Description
How far can a broken soul endure?
Emma La Larum was a champion, beings that can bring entire armies to their knees. She was the dread that the brave feared, the nightmare that the monsters hid from, and the bane of entire legions. She was an all but a weapon in flesh. But beneath her bloody craft, she was once a girl who sought nothing more but the warmth of family. A warmth she was denied of even in her death.
For once, Emma quietly embraces her escape, but even death had betrayed her as she wakes up back to her youthful days. Although her body was healthy and beautiful once more, her mind teeters on the edge of oblivion. Broken and half mad, Emma abandoned her name and family in hopes of finding refuge from the horrors of war, yet it's shadow could never leave her alone.
The Silent Heir explores the psychological damage and trauma a person would have if they were reincarnated. Everything up to that point will be remembered. Good and bad memories alike. Unfortunately for this story, the memories that can be count as one are limited. It also tries to tell a story what a ptsd might look like for a soldier after their death should the memory persists. I am in no way experienced anything this level of experiences, but I will do my best in writing them justly.

- TrochiRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is a story of incandescent rage and despair, of sorrow and hatred. And of vengeance. Of a shattered soul reincarnated into an earlier part of her life, but unable to overcome the trauma she lived. As we read this, we at first hope that our heroine will find a path to happiness, but unfortunately, the ghosts of her past and the reality she flees from cannot be easily escaped. The more we read, the more we suspect she will not find peace until she destroys not just her family but quite possibly the whole kingdom.
This is a wonderfully written story, but it is not a cheerful fluffy story. If revenge speaks to your heart, if you love a good tragedy, if emotional angst is your thing, this is a story for you. If you are in search of a cavorting bunnies and a 'happily ever after' ... yea, maybe look elsewhere. - Death Threat CollectorRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story hurts to read... In a good way.
The story itself is... Well, exactly what the summary advertises, it's a good summary, it's descriptive, it's thematic, it's accurate... Yet it really doesn't do the story justice. It's just... A generic, matter of fact description of what the story is about. But what it doesn't tell is just how viscerally real it feels at times. How you get dragged away with the characters' emotions and get swept away in the story... But then again, how'd you possibly put that feeling into a synopsis?
I started reading with the intent of having a quick taste of the story before bed, yet here I am in the morning without sleep writing a very deserved review. THANK YOU VERY MUCH AUTHOR! It's not like sleep is important or anything!
The characters all feel real, they feel like flawed people doing their best and often failing. I really wish them all the best and I can't help but wonder... Where did things go so wrong? It also makes me mad/sad because it looks like it could've been a really wholesome story instead but no, we get this! ;-; I love the story, don't get me wrong, but man, my heart ain't gonna survive this journey.
Style is such a vague word that means so much and yet so little. Does it refer to stories preferred to write, how the page is made up, or something else? Regardless, while I find nothing unusual about the stylistic choices of the story, reading as a fairly generic fantasy and nothing unusual about how it's written... It's well executed, and execution is always the most important.
Grammar errors I personally found none, I'm not exactly militant about that stuff, but I do generally have a good eye for grammar and I've found absolutely no problems whatsoever.
Now, if you don't mind, I'm gonna look up puppies and kittens. - JazzyPellyRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Thelolp777 give me a hug, damn is this making me tear up really hoping for at least a moderately happy ending.
Very emotional story, most emotionally compelling story I've read on RR so much so I can't think of anything else to type
Fantastic work Thelolp777 👍 👍 emojis count as words yay. - Haru Desu KattoRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5This is an exceptional tale with deep themes, more about emotions and feelings than action - a rare gem for Royal Road. It's definitely worth reading, though there are some road bumps as noted below.
Style is where this story shines. The setting is fairly typical, but the degree of focus on the various characters' inner turmoil, betrayal, and broken spirits is interesting, exciting, and different.
Story is a close second. The pacing is probably too slow for the desires of most readers, but that's exactly why I love it! On the other hand, there are some inconsistencies between chapters as facts get switched around and characters seem to be overly forgetful of critical information that they have learned.
Grammar and arrangement of dialogue is atrocious, but easy to forgive. I realize the writer is not a native English speaker. With an editor, this story could really shine. Furthermore, the quality definitely improves as the story proceeds. The first few chapters are painful, but it gets better. Regardless, I can still figure out the meaning that is intended, so I don't care that much.
