- TelRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Nothing better on a lazy Friday than a good book and some peace and quiet to read it in.
A++ all the way across, a delightful magic system, excellent pace, and a wild collection of well rounded characters and PoV chapters telling a rock solid story.
Always love a good multidimensional magic shop.
This one went to retail hell and back.
Honestly this may be the best thing I have found on royal road this year. - memahaloRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0A very nice story. A nice middle ground in terms of tone, not to serious and not to light. Has some nice humor that will make you smile.
This is one of the stories where it's less of a overall growth of a character and more of a story of characters already existing in the world. The characters in questions and fleshed out with their own motivations that make them interesting to read about.
My only complaint would be that it can be hard to track who is who through the multiple POVs. You understand who is doing what eventually though. The pace the author sets though may make it not very easy to do this however and he/she did well with the space they set.
Would recommend a read. Not extremely long and the plot moves a lot a good pace. Even has a nice ending the wrap things up. - small_sporeRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is a great read! I am disappointed that I found it through the 'surprise me' function instead of it being on rising stars, but the gacha sure gave me some good luck this time!
first though! the grammar annoyed me! I usually forgive this – we're all busy writing and editing is really something else, and usually involves even more time – but I think that it would be worth the story to go back through it and fix the typos.
Whew, ok, got that off my chest. Sorry. Loved the rest of the stuff! It was really sharp, and I loved the tight pacing, the set-up is brilliant, and while the ending is a bit of a 'deus ex machina' I don't think it's overly sloppy considering the setting and the progression of the narrative.
the prose is campy and schlocky in the funnest possible way, like a thriller or a cop drama (which I suppose this partially is) the paragraphs are short and addictive to read. The tone and style is really something, and I found myself giggling with excitement, which I appreciate. Sometimes the lines can be a little ham, but there's no harm in that.
The ideas are enjoyable and interesting, I especially loved that Martin was adding road signs and other random things into his spellwork. I'm really interested in the magic of highways and roads (kind of in the way that Roland Barthes calls the Citroen a 'purely magical object' – anyway sorry getting off track), and this (maybe throwaway that I am reading too much into) really resonated with me. The point is that there are quite a few of such brilliant ideas, and they are really enjoyable hints of a larger world that you are given space to imagine.
the characters are fun, though I was initially skeptical of all the story-lines, Donovan and Casey really grew on me, though maybe some of the characters are a bit flat, none of them annoyed me. Donovan really surprised me, I just wish he could have had some of his bold moves actually work out for him, though he did manage to survive being at everyone's mercy the whole s - XordaiiRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Honestly, this is a beautifully put together story. Only thing to improve might be spelling and grammar and some typos from erasing sentences.
I REALLY want to read more of this character's story. This world building is intriguing and seems to have so many stories yet to tell. For instance, stories about what kind of messes Martin's company cleans up. Does he ever get with the succubus or his druid friend? I'm not one for romances, the empathy for him just leaves that hanging in the air.
Review must be 50 words and I really have nothing more to say, except a word count on the editor would help. - librarysmilesRoyal Road★★★ 3.0There are multiple points of view (3 main ones) in this story.
The first point of view is from Martin Thibedeau, a store clerk and a mage with many secrets.
Martin/Marty lives in an alternate Earth that has both technology and hidden magic/ magic beings.
The second major point of view is Donovan, the man who shot Martin in the first chapter.
Both Donovan and Martin are sent to Hell in stores that mirror each other. They are in different places inside Hell. They encounter different things.
The third point of view is Casey, a man who is working with Martin's aunt Natalie to investigate Martin's case. They are digging through the magical secret society to try to unravel a conspiracy.
My favorite moment was the discovery that the convenience store never runs out of merchandise because they are now regenerated with magic. 🍱
