The Homesteader's Rise [A Litrpg Crafter's Tale]
Community Rating
Description
Henry Ballard was tired of playing as a mage in MMORPG games. He was tired of the constant battling. He knew the best dungeon conquering strategies, how to complete legendary quests, and most battle techniques. At some point killing a larger more powerful mob just becomes another mob.
When Buena Vista announced their new MMORPG was a Fully Immersive Virtual Reality, he decided this was his chance to try something new. He decided this was his opportunity to learn a non-combat skill tree.
Unlike in the past, he decided he would take his time to level. Whenever new games came out, his friends and guildmates would power level. This time he wanted to take life slow.
Follow him as he explores crafting and town-building.

- FalconbexRoyal Road★★★★ 3.5The story is interesting for the genre but the system and economy needs some work.
I.e Skill points are provided at level ups but never used.
The real life to game economy makes no sense and even within the game there seems to be inconsistent pricing for materials, hiring costs etc.
All in all it kept my attention, but could use editing and spell checking. - LBaroRoyal Road★★★★ 3.5I like this story. The pacing is great in my opinion and the general set up of the story is something I like. I haven't read a story with a carpenter protagonist before, so this is nice. One big problem, however, is the grammar, and especially the spelling. The sentence structure is allright and understandable. However, there are many missing words, wrong words, consistency errors, and similar problems. It is possible to read this story and understand it without too much difficulty, but it really needs some polishing. The readers are often leaving many edit suggestions in the comments. Implementing those suggestions would already improve the readability of this story quite a bit.
That is all I have to say regarding this story. Now I really just need to fill the 200 words minimum, which is honestly a little too long for my taste. 200 words can easily be more than 1500 letters... Well, here is a joke:
"Police arrested two kids yesterday, one was drinking battery acid, the other was eating fireworks. They charged one – and let the other one off."
Was it good? No? Well... Can't please everyone. Now go ahead and read this story instead. It's still good despite the mistakes. - AsspanzyRoyal Road★★★ 3.0First off, the synopsis is accurate and actually describes what the story is all about. If you’re a long-time member of this website (like me), then you know how rare that is (many times the author puts some over-dramatic, flowery stuff in the synopsis, but not here).
Here's what you can expect in a usual chapter; Guy plays a Fully Immersive MMORPG, fantasy video game (like the ones in SAO or Overlord). What he does mostly is learning different crafts (such as carpentry, tanning, smithing, etc.), making items and interacting with NPCs (who act and feel like real people).
Also, what I love about this story is that it’s a Fantasy MMORPG story that’s actually good. Fantasy MMO stories are usually bad, so this novel is a wonderful change of pace.
The world-building is good. It has only one flaw (which is, arguably, very miniscule). I haven't been introduced enough to the magic system to make a good enough judgement on it, but it seems fine.
Edit: Later on, the story gets corrupted by scifi crypto bro nonsense. - FlamingFalconRoyal Road★★★ 3.0Started well enough. The game world was interesting enough, and the way interactions were with the npcs and the initial development was strong.
Then he leaves the city to create the farmstead, and then it quickly goes off the rails. We go from someone wanting a slice of life live on a homestead to it becoming a hamlet and then a village of people. Bit inconsistent with his ideas but ok.
Then we go back to the real world for a bit and here’s where the issues start to arise. How much gold he has randomly feels like it conveniently increases randomly to meet purchases even after spending a fortune. Is able to invest a percentage of a massive consortium that purchased something worth millions of gold for a few hundred. Went for a job with a salary of < 100k when he has 250 million plus in inheritance along with a game earnings in the billion range.
And the way the petty villains have started to act is rather childish when it introduces politics. - The issue not being the introduction of them, but instead how they are implemented and how they are written
-in addition to a rise in typos, missused words and so on
Quite frankly it feels like the story suddenly changed author. With how much the quality dropped, tho it could just be the change in style.
tldr; it started off with potential and well built, but then falls into the pitfalls of other stories in the genre and the inconsistent numbers and strangely written self insert irl chapters make me feel like I’m reading one of those 10k chapter chinese translation stories - Stealbob3Royal Road★★★ 3.0The Story is okay and the spelling and grammar are not the greatest. Doesn't use the same words consistently? Is Thaddeus or Thadeus fighting coyotes or wolves. Is he wielding a sword or an axe. Changes words like that constantly. Make a choice and be consistent.
