The Rune Thief [Mana Cultivation, Progression Fantasy]
Community Rating
Description
In a bustling city where magic, swords, and technology intertwine, Kivi is a skilled thief who uses her wit and ancient runes to pull off impossible heists. She is known all over the slums for her daring escapades. Her latest heist shouldn´t have been anything special, just some artifact, a compass, the boss of the local underground commissioned her to obtain.
But the plan derails, and Kivi barely escapes with the compass through an unstable portal. She is hurled into a sprawling, untamed wilderness—uncharted and brimming with creatures and magic she has never seen before. Cut off from her team, her plans, and the world she knows, Kivi will have to use her wits and runes to survive.
Escape is only the beginning. The compass seems to be no ordinary treasure. Kivi has no idea what it is for or where it points toward, but every faction in the kingdom and beyond seems to want it for themselves, from noble mages to the thieves-guild. And they are willing to hunt Kivi to the ends of the earth to obtain it.
She will need to decide whether she is willing to finish her job or whether she should keep the compass for herself. Try to decipher what all the fuss is about and claim the possible benefits.

- Idiot MuffinRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The story begins in silence and grows with you as you keep reading. The writing has a raw and grounded quality that makes the world feel harsh but alive, and the prose is clean and careful, with an unhurried rhythm that matches the protagonist’s slow awakening to her surroundings.
What I found most interesting about the narrative was the subtle balance of survival and introspection. What starts as a struggle against the world becomes a quiet study of thought and creation, and I loved the curiosity that came along with that. The tone is consistent, yet it shifts in subtle ways as the protagonist learns, and those changes feel earned. The story trusts the reader to stay with it, to sense meaning rather than be told.
Kivi is written with restraint. She is not explained or softened but revealed through action and repetition. Her growth feels natural, shaped by the world’s roughness rather than by exposition. That distance gives her a strange power. You don’t always understand her, but you believe her.
The grammar and sentence structure are precise and deliberate. There is no clutter, no excess description, and the dialogue, when it appears, feels real. The writing has a rhythm that invites patience. It rewards close reading.
Overall, these chapters build an atmosphere that lingers. The story feels like something slowly being carved rather than written. It is thoughtful, immersive, and confident in its silence. - Rowdha Al SolRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Don't remember how I stumbled across this story, but so far it's extremely intriguing. My main points are going to die down to the presentation and the rune-based magic system. I find things quite functional to the narrative instead of being sidelined for the sake of genre. This is an early review because my brain is currently very engaged. I also think this is really well-written and feels like close to traditional publication ready. The only things that hold it back are slight redundancies and moments where things could be said in much less words without losing the effect. That said, these issues are few and far between. Most of this is very good.
- Brian HemingRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The story starts out action packed, with the protagonist's character delightfully developed in the course of a heist. We almost immediately get on the trail of the MacGuffin, and the story is delightfully fast paced.
The story briefly slows down as the cultivation system and runemagic system are explored, but these are thought through with enjoyable complexity and engineering theory. The world is definitely magitech, not just magic.
I'm excited to see where the compass brings our hero--but I hope it's not just an endless hike while levelling up magic skills. So far, it's definitely on the action/adventure side of the hike. - AmharRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0An action packed fast paced cultivation novel set in a medieval/magitech world.
The main character is a daring and cunning thief, that seems well prepared to execute complicated heists, even though the rest of her crew don't always act that profesionaly which can lead to complications.
It is a bit early still to see how the story will develop, as of now, (chapter) the story touches themes like survival, adaptation and how to confront solitude and not gives up when you only can count on yourself and your training.
Although it promises to be a rich blend of rune-based magic, survival elements, and a clear progression system centered around mana cultivation later on. The world-building hints at a multifaceted realm divided among multiple kingdoms and factions, each with its own motives and intricacies. Even if it is not always said explicitly.
The few characters we have seen until now are morally ambiguos, which is god, because it is coherent with the marginated part of society they come from.
In summary: a fresh spin and unique take on the cultivation genre. That exploits not so widely used ideas and tries for their characters to feel like real people.
I am eager to see how the rest of the story will unfold. - Eternal WinterRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Overall
The Rune Thief is a fusion of Western fantasy and Eastern Xianxia concepts. If you like creative magic systems, core progression, and traveling adventure stories, then this story is for you. It has strong characters, beautiful descriptions, and good pacing. There are a few hiccups with paragraph structure and awkward dialogue, but both are improving and don't hold back the work as a whole.
Style
In a word, it's picturesque. The author is not afraid to paint a picture of every location through beautiful imagery and rhetorical devices. At some spots, I would call it too much, but that's a matter of personal taste. Also, these descriptions seem to be focused mainly on the environment rather than people. Another positive is that, except for one part (You know the part author), there is hardly any info dumps. The one sticking point is that some of the dialogue sounds a bit awkward and this is likely because the author is not a native English speaker. However, this problem quickly lessens in later chapters as the author becomes more practiced.
Story
So far, the story has primarily been about the stealing of the compass and the immediate consequences. The pace has been quick so far without feeling rushed. There is a good amount of foreshadowing, about future important characters, the compass, and the nobles that they have stolen from. It makes me confident in the quality of future arcs and twists. The only thing that doesn't make sense to me is why one of the side characters was sent on the mission as he makes a ... mess. Hopefully, this will be explained in future chapters. The author's current ability makes me optimistic.
Oh, and the goats were a creative touch. Certainly more creative than most Xianxia enemies.
Grammar
The grammar is nearly perfect, but many non-dialogue paragraphs are too short.
Character
At the moment, we have really been introduced to three characters. The MC and her initial two comrades. Majid has done an outstanding job at making each feel - Demonic HeavenRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Overall- I like the story so far, the beginning introduces the main character very well. I quickly understood her position in the world and what her situation was. As I read the next chapters I was introduced to new things the world has and I didn't feel overwhelmed by it. In the first chapters, there is only a glimpse into a magic system that looks interesting with separate use of magic runes and casting spells.
Style- The story is written in first person and sometimes it feels like reading a diary and sometimes it's written like we are in the main character's head, currently reading her thoughts. Sometimes this second way of writing seems weird to me but it might be because it was my first time reading something like this.
Characters- In the first few chapters we meet many characters but mostly three. Each one of them is very distinct and in a good way. They are very well-written and two of them are likable. One character is not but it's on purpose to show stains of this world.
The world doesn't seem plain, it holds many secrets that will be revealed further into the story as we only got a glimpse of a massive worlds hidden in next chapters.
I would say it is a very good story that deserves attention - ThatHydeKidRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0I stumbled across this story recently, and I have found it to be quite delightful. A new twist of orphan/lost noble outwitting their Fagan and getting a reward they did not realize they were entitled to have. First, we have a complex setup and a long series of crazy adventures that end up being the backstory, but the MC does realize the context of the situation or story. The bad guys are bad, and I doubt we have seen the end of them yet.
I have found it well written and interesting. The plot/story is just beginning to be unveiled. Who is the real bad guy? There are two principal candidates. Who are the rebels? There are two worlds to play with and reasonable character development.
