- Caramel SauceRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5The author introduces us to a superhuman figure devoid of moral absolutes; he is certainly not evil, yet his actions are driven by selfish motives. Although my familiarity with the Marvel Universe is cursory, and some characters that make appearances elude me, I find it intriguing how the author chose to interact with the most renowned heroes, thereby creating space for others to evolve.
A particularly commendable aspect, in my view, is that this demonstrates the author's writing for both an audience and himself. This sentiment is palpable in the comments appended to each chapter and the evident diligence poured into rectifying errors.
If I were to offer critique, it would pertain to the change of Spider-Man's name to Black Tarantula. It's not that I hold any disdain for the new name, but it does appear incongruent with the overarching title of the novel.
Regarding the characters, I think it would be interesting to grant Hydro Man more prominence, allowing him to embark on a journey of growth parallel to our protagonist's. There will always be time for him to confront big shots, but the moment to measure himself against other newcomers is now. I also believe that it could serve better to showcase the values or lack thereof of Spider-Man/Black Tarantula in these confrontations. For instance, observing whether he assists the hero at any point or leaves him to his own, whether they need to join forces or something similar. - DuskArcanistRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Pacing of the story is quite good and it flows very smoothly.
The characters introduced thus far (Chapter 6) are quite interesting and descriptions of them leave me visualizing quite vividly who they are, physically at least.
I like the way the author mixes in dialogue and descriptions, this is a very important detail for me as I can't really read novels that don't do enough of each. I need to be immersed in the scene and so far the scenes have been immersive.
There is some content dump that could be more organically brought into the story, such as information pertaining to the Golden Age. This could be improved a little bit by feeding us little chunks of information throughout the chapters or instead even having just a T.V. advert running that explains this (something along these lines).
Another great thing used here is italics to show inner dialogue (I don't know why more authors on this site do this, it's really easy on the eyes, trust me).
Overall I would say this is a good read. - k.cRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5I don't have too much experience in the Marvel Universe (other than your occasional Marvel movie) but I believe the author does a great job in paying homage to Spider-Man while adding their own twist.
Style: Pacing is good, and MC is introduced right off the bat. As a reader, I never feel that I'm missing information or need to re-read. Side note- the font this author uses is so nice on the eyes. Narration is solid as well and the whole story flows.
Story: This author does a good job of supplementing the reader through showing vs telling. The fight scenes in particular are very well written, and I think is this writer's strong suit, and am pleased at how action-packed the story is. There are multiple characters that are introduced right off the bat that I need adjusting to (i.e remembering their names and relationship to MC) but that might be a me problem.
Grammer: Pretty straightforward, and little to no grammatical errors. I saw here and there some spacing inconsistencies, but nothing to deter the reader from continuing to read.
Character: The characters shine in the series, and I appreciate the banter between them (some of the jokes actually made me laugh out loud). As mentioned above, a little hard to keep track of at times, but the most important characters are always at the forefront. - hecallsmehischildRoyal Road★★★★ 3.5Style: I’m torn on the style choice. Early on, I found out this story is written to evoke the feeling of reading a comic book. I’ve seen all the Spiderman movies but I don’t read comics, so I am not the best person to judge that style. From a standard fanfiction or novel-writing angle, the story could use more fleshing out in describing senses and settings and emotions. However, I can also see how the writer is trying to balance that with portraying a medium that relies far more on dialogue and action. My personal preference is for more description, but given that the writer was aiming for a style evocative of comics and I can reasonably follow that attempt, let’s call that 4.5 stars
Story: The story has a fascinating core concept which is, what if Spiderman’s powers are granted to a petty thief? It’s a great twist from the start with a whole lot of potential. The story is heavy on action, which works well for the comic book/superhero genre. 4 stars
Grammar: Generally the story reads well in the grammar department. One weakness I see is a proclivity to join sentences with a comma when it would work better to put a period there and make two sentences. I also see occasional misspellings or misuses of a similar-sounding word (instead of the correct word). However it is very readable, has a decent flow, and the errors are not unbearably frequent. 4 stars.
Character: Scott makes an interesting Spiderman. His stakes and desires are laid out clearly and he chases them even when he gets knocked around for it. I have more trouble pinning down Adrian’s motivations, as he gets attached to new proteges really quickly for someone living a criminal life. Felicia... doesn't always react in a way I find believable. Many of the characters are a little bit of a background blur to me. I am having some trouble attaching to the characters beyond Scott, or believing their attachments to each other. People in the criminal world are bonding and trusting each other pretty fast and deep, whi
