I’ve read the entire book but this Review will contain no spoilers outside of what can be gained from the blurb.
The premise of the story is steeped in the familiar: a young hero from our world is whisked away to a Fantasy realm where he will need to face the shadowy forces of an evil Sorceress (Witch) and her attempt to reclaim power. But the author offers a unique take that will remind readers, during certain moments, of Ghibli films. I would say this story is made for fans of classic YA Fantasy, Ghibli Films and the video game Ni no Kuni.
As for pacing, this story is a definite SLOW burn. Which is great of fans of slow burn stories like myself. But expect to spend several chapters in the ordinary world before the Isekai adventure really starts. It’s intentional and lays some groundwork for the protagonist and his motivations.
Once our hero has been Isekai’d, you quickly realize that the world has been living and breathing separate from Joseph this entire time. It’s full of people with their own problems, and their own plots. Some of which may be counter to the protagonist, or the antagonist. Or both. It adds a nice layer of complexity.
I recommend checking it out and sticking around, as some of the payoffs and momentum really happen later in Book 1, after the groundwork has been laid. And they are oh, so satisfying. I know I’m biased here, so you’ll need to read it for yourself.
