First off, the dialogue in this story is top notch. Never once did I feel like it was forced or unnatural, and the banter between characters is always fun. From the very beginning the dialogue makes the characters feel like real people with real, established relationships. It's good stuff.
This story is well-written and mistakes are practically nonexistent. The descriptions are colorful and vivid and frankly a pleasure to read. There are a few instances where I think paragraphs could flow together better, but honestly, it's such a small thing it doesn't hurt the reading experience at all.
The characters are just as good as everything else. Rasp, the main character, obviously has a hell of a destiny ahead to pursue and I can't wait to see where it goes. The side characters each have individual personalities and no one feels like a placeholder.
It took me a few chapters before I really started to like Rasp and become invested in him. I wanted more details about him in the first chapter but the author trickles something new about him in each chapter, and it pays off. There was a big twist about Rasp that I didn't see coming ;)
all in all, this is good stuff and a wonderful break from the relentless assault of litRPG. The world feels big, even though I haven't seen much of it yet. This story feels like it is actually going somewhere and it isn't just someone making it up as they go along. Read it!
I'm going to keep at this story and will eventually update this review to reflect when I'm further in but its obvious this author has put a lot of work into this and it's REALLY GOOD! - Forsaken FryRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0A fast-paced story with many unique characters set in a fantastical world that unfolds a little-by-little with each new chapter. Worth the read and I've hit both the follow and favorite buttons (this is a review swap, but doing such was not required).
Style: As mentioned, the pace is pretty quick, but the author takes her time to slow down when building towards the next story beat. She has done an excellent job using sentence length, paragraphing, and chapter length to guide the reader from one beat to the next.
Grammar: Excellent grammar, only a few very minor mistakes in the first ten chapters. I found they didn't impede my experience at all and the author responded positively to the feedback in the comments.
Character: My favorite part of the first ten chapters is the number of characters and how the author added depth through dialogue and descriptions, hinting that even minor characters have a story to tell in this world. However, this is also an area that can be confusing when combined with a quick pace, so I'm torn. I love the number and depth of characters, but it took me a few tries to get each of them sorted into my thick noggin. But, honestly, the writing is so smooth and the pace so fluid — I don't mind the extra reads.
Also Rasp... he's an uncooperative protagonist in the beginning (a trope I'm a little exhausted with), but he has totally won me over. Seriously folks, I'm team Rasp all the way (least for now).
Story: The world building is excellent, and while I always want to know more (especially about the Stoneclaws), I've been pretty impressed with how the world-building has been done at a natural pace rather than in giant exposition deliveries.
Overall, while the review swap was to chapter 10, I plan to keep reading and following this story/author — she's going to do great things. - GreenerRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Getting into a good fantasy read s all about being transported to a different world, with bright colors, beautiful scenes, and characters who can occupy your thoughts to the point you forget everything else. It’s not easy to write good fantasy, but it seems to the author of this story, that comes easy. And I congratulate her on it.
The narrative of the story is crisp with enough details that I can clearly see the story playing itself out. The images and scenarios she paints make it all so natural and appealing, and easy to fall into.
The conversations and situations are witty and dynamic, and it made me thirsty to know more about her main characters. The few chapters I read made me wonder what made them who they are and what is going to become of them, whether it’s Oralia being accused of being a witch (?), or the mystery around Rasp.
Obviously, the author is very skillful with words and does not go wasting them as many less experienced writers often tend to do. She does not need whole paragraphs to convey a message when only a few words are enough. I appreciate that quite a bit.
As I read the story, I tried to find something that bothered me with it, but that was just not there. The grammar and the speed of the story seemed perfect, and I did not require either to change.
So, the buttom line is that this story is exactly what I needed today, and I wholeheartedly recommend it to all the fantasy lovers out there. - JEPayneRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Like the title says, this is absolutely incredible writing. I'd pay top dollar for this in a book shop, so finding this readily available on rr is a travesty for which I am immensely grateful!
Style - the prose is consistent and vibrant without becoming purple. The descriptions and actions of the characters are clear and evocative, while the setting is painted in incredible detail to perfectly complement the story being told.
Story - early days but I'm all in as a reader! We've got mystical prophecies, a powerful realm chasing coin, belligerent mountain people and an exiled heir. The board has been laid out for an absolute cracker of a storyline and I can't wait to read through it all.