Also the math seems off. The buildings are wierdly big and small in other places.
Overall a C- work. - destroying paperRoyal Road★★★ 2.5It started of as nice crafting litRPG story but soon lost it nice and enjoyable feeling when real life problems and politics started to be the focus of the story. add to that the story is mainly advertised to be a crafters story with a some town building elements. due to that I found the story becoming less of a fresh and light story turning in a somewhat forced political intrigue story.
As I mainly read crafter/slice of life stories when I relax I couldn't force myself to keep reading it without getting some frustrated, annoyed and disappointed feeling's to rise up.
I hope this review can help you, or anyone else in making the decision whether they would like to read the story. - Cynical JayRoyal Road★★ 2.0Like the title says there is a LOT of forced plot. The beginning is fairly generic, craftsman moves into a town manages to be the first to get a special craftsman class just because of it. Ok so far. The issues begin to arise 30-40 chapters from there when someone convinces MC to sign a contract that could've been detrimental to him.... because the guy promised MC it wasn't.
Then we find out the MC is worth millions of dollars yet he was foolish enough to sign a contract over a mere promise, really? The IRL portion of this story like most VR titles is the worst part and it drags down the rest of the story because those politics, guilds and factions get brought into the game.
So what was a decent crafting/city building game. Turns into some far fetched political intrigue and negotiating novel which feels far to forced.
On top of that the consistent misplaced and misspelled words get jarring. - PunsterSupremeRoyal Road★★ 2.0So first off the grammar is atrocious. There are so many instances of a word just entirely being left out. And one of the earlier chapters he’s fighting coyotes, and one of the coyotes is called a wolf twice for some reason. Not to mention the inconsistence with the plot The MC apparently has a completely unique class, but no one else has, but everyone has heard of. I hate when they do that in stories, because it just doesn’t make sense for a gaming company to create an entire class that is only going to be used by one person. Also, our MC is constantly getting the first world titles, but has only been contacted by a few guild once early on. Chapter 30 you’re getting into politics with no clear resolution. It’s been made clear that the guilds Are mostly in charge and he has spurned them multiple times but doesn’t seem aware that he needs to Forge connections. It’s a book relying on a lot of social connections For the plot, and yet most of the social Aspects of the book fall flat and feel scripted. Problems are easily solved with a conversation And our MC has Butler to solve all his other problems. Like many people I quit at this point where the MC gets pressured into signing a contract thats clearly shady when he doesn’t need money or even to work. It’s fine if he’s working to keep himself in the real world, but if that’s his motivation, there’s no reason for to allow himself to be talked into a job like that.
- Epiic_batkillerRoyal Road★★ 2.0The story started off nice and easy which is exactly what I was looking for but then the large guilds were introduced and the character that i believe to be to guild leader for Hephaestus quite litterally comes to his homestead and tells him to his face in front of a noble you will join us or I will take your land from you. Came completely out of nowhere with how direct it was.
Also like the review title says the author's grammar needs some major work/ proofreading the amount of times I see words that are misspelled or just entirely replaced with an incorrect word is astounding. There is also a few cases where the gender pronouns are flip-flopped from what they should be.
P.S. I never paid any attention to this specific part of the story but i saw some complaints from other readers about the system/leveling math and how it just doesnt add up the way it should, so be on the lookout for that if you care enough.
Note for the author: I have never seen or heard of anybody extending their hand out for a handshake to sealing a deal OVER THE PHONE, if it was in person sure but MC and his (BlackRock) Financial advisor were speaking over the phone when he was trying to buy into the banking conglomerate thing. - SteamrollaRoyal Road★★ 2.0Can't tell you much about the story, I didn't make it past the first chapter. When the author leaves that many editing suggestions sitting there unused, I figure it's not worth trying a story. All I got was it was a typical, drop the player into a game, with both too much exposition, and too little back story...