Characters are deep with conflicting internal drives. Unfortunately, since I have no experience with addressing trauma or emotional scars, I have no idea whether the depiction is accurate and realistic or not. On the other hand, from what I've studied, every case in reality is different, so I suppose it's reasonable?
Looking forward to more! - Shanu28Royal Road★★★★★ 4.5I really liked this novel, the charater building, inner turmoil of charaters, the description of panic attacks and how they took hold of a person, inner workings of her mind with such trauma, and pace of the story.
[Spoiler]
But the end feels rushed, the death of two important family members, revelation of Seth's past with her, her leaving her home behind.
So, is there a second part, bcoz this does feel like an end, more like a cliffhanger. - StuffyQueenRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5To start, I don't think I've seen any story quite like this one on Royal Road. It takes reincarnation with baggage to a whole other level. Expect psychotic breakdowns, self hatred, self harm and emotional turbulence galore.
Style has always been something I've struggled with quantifying as I often get so sucked in to stories that I tend to miss all the small things, but I think I can say that this story definitely feels like a newer author coming into their own cadences and figuring things out. It definitely feels a little rough around the edges, but for me, it feels very much like a seesaw between hope for a better life and despair at setbacks and backsliding.
Despite being what I think is their first story, it has excellent pacing and beautifully utilizes many different plot points to always leave you guessing and surprised. The story felt very natural, and arcs/scenes didn't feel like they dragged on forever.
The biggest thing that I noticed while reading was the grammar. For the first half (~chapters 1-20) the grammar felt very rough and unpolished, often taking me out of the story to try and figure out the intended message behind certain sentences, but it steadily got better as the story went on. If you are thinking of picking this up but the grammar disuades you, I promise it gets much better later on, it is absolutely worth reading through it despite the grammar.
Finally the characters. Like I said before, it starts out a little rough, but gets much better very fast. There are a couple of characters that didn't feel fleshed out quite enough for them to have the intended impact on the story, but the author acknowledged as much and made plans to fix some of it so I am perfectly happy giving this a full rating.
Overall, if you are looking for a tragedy and to feel down, this is the story for you. I really enjoyed binging this in about a day (plus all night), and I think it is definitely worth a read if you are into these kinds of stories. - GhostlyGooseRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5The Silent Heir is a web of trauma with the main character being the locus. Living life again from a younger age, our PTSD stricken heroine is greatly changed from how she originally was. Her trauma blinding her to the fact that others have not been shaped by events yet to happen. Trying to heal while reconciling competing internal drives of safety and righteous fury. Overall really excellent work.
- CSDestroyerRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0Note:This will be a spoiler-free review.
This story brings forth a specific angle of a popular premise that is not commonly explored: Reincarnation/time travel/do-overs, some aspect of where a protagonist is sent back to their past from a future that has not gone well. The angle it has taken, however, relates to the memories that they carry over, the emotions they attribute to things in their past, and most importantly, the trauma that come with those memories and emotions. This specific approach is surprisingly rare, and I am glad to have found a piece that explores it.
STYLE
Style is subjective, different writers will vary in style, and some people might like it, others might not. I can see where the author is getting at, and I personally like the approach. While I do feel as though improvements can be made, it would be difficult for me to give an assessment without imposing my own opinions on style. It can do with improvement, which comes with time and writing.
GRAMMAR
The grammar itself is mostly fine. It is the formatting that could potentially be an issue.
Whenever there is a new speaker, or the subject of what is being talked about changes, there is a new paragraph. Sometimes, I find it difficult to distinguish who is talking in a sentence, as there would be a lack of a line break between dialogue from two different characters. Other times, dialogue would end in periods rather than commas:
Indignation burned their hearts as they screamed. "You even had the gall to glare! ["]
["...] I'm still here." Emma whispered [...]
["...] By then, I am expecting an answer from you." The duke added [...]
In these particular sections, I would have done one of two things: Use a comma to 'trail' the dialogue off into the next sentence.
["...] I'm still here," Emma whispered [...]
["...] By then, I am expecting an answer from you," the duke added [...]
Or, I would have split it off into its own paragraph:
Indignation burned their hearts as they screamed.
"You even had the gall