Grammar - I didn't see any issues, fantastically well written.
Character - I wish I could give this 10/5, the characters are so much better than the vast majority of what I see on rr. They're vivid, distinct and engaging to follow and get to know. The highlight so far has absolutely been Rasp and his relationship with Faris, but these are just unbelievably great standouts among an already stellar cast!
BONUS CATEGORY (HUMOUR) - I suppose I could put this under style, but I wanted to give it its own paragraph to stress how bloody funny this read is. Every chapter has me cackling like a madman, mostly at Rasp and Faris, but once the four are introduced they had my sides splitting as well. The author has a real talent!
All in all, this is one of my favourite stories on rr, I would pay good money for this in a book shop, and I've favourited and followed to capitalise on the fact I can read it right here! Don't pass up on this opportunity, give this story a go and I promise you won't regret it! - Lara Zanatti ReisRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I don't know where to start. So let's follow my notepad list (I like lists):
The start. You'll be caught on the first three lines. Not only will it present the type of humour that the author will gift you in the narration, but it is also flowing naturally. You won't see your giggles coming. I swear.
One of the things that most caught my attention was how descriptive it was whiteout being illustrative, and I thought the author was giving me the freedom to imagine my surrounding. Although I love it when other authors do so, there is a crucial reason for the user to leave us in the "dark", and realising that is a fantastic blast.
Dialogues! I love Dialogues! And the dialogue presented is natural, flowing, incredibly relatable and organic. A powerful narration as we are on the other side of the room eavesdropping.
I must give a massive bravo on how the author can hold mystery and cliffhangers. And at each end of the chapter, you'll want more.
Do I advise it? Yes, I definitely vouch for it. Unless you want something boring, with no action, no mystery, no ah-ah, then this novel is not for you 5/5. - LlazyLlamaRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0If anyone is reading this review, I implore you to go read the story. This is a solid piece of fiction that deserves to be read. Instead of reading a dozen chapters or so, I couldn't help myself from bingeing them all in a need to find out more.
Style: The author writes well. It's clean, clear, and enjoyable. Dialogue has a good amount of comedy and wit without everything turning into an unreadable mess. Wandering Brain Spasm does an excellent job of blending in levity to some of the potentially grittier parts of the story.
Grammar: I rarely ever doc grammar unless it's atrociously bad. And that has stayed the same. Not that you'd find any issues with grammar in the story. I'm spoiled in that I get to read chapters that have already been edited, and the author has done well in taking commenters' criticism and corrections.
Story: You might start off slightly confused by the first couple of chapters, but everything is revealed quickly enough that you're not left in the dark for long. Questions are answered, breadcrumbs are sprinkled throughout the chapters, and the story keeps a damn good pace all throughout. Even in scenes filled with dialogue, you'll find yourself eagerly reading without having to face massive infodumps or muddled worldbuilding. The fantasy setting of the story has a unique take on certain tropes that you wouldn't usually see in other stories.
Character: The characters are where the story shined for me. The MC, Rasp, makes the boring human interesting in a place filled with fauns, orcs, goblins, dwarves, and elves. The delight of magic and mystery surrounding Rasp adds to his snarky charm. Throw in some potentially insane group of people ruled by an orc captain a few centuries old, and you got one hell of a crew. You are introduced to a lot of characters early, but they have enough life and personality to distinguish them from each other. When you read into the later chapters, you start to realize just how much more to them than what you see on the - MOROSERoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Now, I ain't sayin' this story's a gold digger, I just have no luck at coming up with original review titles.
Style: The development of this story is quite natural and organic. Instead of needing infodumps, it generally proceeds through a sequence of dialogue and action through which the story and character become apparent. It has an interesting spin on the idea of a 'chosen one,' which is treated with some level of both humour and realism. Fans of series like the Order of the Stick might well enjoy this take on common storytelling tropes. The dialogue is done well, and conveys a sense of the setting.
Story: The story is set up in a fairly self-conscious way, putting a sense of perspective on archetypal themes. It evolves across the Chapters, and gains more complexity. Due to the hints at an apocalyptic threat, there is a lot of suspense and ambiguity in this novel's story, making it an interesting read.
