- Josh WellsRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Overall: As said in the title, I think this is a great start! There are definitely a few kinks that need to be worked out but overall this is a fun read :). I would recommend this novel.
Style: Style here gets a 4.5/5. Everything flows quite well for the larger part of this novel. The reason why this is not a 5/5 is simply the phrasing of some of the sentences. At times sentences are started, or carried on for too long, in a way that can be disruptive to the immersive experience.
Story: I think the first two chapters started a little slower than what I am used to but I can see the story really starting to ramp up with the addition of the litrpg elements and I like the direction the author is taking the story in. Looks fun!
Grammar: Grammar gets a 5/5. The story might need a few comma's here or there to help aid the texts readbility but I'm picky and its not too much of an issue.
Character: The main character seems exciting, reminissant of a classical 'hero' type. I think the character interactions are done well, although sometimes the dialogue between characters sounds a bit forced. (Nothing a solid round of editing wouldn't be able to fix).
Great Start!! - AlixRocheRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Overall: the first 4 chapters build a great baseline for the world and the Mana System. Love the pop-culture references!
Style: 3rd person PoV, but it isn't written in a way to alienate or put distance between the characters and the reader. It isn't overcomplicated, and the amount of description is in a sweet spot - not too much and not too little.
Characters: each of the introduced characters has a distinct voice. While we are focusing more on Dave, we learn about the world of the story through him. Before the introduction of the system, we are introduced to both Dave and Max and are quickly shown through their interactions about the kind of people the two are.
Story: the story so far has been engaging. The world-building is being done semi-gradually. I have seen this trope of the system sending a being to answer the character’s questions before they get exposed to the system fully. I think it was done well in this instance. And the reasons for the being not revealing all of the information were believable.
Grammar: I was so interested in the story that I didn’t notice anything that was wrong. There are some sentences that drag on for a little bit longer than they should and could be split into two, but it wasn’t constant and it was overall a smooth and pleasant read. - CloudfallRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The Cover: It's simple but delivered the intended message. Not the best cover for the book, but it's quite effective.
The Synopsis: The synopsis is well written. First time reader will see what the book's all about in details without divulging too much. This is really good.
First Chapter: Incredibly entertaining. Any potential reader will want to know what happens next. Great job.
Storyline: Right from the synopsis, the readers know that the book is about Dave and Max who want to enjoy themselves and have adventure in a world that was slowly experiencing resurgence in the manalevel after being cut off for a long time. You'll know this is going to be entertaining.
Grammar: Perfect.
Character: So far, they are well designed for their roles.
Overall: Great novel. - A V DalcourtRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Overall, it was a quick read, quicker because I hadn't noticed how many chapters I had gone through until I ran out of chapters to read. That's a great sign in my books!
Style: Told through a 3rd persona perspective, it takes a bit before we're firmly in Lit RPG territory, with Levels, skills, and sense of growing progression. There's a nice balance between description, character, actions, and the flow into the RPG elements of the story. It's nice not to have a manual dropped on me in the first two chapters.
Story: Celebrating their last year of freedom, Dave and Max are at the tail end of their tour of South Asia before returning home. While on a bus ride to their next destination, the world blacks out and the remaining citizens of the Earth are informed via a series of visions that the mana planes are merging and that life as they know it is about to get really interesting. By chapter 4, Dave's unlocked his first skill and is about to unleash a can of whoop-a** on a bunch of angry squirrels.
Characters: I have a clear distinction on who Max and Dave are, and have been able to keep them separated in my mind. But some of the other characters have yet to come into their own before I can form an opinion of them, as a result care. I'm glad that the writer doesn't spend too much time on background drops in the initial chapters, and what history we do get is added in when it's relevant. It's a really smooth way of getting to know the characters.
Highly recommended. - thegoodman99Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Overall:
Overall the story has been very engaging. Sam and Max are backpacking cambodia when the world as they know it gets invaded by mana. Monsters, magic, and monster squirrels are now a part of the world. This is the first time I have read an appocolypes system type book. So far it has been a real treat. I look forward to seeing how the story progresses and how the characters grow in strength.
8/8 Squirrels. Would recommend.
Style:
The book is written from the third person narrative allowing us to get a glimpse into others thoughts. As of right now we mostly see Dave's thoughts. No problems with the style.
As far as the system formatting, I am a fan of the author not using boxes to display skills and stuff. There are some improvements that could be made on the format but overall it works.
Grammer:
No major grammar issues. For the most part the story is easy to read and understand.
Story:
I am a simple man. I see monster squirrels and I get excited about the story. Didn't know this was the case until just recently. The author does a great job conveying attainable power levels giving the readers and the characters a landmark to work towards.
Character:
I look forward to learning more about Dave and Max and the solid friendship they have. Sam seems cool even though she doesn't have much screen time. Bixpy also gets a thumbs up. Wouldn't mind getting to know them more as well.
Also, I am pretty sure Jesus made an appearance. if that is the case, it would feel bad (religious or not) giving the character score anything less than a 5.
So far the story has been fun to read, and I look forward to reading more. Thanks for writing. - Patwil0818Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0I was impressed with the start of this story and added it to my Read Later to keep an eye on it. It was engaging from the start and made me care about the characters and what happened to them. This review goes through chapter 15.
Style: As i said, the writing is engaging. The author does a nice job of giving us glimpses into the characters and the world without going overboard. A bit too much info-dumping at times to merit a 5 star, but it wasn't as off-putting as other stories I have read.
Story: Fantastic. Always interesting to see what new monsters authors come up with, and squirrels are a nice contrast of cute and scary. Also the fact that they don't always have to fight to succeed is nice. The world building is coming along excellently and pulls the reader in.
Character: Each one has a distinct voice and seems to have their own reasons for the actions they take. They don't just nod and support the decisions the MC make. It is interesting to see how the lead switches back and forth between Max and David.
Grammar: This is the toughest one. I enjoyed the story so probably overlooked a bit, but the grammar is rough. Wrong words (felt versus felled), incomplete sentences and ones that just drop off. Also at times each chapter seems like only 1-3 sentences long which gets a bit repetitive. The story is good enough to hide these flaws, but they do tend to become more noticeable as time goes on.
Overall: Despit the low grammar score and slightly lowered style, I still have to give this a 5 overall. The author manages to achieve the most difficult task of making the readers care about his characters from the start, which encourages us to continue reading. Despite occassional issues with info-dumping the author manages to seed bits and pieces of the world building and character development to really grow his story. Give this story a try, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. - Nicole UrbanRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5This story is intriguing from the start. There is great immersion right from the beginning as we get to know the main character, getting to know him through small details. The author also does a really good job of presenting the fantastical through the lense of our modern world, which makes it easier to explain the exposition.
The only reason this didn't get 5 stars were a few grammatical errors that broke the immersion a little, but with some editing and cleaning up this would easily be a fun read with an interesting story!
