- BeyogiRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Space Explorer Frank picks up a distress signal and rescues the damaged vessel. As it turns out it wasn't humans, but a group of aliens run afoul an alien space pirate.
The story is about learning more about the aliens and the aliens learning more about humanity. Cultural confusion, exchange of trade goods and culture.
So far the plot has been focussed on returning the aliens to their home system, though now that they have arrived things may get a bit more political (or end the story as the author might not feel confident writing about that)
The whole thing has touches of HFY, with human military tech apparently lol-noping dangerous space pirates, but overall it's mostly about first contact and xenocultural interaction.
Honestly a very interesting story that I hope is continued soon. - DarthKittenRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5A bit of a slow burn as far as plot development goes but has enough background building going on to keep interest. As of this review point the stage is still being set with new tech, aliens and hints of a greater galactic conflict. The aliens are entirely too human in their nature but this keeps the conversations easy to follow and prevents the eternally cliché “misunderstanding” trope from being the driving motivator for trivial conflict. The stage, characters, and style remind me of the hard science fiction stories I read in the sixties and seventies.
- RznRoyal Road★★★★ 3.5This is a good inversion of some of the classic tropes. The premise here is simple, but it is a bit of curve to the reader which pays off quick enough to resolve the confusion quickly. Mostly because the reading is so short that the author has to resolve it quickly or leave it hanging on purpose. This is a good short read.