Grammar: I didn't find any notable issues with the grammar. The English here is good, and adapts well to convey a sense of setting through the dialogue.
Character: As the story goes on, characters like Rasp become more pronounced and effective, standing out through their dialogue and the contrast between them and other characters. The earlier Chapters do well at conveying his tension, and the sense that it might be a prelude to a larger ordeal. In fact, it might have been nice if the story had made this sense of tension even more explicit earlier on, in order to foreshadow the direction of the story. Nonetheless, it is still effective. The rest of the characters often play on the archetypes which you might expect from this story, and this sets up an interesting journey going forwards. - ScholarPunkRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I was going to go with the classic style/story/grammar/character like review, but I think I will just YOLO it because all those categories compliment each other in this story. (Except for the grammar, which is mostly impeccable, and there's not much to say about it.)
The Silver Curse started really slow for me and I didn't care much about it at first. But as the story progressed further and further, it sucked me in completely. Like I said, the story starts slow but I quickly realized that this was not a bad thing. The author slowly builds the world and the plot, piece by piece like a jigsaw puzzle. You're thrown into the world and you have to collect information piece by piece from various descriptions and dialogue to understand how the world works and what are the motivations of the characters. It's not that hard to do that though, don't get me wrong. The author excels at giving you just enough information to not frustrate you, but also not bore you with info dumps. As the story advances, you learn more about Rasp and his backstory and it feels really satisfying to piece together different things.
The characters are probably the best aspect of this series for me. I really love the unique, witty dialogue between various characters. There's a really good humour that doesn't make you roll your eyes from cringe or edginess. Rasp's backstory is quite interesting and whenever the author gives you some information about his past, you want to learn more. Overall, he's a really interesting MC to follow.
I'm giving the style 4.5 stars instead of 5 stars just because of the author's style of writing dialogue. Like I said, the dialogue is really well done, but the author uses a lot of descriptions or inner thoughts in between dialogues and that kind of hinders the flow of the conversation. For instance, I would much rather prefer a dialogue like this:
"a" said x.
"b" said y.
"c."
"d."
Instead, the style is more like this:
"a" said x, frowning.
y smiled and raised his finger. " - VRHolmesRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I said this in one of my comments, but it's true: the only thing I don't like about this story is that it's not a physical book I can curl up and enjoy on my couch. Barring that, there isn't anything about it I haven't enjoyed so far. So let's get into it, shall we?
Style Score: Prose that is pretty without being purple. Good prose is something of a rare treat and I greatly appreciate it when I find it. The style to this story is very smooth and polished, and frankly it's of a professional quality. Typos and grammatical whoopsies are pretty few and far between, which is remarkable for something that I assume hasn't been sent through a professional editor yet. Honestly I'd give this story a shot just for the prose alone. 5*.
Story Score:
So if this wasn't going to be a 5*, it became so with the reveal that happens in chapter 6. Not going to tell you what it is, you'll just have to read it. I went back and skimmed a bit after the fact and the way it's handled is just top, top knotch. Beyond that, we've got some truly great, classic tropes shaping up. Shaping up with a well-crafted touch, to boot. I'm looking forward to seeing how this progresses, because I'm definitely hooked and plan to continue reading.
Grammar Score:
Nearly flawless. Author also seems to correct any mistakes readers do find promptly, so 5* here too.
Character Score:
Rasp is a character who's quirky and fun, and his rebellious attitude immediately sparks interest. He only gets better as you learn more about him and his past, which is remarkably tragic, as it turns out. By my point in the reading you certainly want to learn even more about him. His history gets spelled out through dialogue in a very natural fashion, so the author obviously has a grasp of how to go about seamless worldbuilding - which is a skill I don't always see. Glad when I do, though.
5* here as well. The other characters are equally as dynamic, and with the shifting limited-third-person-POVs, this is shaping up to be a delightful - Witchy and bitchyRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story has been a blast to read. I always stayed away from this type of story telling. They normally are too detailed to keep my interest. Let me tell you this author has changed my opinion. From the quick witt writeing that has me laughing out loud. To the character development. I'm obsessed, constantly waiting for a new chapter. I even created an account just to leave a review. The plot twists that have come up in this book has made me cling to the edge of my seat. Wandering brain spasm you have out done yourself. I can not wait to read more of this story.
