This is a pretty good contemporary fantasy story with interesting worldbuilding, a diverse and interesting cast, and enough action and intrigue for plenty of excitement.
I do have a few things I disliked or think could have been done better (which I won't go into here because they'd be spoilers), but they're more a matter of personal preference. So, instead, let me highlight a few things about the story and what I liked:
The MC is a pretty reasonable adult. If you're tired of teenage girls in urban/contemporary fantasy, you might like this story instead. She's supposed to be an intelligent physicist, and she acts like it (most of the time, but everyone is allowed to make a dumb mistake once in a while). Becoming a 'fantasy princess' doesn't immediately invalidate that. The other characters are true to their characterizations as well, the ones with enough screentime all show some hidden depth and character development.
There are some thematic and moral issues in the story that I think are handled reasonably well. The MC learns and struggles with them, arguably more so than just with how to blow up her enemies, which makes for a good story, in my opinion. This story does deserve the 'Traumatizing Content' label, though, so be aware that this is not a children's story.
The magic system is nice. I think it could have been focused on a little more, but I guess there's plenty of room for that in the sequel. What we do learn is interesting. There are several fantasy races, some of them different from what you usually see, and bits of mythology from various times and places. Overall, this definitely leans more to the soft magic side of the scale, don't let the character sheet in the author's note in the first few chapters fool you.
To be honest, I found it a bit hard to rate this story, but I really enjoyed reading it, so I decided it was worth the extra half-star. I'm looking forward to the sequel!
Oh, and the author apparently plans to revise the story and put it on KU, s
