Book 1 is now available as an ebook, audiobook, or paperback!
Lyra Treble thought getting into the Royal Academy of Magical Baking would be the difficult part. It was just the beginning.
In a world where magical professions tend to follow family trees, Lyra is an unusual ingredient. Everyone expected her to become a bard, but Lyra proves her love of baking by gaining entrance to the most exclusive, prestigious magical baking academy in the land.
The academy is everything Lyra dreamed of and more. She loves the rigorous curriculum, the strict but fair professors, and her new friends-turned-family. Still, with a limited number of slots open for next year, her culinary future is not guaranteed — and not everyone believes a musician should be a baker.
Now Lyra must navigate cutthroat competition, betrayal, love triangles, and her own insecurities to find her place in the magical baking world. But with the help of her new family, and a pinch of joy, she might just change that world’s recipe forever.

- ArcaniusRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Exquisite! Some truly fine first chapters, I must say. I got to chapter 6 before I even realized xD
This needs to be an anime, full stop. It would be sooo good, would watch the hell out of it :P
My only complaint so far is the very sudden romantic interest displayed, but considering she is a teenage girl, it makes sense.
Im interested to see how the story will go, because while the start has been strong, whether baking will keep being interesting in future chapters still remains to be seen.
And again, truly splendid words so far. The writing has improved by leaps and bounds since Wordmaster. Congratulations!~ - AilornRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is a cozy story that mixes baking and magic. The plot is somewhat predictable based on the premise of the main character who has a bard background joins a magic school for prestigious bakers. The characters are a bit one dimensional but they are likeable and they change and grow during the story. This reads like a very well written middle grade/YA fantasy. While simple on the surface it is well executed and the setting is cozy and charming. It's in a similar vein as Legends and Lattes. It is comfortable to come back to this story and I miss it when it isn't a update day. This is overlooked and I highly recommend it. I can't wait for it to be made into an audiobook.
Also Boysen is Best Boy hands down. - Deathlier OreoRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is very much a YA story -- intended with all the implications (good and bad) that label provides.
The MC is a teenager of unspecified age who enters a magical baking academy, in the form of a baking show-style competition, where each term a different baker is eliminated. It's a sweet, slice-of-life romantic coming of age, with little focus given to progression or the wider world. It's about as sweet as any story I've ever read, with pretty much every character having a baking ingredient as a name and the phrase 'sweet and savory' as the expletive of choice (or from the MC's singing family, 'sharps and flats'). It has lots of symbolism and baking metaphors about people and life, and each of them is about as subtle as a brick to the head (or as this story would put it, a fistful of cinnamon). The story is often cloyingly sweet, and it's about as predictable as they come -- at least to me it seemed pretty obvious who will be eliminated when by the 10th chapter, and so far it's following the track perfectly. The wider world beyond the academy and the MC's homes are entirely unexplored, and there are things that would make NO sense if they were to be explored further.
But at the end of the day, all of these 'downsides' are exactly what I'd expect from a YA fantasy romance coming-of-age slice-of-life magical baking story. If you don't enjoy YA stories, you definitely won't enjoy this. But if you DO...it's hard to find anything at all at fault in this story. For all it's predictability, it's extremely cozy and fun to follow the MC's journey. She's relatable and easy to root for. The messages taught are great. The language is suitable for all ages. It's easy to get immersed in the story. No grammar mistakes I noticed and the style is super easy to read.
This story is not for everyone, as it breaks away from many of the preferred genre tropes of royalroad. But for those who enjoy cozy YA slice of life stories, this story is about as perfect as they come. - X-RHODEN-XRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This isn't a review swap, it really IS that good!
I was taking a break from my own work and happened to stumble across this in the new updates. A story about magical baking at an academy? Why not! I needed to cool off and relax a bit.
Lo and behold, I was hooked from the first chapter.
Lyra's such a great character to follow, her struggles seem real, her worries and concerns are what a young aspiring student in her position should have, and yet, she comes into the world of magical baking as an outsider of sorts. This is great for us, the reader, because we get to learn about and explore the world alongside her. The world-building and the magic are so well done too! Who would've thought there's spells for altering the fluffiness of a cake?
This story's not exactly the genre that I write, and definitely not what I usually read. But despite these things, somehow, it's got me hooked!
The writing quality is excellent, above most things on this site, and you can tell the author knows what they're doing as world-building is appropriately sprinkled in through dialogue and exposition at the right moments. The other characters also seem quite fleshed out and this is looking to be quite the entertaining school year.
If anyone wanted to read a magical baking progression fantasy where the talented underdog without an elite background comes in and makes her mark, this is it. - Dust45Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0A fun slice of life with low stakes and lots of sweetness. Do not come here for action and power leveling (I like those things, too). The characters are strong, the world building is slow but interesting. I particularly love the use of baking idioms. For example, "Sweet and Savory!" and "Well if the salt isn't calling the sugar white..." I shared it with my wife and she has read more chapters than I have. Give it try if you like Bake Off with a dash of Harry Potter.
- ZSGRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Baking but not too in depth, singing but not shoved down your throat. Slice of truly delightful but not perfect life and what I'm considering a book 1 ending that works perfectly while not being completely obvious - I mean plot armour plus protagonist but still surprising enough to leave you satisfied but wanting more. There's a ship that hasn't sailed yet and the feeling of much more story to explore but also a lovely sense of completion.
- AnimakittyRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5This has been a lot of fun to read. The characters are mostly distinct, the magic system is fun, and the dialogue is on point. I think Macaron could've used more development, the sensory descriptions of the food could be more detailed, but the musical references certainly have the ring of truth (from someone who knows nothing about music's technical side)
- ItCanBeFunToRunAwayRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5For me, the character names are one of the greatest things about this story - They're so wonderfully ridiculous, and they set the tone of the piece as this cute and cozy brightly-coloured story about aspiring bakers.
And then, subtly, personalities & agendas start to undercut it. Our protagonist is usually out of her depth, but how far? - SassySquatchRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5The story is quite interesting and manages to, for me at least, straddle the line between there are literally no stakes and the stakes are so high the book can't afford to have anything but the good ending come to pass. In addition I love that all of the characters seem to have both positive and negative traits and the story does an excellent job of balancing those to create characters who are clearly making mistakes but in a way that is interesting and understandable and not just mistakes to drive the plot.
- MechanismRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0The quality of the story seems just fine to my untrained eyes but I can't help but have two subjective complaints. First it seems a whole lot like a reality show with how competitive and melodramatic it is. Secondly it could really stand to be stranger. The characters are mostly just ordinary humans and the magic they use is just an extension of cooking skills. But what if the magic changed how we think about baking. I'd love for a character to sacrifice a pie to a dark god to enhance their cake or use magic to make crystals edible.
Sorry I'm letting my imagination ruin this story, keep up the good work.
