- EanRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Ok, I am no writer, and I don't really feel adequate to critique others work, which is why this is my first and maybe only review of a story, but I find this thing Giftpack created to be so strange in such a fantastic way.
Every chapter is bite size, though they come out often. This WOULD irritate me usually, but for some weird reason it works masetrfully here. I am excited for every chapter, and at the end I am satisfied every single time, almost as if every chapter is a small story in and of itself. The author gives so little information, wich makes every word essential to read, yet by the end of the chapter I get the feeling that I got ALL the information that I needed.
I want to ramble on and on about the style of this story, because so far I've been surprised with every single chapter, but I'll finish off with saying that Ive never seen anything like it, and several chapters are simply beautiful. The author invokes stronger emotions with fewer words then anybody else I've seen and it's amazing.
The style of the story is what really makes this story shine, but the characters are great to. Since there isn't alot of info every chapter, often times side characters can be easily as fleshed out as the main character. The chapters however fly by so fast that giving substance to the side characters doesn't bog down the story, and yet I personally feel that by this point in the story, I have a pretty good understanding of the main character even though much of his backsory and past are still unknown.
The story is a LitRPG with a twist that I feel is better discovered through reading the story, especially since the world and it's base principles haven't yet been fully given to the reader at this point in time. Though this is part of the authors writing style and an intentional storytelling choice.
The only thing I can detract some few points from this story is with the grammer. There are some rare misswritten words here and there, or phrases with missing but non conseque - The Boiled FrogRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0What we have here is a LitRPG without the blue boxes of progression. There're skills gained and artifacts acquired. Dungeons are delved and bosses defeated. Quests can and will fail, and companions die.
The MC struggles. This is not an easy world to live in. As much as things can go right, they can also go horribly wrong. However, he does grow. It's not easy, nothing is handed to him, but he does not stagnate.
It's written in densely packed bite size chapters that you could read on a ten minute break. Grammar and punctuation are not perfect, but you should not have issues understanding what is happening.
The story is told without assuming that you need in depth descriptions of everything. Artifacts and skills are explained via story elements. If you are unfamiliar with LitRPG stories, some of it may seem a bit odd to you.
However, fear not dear potential reader!
This is a very enjoyable web series. Our author does not leave you hanging on the Cliffs of Insanity and the terrible day for rain will end. All is not hopelessness and loss. That's not to say that you can expect large swaths of peace, but you will find moments of calm and understanding.
In conclusion, I'd have to say that it is definitely worth it to give this story a try. It's been enjoyable from the beginning and pleasantly surprising with how well it has matured.
Cheers to all! - perplexnRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I thrououghly enjoyed the story that was being written in such a manner it didn't feel like it was an rpg. I felt more immersed and enjoyed how the author used aspects from rpgs in a way that seemed more fantasy adventure and less like you're playing a typical game of DND.
- sabazurcRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Interesting action / fantasy with even more interesting style. Chapters are short but writer still manages convey a lot. For me, as someone who has read A LOT of action / fantasy online it's understandable and nice read but for people who have not read much it might be difficilt to follow. If you want something different and new with some mystery mix this might be for you.
- LoeksnokesRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0Meant as a writing exercise with many short punchy chapters, The Path succeeds at hitting it's target.
For me personally, I like a story where I come to understand and care for the characters. Here I appreciate the MC is worth caring about, but as the story is written at an emotional remove, it is more just straight action.
As a second point, I prefer longer/fuller chapters, but I at least knew ahead of time that this story was not to be formatted that way.
So an enjoyable read, but the higher points will be delivered in external struggle.
