at points its seems to fly by others seem to be fast paced. That doesn't detract from the story only adds to it as it reminds me of the anime and games in that way.

One of the best pokémon fanfiction I ever read.
I really like how you concentrated on the Fairy typing, and how organic the discoveries about it feels like. Additionally, using Alolan Ninetails as the starter is perfect since fluffiness everywhere, while having Azumarill show that Fairy types aren't pushovers either.
The only thing I'm a bit sad about is the lack of the best pokémon Gardevoir, but I understand your reasoning on it.
    Thanks for writing !

In my opinion this is some of the best stuff in RR. Legitimately. To start Alex is in the new world and to stay mostly spoiler free, gets ‘set up’. After about 10 chapters the story gets going. There have been so many moments where I cried and the story made me so emotional. To be fair, in the last region it gets a tad stale, but not too much. The author was good to call it where they did. The grammar is pretty good, a couple mistakes here and there, but not anything too distracting. The story and plot is SO GOOD though.

I think this story is easy to compare to Borne of Caution, yet at the same time, I advice people to check this one out with an open mind.
I think the story so far is great and, although a little bit fast-paced to what I am used to, it's really entertaining. The author did a great job in setting up the universe and the characters in its own very distinctive way, so it doesn't feel like you're just reading an alternate point of view from a character in another pokemon fanfiction. It's its own thing and, to be honest, I can't wait to read more.

Personally I really like the story I may not know much but it felt a bit more realistic compared to other fics, I love the interaction with the pokemon and friends along the way. (For me) 5 stars because it's fun, I enjoyed every single episode and I just can't wait to see what happens. Love this <3

This has been the best fiction to read on this site. This story portrays a real character that goes through real struggles. The author does an amazing job of fleshing out all characters and making us fall in love with them. Even if their personalities don’t align with yours you will still be able to respect and appreciate the characters. The authors love for this story is very clear and the work put into it is very evident. Thank you author for creating this masterpiece and I can’t wait to read your next work!🩷💜🤍

I'm very impressed so far with this work. Thus far it has incorporated some familiar-ish elements of the games, but without making things feel like a retelling. The pace of things also is quite good, and the character development has been fantastic. The pokemon have actual personalities, which is disappointingly rare in similar fanfictions.

This is a great story that’s fun, emotional, and epic. There are definitely some rough patches, especially earlier on. But, overall, the story is structured pretty well, and more importantly, the overall charm of this story and watching the mc (Alex) grow up, make connections, and turn from a scared kid into the one taking care of the scared kids makes this fanfic easily make up for any kind of roughness. This is a fan fiction, not some kind of high art where every sentence is thought about in depth. Overall, this fiction creates an emotional and compelling story that can engage a willing reader through its impressive length. 4.5/5.
