Description

Who was Mara? When he first met her, Jackle hadn’t the faintest idea how to answer such question. Now? As the Ring Finger of her royal Black Hand? Well, he’d be likely say that his Duchess was a benevolent and curious ruler. What he wouldn’t though, is that her very existence horrified him.

It wasn’t the fact that she’d sold their world of magic to machines, or that her end goal was the destruction of that very same world, but ratherwhyshe would do those things. He was the only one in their group who knew, and it ate at him every day, but heunderstood.

For now though, they searched for the remaining Obelisks- Which is why he was currently trudging through knee-deep snow up a craggy mountainside. Each member of the Black Hand had their strengths, and his just happened to be an ideal match for psychotic artificial intelligences from beyond their world.

This is a solid foundation and I am exited to see where Sera will take this story.
My biggest qualm with the predecessor to this book was the scattered focus, but LOSOS already looks much more structured.
In addition, the characters we have seen are made with apparent care so it will be interesting to see how they evolve with the story.

Disclaimer: I have access to future chapters (time travel).
If you've read OSOS and liked it you'll also like LOSOS. There are a lot of references and the story basically takes place in the same "universe" as OSOS, but the story itself is a quite different. Without much spoilers, it takes universal mysteries, beats them up with a rusty pipe, and makes them work in the mines.
While probably too early to say, I think it will be a hit in the science v. magic niche.

I'm really enjoying the blend of cosmic stakes and thought-provoking metaphysical questions in this story. It strikes a great balance between exploring universal, grand-scale concepts and weaving in grounded, personal moments that make the narrative feel relatable. The mix of epic themes and intimate character dynamics keeps me intrigued and engaged so far.

I like this story, and especially that we got Mara back more or less as she was.
This time it seems to be very well structured and having a more "normal" narrative structure, which is probably for the better. The story starts far later in the narrative's timeline compared to the first draft, which helps better establish the setting to the reader.
I once again really enjoy the characters, tho i am missing the "Mara experimenting POV" which was the thing i most enjoyed about the old version of this story, but there just hasn't been the opportunity for this,  maybe this will come in time.
So far it's not yet much, but very promising, i can't wait to see more of this.
Unfortunately the story has already gone back into Hiatus as of writing this, but i have hope that it's not permanent.
