- GarrdorRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0This story is about a girl wandering about alone after everyone else mysteriously disappears, and then gets weirder and spookier.
Here are some of the things I like and the fewer things I dislike about this story (as of chapter 17)
Pros in my personal opinion:
Always a fan of lone protagonists figuring stuff out on their own. It is always fun to delve into the mystery while it's happening, and usually makes for more unique ways for the MC to be OP. Unlike a bunch of litrpgs, this story doesn't jump straight in to statuses and tables, and this has the effect of not making it as predictable (we can all guess roughly what's going on in any given system apocalypse story, not much to wonder about just gotta wait for it to be spelled out).
Because it takes sort of a non linear approach to getting to the promised litrpg elements, the story is a lot more eerie. You literally have no idea what is happening or why, and neither does the character. I like it, it's more of a psychological start than just killing zombies or whatever is, and also more accurately depicts the absolute terror of being the last person on Earth.
The world building is cool, there seems to be rich story elements that will eventually get explained. As the character learns more about what's going on, so will we. Already we've got hints of multiple different mythologies/ magic systems being at least partially real.
Character seems to make reasonably smart choices, and the side characters are unique and pretty neat.
The antagonist(s) are cool, and scary, and a constant concern over her shoulder, and seemingly so divorced from our human reality as to be unknowable.
Somehow makes someone wondering around the abandoned east coast looking for a cell phone charger interesting (that's not even really a plot point I'm just kidding). I thought initially that leaving her alone would be a risky move, but it worked out and stayed compelling.
Very well written I think I saw one sort of wrong word in all the chapters, ve - luda305Royal Road★★★★ 4.0This story is almost impossible to pin down in a few genres. It's survival, post-apocalyptic, horror, psychological, magic of the witch-and-fey-ritual kind, LitRPG, isekai??, and who knows what else.
It's fairly entertaining though I have some complaints.
One, the protagonist is a bit of a survivalist idiot. Fifteen+ chapters of the audience agonizing over her. (On a related note, the post-apocalyptic survivalism aspects aren't realistic, which is distracting since it occurs in NYC and up-state New York mostly. So, if you get into this, strongly suspend your disbelief).
Two, the protagonist tends to lack a lot of agency. Most of what happens happens to her, not because of her. There's a real excess of various forms of mind control she suffers from and every time one is resolved, a new one takes of place, which is frustrating.
Three, the protagonist only survives and move forward due to dumb luck and not any intrinsic heroic qualities. This is easy to ignore, but if you read a bit critically, this could be annoying.
Four, the LitRPG doesn't start until chapter 28. - AnimatorOfSoulsRoyal Road★★★ 3.0I like the premise of this novel, with all the spooky mysteries and soul eating monsters. However, the MC spends almost all of the time having various forms of mind control inflicted on her while she runs away. She never does anything interesting because she never gets a chance to learn anything.
