Description
[New chapters on Fridays only for the next couple months as I begin work on a new (non-RR) project and participate in NaNoWriMo. If I have time, I might still push out the occasional Monday chapter.]
Adam is in despair; he has lived through the apocalypse and watched everyone he loves die, and even though he knows it's over anddespite the superpowers he possesses, the otherworldly force that's conquered the planet has won, he refuses to stop fighting.
But when an old enemy comes to him and presents him with an offer to help—and an ambitious, if preposterous, plan—he sees an opportunity to set things right. The plan: to send his mind back in time to before the end; before the Abominations, before the powers, before he was anything but an unmotivated, aimless college student.
Now, along with his friends and teammates, he'll have to navigate a world that's rapidly approaching its end, and hope his memories of what led to the apocalypse come back in time to stop it from happening again.

You should go into this story expecting many POV characters with interconnected stories. Generally the story all flows in one direction, with occasional detours where we see the same events or period of time from a different person/group of people before catching back up with the main storyline. This means it can be weeks or even months between your favorite character's POV chapters.
If that's not your thing, I understand completely.

NOT a Lit-RPG. NOT progression fantasy. Hopefully decent?

- terrapinRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Despite the story’s title, it has a lot more going on than just a time loop. There’s superpowers, alien invasions, and romance, and the story is just getting started.
Since it’s the early days, it’s hard to say too much about plot or characters yet since there hasn’t been much time to develop them. Furthermore, the time loop that starts after chapter ten (or ‘X,’ I suppose) causes memory loss for the looper, so in many ways the characters and plot have only been around for two chapters as of this review. However, I’ve been impressed by the grammar, style, and setting of the story, which hopefully won’t change all that much as the story progresses.
The first ten chapters feel appropriately epic and despairing as the apocalyptic stakes are established.
The fight scenes are interesting and the setting and superpowers are imaginative—in particular, one person’s power revolves around being supernaturally forgettable, and this was written really well from a first-person perspective, both convincingly describing the protagonist’s disoriented experience while also conveying enough information to the reader that they can follow what’s going on.
The latest chapter was the first POV shift and I found myself somewhat less impressed with the quality of the writing. I find this slightly concerning, but it also may be that the author is intentionally going for a different, less descriptive style for this character.
I have high hopes for the story going forward—the author is technically skilled, has created an interesting world, and started enough plot threads in motion to keep me anticipating what will happen next without being overwhelming. - Builder BobRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5This isn't the kind of story I normally come to RR for, or read in general as I tend more towards Tolkien style fantasy or SciFi but I've enjoyed it nonetheless.
The story is done via multiple POVs/protagonists, which isn't really my favorite style and the main reason for the docked points there. That's not to say it is done poorly, I'm simply not a qualified judge here as I think the last time I read something similarly done was A Song of Ice and Fire back in 2008.
Similar to Ice & Fire, the story is darker, more realistic (ignoring super powers obviously), and much more character driven. Benefit of the shifting POVs is better ability to flesh out the world and individual characters and the author does their best to take advantage of that, with more focus on the characters than the world itself. To be clear, this means there are likely to be several characters you don't like, not because they are bad, but because like real people they just have frustrating personalities. Thankfully, unlike George Martin, AMMMWrites hasn't started killing off all my favorite characters, but the story's tone certainly doesn't suggest that isn't a possibility. In general I'd say it tends closer to "PG 13" than "R", in that a number of dark or disturbing things are alluded to but the actual dirty details are glossed over, at least so far.
As for grammar I've got no complaints, nothing glaring enough for me to feel compelled to write a "suggestion" for at least.
Finally, a warning for anyone drawn to this story like me because of the time looping aspect of it. This is not a MC goes back in time with a concrete plan and an absolutely unrealistic ability to recall precise information about events from years prior kind of story. This is a MC flung back in time as a last ditch Hail Mary, waking up thinking they'd just had an important dream and getting weird instances of deja vu as their memory slowly comes back kind of story.
All in all I am enjoying the story, and recommend it to anyone l - Slow_NeptuneRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5My time with this story so far has been very enjoyable. The way the author gets you hooked on each character is done masterfully. Along with many hints into why the world is the way it is now I'm definitely in for the ride.
Style: The style in this story lends itself to the characters first and foremost. The author weaves character thoughts and events together well enough to keep the pacing speedy and not miss out on character depth. Occasionally the characters will go into an internal monologue. For other stories, I think this can bring the pacing to a halt, but the author does it in such a natural way that it feels like you're reading through a brisk conversation.
Story: The beginning of this story sets up many plot threads and mysteries that pull me along. Each character such as Tomas, Adam, Christine, and Lakshmi has a past with one another. The author doesn't get bogged down in exposition but instead slowly hints at each past through how the characters interact with one another. The only criticism I have for the story is the pace changes dramatically once the prologue finishes. This could be off-putting for some readers but it didn't completely dissuade me from continuing to read.
Grammar: There is not much to touch on regarding grammar for this story. Overall the author has a strong grasp on grammar issues and only occasionally slips into run-on sentences.
Character: So far the characters have been the strongest part of this story. Each conversation they have is filled with history and personality, making it a joy to read through any conversation, even in the slower parts. Each character has a distinct voice, especially Tomas. This is so important for a multi-POV story, and I'm glad the author nailed it.
Overall The Loop is an engaging read with strong likable characters, a distinct and confident style, an intriguing story, and little grammar issues to speak of. - TheNormanRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0The story itself has promise, but the format of jumping between the 5? 'main' characters makes it hard to keep track of where the story is. if one ended and the next started right after it would make it easier, but still a little jarring. As the story is at the time I'm writing this, I spent too much time each perspective shift just trying to figure out when/where I was 'viewing' the story from.
Other than that mostly minor complaint, the story itself looks good and I'm looking forward to reading more as more gets posted. - MozgovedRoyal Road★★ 2.0The short prologue story is an awesome example of a sci-fi mystic horror, full of great characters and pacing.
When the story starts in earnest it devolves into a poorly written mishmash of characters POV filled with unnecessary observations, emotions of teenage girls not connected with the main plot at all, sequences of events not making any sense at all. And of course no mention of the time loop magic promised in the title of the book and no hints of whether it will be there at all.
All in all the book becomes unreadable after the prologue and I advise droping it there. The prologue is really good though, I recommend reading it for a short action packed horror story all right.
