Description

Six hundred years ago, the First Shaman's destroyed the earth by opening up the door to hell. The Blight consumed the land and turned the soil into a poisoned mush. Demons swarmed the land. Humanity was forced to retreat into isolated communities guarded by the very shaman's who were responsible for the world's destruction, and now the fate of those few and far between sanctuaries of life are hanging at the edge of the sword.

When the muckraker Ike is rescued from death by the most holy Raveness, he'll do anything to repay the life debt he owes and to escape the monotonous fields of despair guardian Cadeloch. Bound together by the monastic order's meddling and an equal desire to save the world from annihilation, these two embark on a journey to the Black Palace to put an end to the apocalypse once and for all.

The best thing about this story is that all the characters feel alive.
Everyone has a reason for behaving the way they do. And their actions all make sense and I can pretty much symphatize with everyone.
Grammar is also on point. It flows easily enough.
The story itself is intriguing. And the way the plot develops has me hooked from the start.
Now I just want to read more.

loving the story so far, interested to see why it has a "historical" tag, I hope you keep it going and don't drop it.

Great story! The characters are interesting and the grammar is spot on. The only complaint is it starts a little slow. Overall the story very enjoyable and one of my current favorites on Royal Road. I can't wait to read more!

This one had me from the first line. The setting is grimy and brutal in all the right ways—like Dark Souls met The Mist and then got dragged through a trench. Ike’s voice felt real, grounded, and just cynical enough to work. The buildup to the attack was tense and slow-burning, and when it all went sideways, it hit. The demons were nasty and creative, and Reyna’s banter cut through the tension perfectly. There’s some room to tighten the flow and clean up a few grammar bits, but overall? Visceral, bleak, and damn effective. Nicely done.

Overall the prose and plot was pegged in the teen range, not quite the complexity of YA, but more than simple sentences of a Juvenile.  At the same time, language and subject matter weren't really appropriate for kids.  Not really sure what to characterize it as.
It takes about 20 chapters in before the first appearance of magic/fantastical elements, so an awfully slow burn compared to most of the rest of royal road.  There is also a pretty big untagged gender swap accompanied by a sexual orientation swap of the main character that may be offputting to some not long after magic gets going.
Magic system is soft so far, but haven't gotten too in depth in it.
Characters have that children's book feel of good good guys, bad bad guys, no nuance is good nuance.  But each character is fairly distinctive and consistent.
Grammar is pretty good, small stuff repeatedly missed  Comma's offsetting someone's name when they are addressed in dialogue are missing.  "What's up John?" and "What's up, John?"  are two different questions and the error persistted throughout.  Other minor issues as well.
Overall in my opinion, definitely better than a lot of stuff out there on the interwebs, but also definitely gotta be a niche audience to really enjoy it though.  I made it around 30 chapters in and won't be back, but would read something else from the same author.
