The Shadows Become Her

Description
A fantasy progression, a coming of age story, and a tale of revenge...
Alvixia "Vix" Altorelli's idyllic childhood is disrupted in one tragic night when the duke's fanatics ransack the Altorelli home and imprison the rest of her family, selling them into slavery across the ocean. Vix soon finds herself fleeing for her life and her freedom, fleeing to the faraway city of Floria on an island ruled by the mysterious Nurass, Prince of Shadows. In Floria, Vix's sharp mind and talent for magic land her a spot at the Perdita Free Collegium, the world's greatest school for spies, saboteurs, swashbucklers, seductresses and, some claim, practitioners of dark magic... and that suits Vix just fine. If the Collegium wants to give Vix the tools she needs to save her family and get her revenge on Duke Orso, she'll take that deal any day of the week and twice on Saintsdays, even if that means making a deal with the Prince of Shadows himself. This is Vix's tale.

- Agent8606Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0I like it. Normally I don't write reviews, but this one was enjoyable enough for me to do so. The protagonist is fun, the story has both its ups and its downs in terms of tone. The author writes stuff from the characters perspective, but when they think something needs to be expanded on they'll add a little note at the bottom which has helped flesh out the world greatly.
- Akten DreamsRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Overall I will say that the story is very good. It has its kinks but I like them.
Style - The style is unique in a sense. It's a mix of older MC talking about her past and how some of the things worked and happened. The older MC sets the worldbuilding of the characters while the younger one well lives it, I guess. This style is very hard to pull off so I am happy to read it. It can be a bit disjointed but it's not that bad, especially by RR standards. Tho how it would look when MC grows up will be different and the style returns to normal storytelling.
Grammer - Basically 99% perfect. The things that I did notice I double-checked and it sounded like it was part of the story and not a grammar fault.
Story - The story itself is a bit unique due to the way it is told. I have no complaints with the story itself. The worldbuilding is good and the flow of the story is consistent with no bad anything so far.
Character - Everybody that has appeared so far has a unique feel to them so I have no complaints. Their logic is sound from what I read. Their characters are consistent with their actions. If there is a complaint it is that the story is still in the early parts so I cant review it any more thoroughly.
This note is for the author - I am a writer so I am speaking from experience. Since this is a serial and not a book, where the author has the experience, chapter names are far more important than one thinks.
Since the chapters come out consistently unlike how it is when you read a book, names pull in more viewers if each chapter is named individually and not just adding a number by it to indicate progress.
It has taken me a while to figure that one out, so I am sharing the little tidbit of knowledge. I hope it will help you.
The story has a good chance to reach a high trending rank, unlike mine.
With that said, I wish you good luck with the writing.
Yours truly, Akten Dreams. - AutobotRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0One of my new favorites. An example of terrific writing. While the story does get dark at times that is because life does too. The characters are real and vibrant, the world building is excellent, and while there has only been a little bit of the magic system shown it has been well thought out.
Very few authors on RR delve this deeply into languages, culture, or religion. And the author does an amazing job of it all. I'm excitedly looking forward to more. - R L GreyRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The Shadows Become Her is an in-depth story about a girl's journey to become a Shadow: mage-spies, warriors, and seamen, after her old life was torn apart. Its got an interestig magic system that I look forwards to learning more about, and a large, life-like world that I can't wait to explore.
Style: The novel is written as if the main character was telling a story, being able to give insights into the workings of the world with their knowledge whilst also being able to tell the story of someone who has none (and is learning with the rest of us).
Story Score: The story is logical and entertaining, the two things I believe any good story should be. Everything that happens makes sense in the context of the world, there are no plot holes that I can see, and the world is so vivid and expansive that it actually makes reading the passages of a history textbook (or in this case, C.L.Robinson's mini explanations at the end of the chapters) enjoyable.
Grammar: I have spotted no errors so far and if anyone does and comments it, it will be fixed quickly.
Characters: The only section that misses out on a 5 star rating, albeit barely. I love all the side characters that have been introduced so far, each has their own life outside of the story's plot and that life continues onwards despite the little bump out main characters cause in them. However, the main characters are slow to change. Not to say they don't, but whilst they have emotional reactions to the events that take place, some of those don't translate fully into character development. Now this may just be my personal preference, and I'm enjoying the character development they are going through. Hence, 4.5 stars. - TheakornRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I was blown away by the Shadows Become her. The world-building, characterization, story and writing are to notch. It becomes immediately clear that a lot of thought and preparation has been done to write this story.
I would reccomend all would-be writers to read this story and note how CLRobinson has made this world come alive. From the cultures and religions with their varied traits and rituals. Captains court. Cities with plot-relevant local history. Actual last names that gets used. Names and adjectives for every country. All this creates a world that feels populated by real people and peoples.
The writing is good, and CLRobinsons writing chops are shown throughout the story.
The story progresses at a decent pace. At some points I wished for at faster resolution to some arcs, but as I read on I find that the arcs and sub-arcs are resolved in a timely manner. An exampe is an early maritime arc.
Any nitpick I have is that the main character is abit too young (a common issue), but the writing is good I can actually manage suspend disbelief on this. So far we have followed the main character for a few years, and I find that she and her friends are showing some decent character growth, and I am looking forward to see how they and the story turn out. - WatashaeRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I’m loving this story. The world and the character building and development makes for a very enjoyable read. If your haven’t considered reading this story, please give it a try. Slow to start but quickly picks up speed. The children’s escapades reminds me of my childhood when if there was any trouble to get into us brothers were sure to heading that way.
- gallandro83Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story comes as a good start to a serial that seems planning for a long term casee study of an orphan in a magical world. It's quite obvious that the author has a well thought out worldscape and magic system that we are following the MC in discovering. The pacing is slow building more in character development and world building to hold readers than fast paced action. Though the slower more individual plot of a child we see the shadows of larger plots and events we might be drawn into. The only issue with serials is if much of the promise of such grand ambition can be fulfilled. Regardless the polish and professionalism of the author promises a great story.
Style- marked down because the full story hasn't progressed enough to see if author can tie up the various plot lines will update
In general vix is a decent MC but never having been a precosious little girl it's sometimes hard to empathize with her. The bones of a strong character are there but the writing of the trauma she experiences means her personality feels unsettled and growing leaving the reader a bit disengaged. I notice that I connect with her more when she describes events with more of her own physio-emotional reactions than her observations. - pomegranateRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Very good, I enjoy reading this a lot. Well written, especially for a web serial. I hope author keeps writing this because it is good. I am going to keep saying it is good to get to word count. Characters are interesting and real. My only complaint is tha I have to wait to read more but that is the nature of web serials. Keep up the good work.
- saxifragousRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I am a simple reviewer, if I found the story enjoyable I give it a good review. This story has been a fun read so far; I hope the author releases more chapters for me to read. Since reviews need to be fifty words long I shall say the world building, characterization, plot, and writing style are all great. The author has quite the lexicon.
- BrellRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0A fantastic story of pirates, magic, and promised revenge. CLRobison is a capable writer, who places a nuanced cast in a marvelous coastal and nautical setting.
The author deftly shows us the story start with three precocious pre-teens taking turns being sweet kids and causing mischief.
While not a comedy, humor certainly gets good use in the story.
