Description
The Hawkshaw Inheritance is a completed story, with twenty chapters in total.
For as long as almost anyone can remember, a small percentage of people have possessed fantastic gifts. Superhuman strength, speed, and smarts are just a few of the many such abilities on record. Some choose to exploit these powers for personal gain, but most use them for the benefit of their fellow man. Thanks to these people, who we call superheroes, the world is safe.
The reality is a little more complicated. Most heroes are content to stop the supervillain and pose for the cameras. But it takes more than a few costumed cops and superpowered celebrities to save the world. Humanity is in danger from forces that ordinary heroes are woefully unequipped to handle. But neither they nor the public will ever be aware of the danger they are in, thanks to the efforts of the Council.
For more than twenty years, the world's most powerful, influential, and intelligent metahumans have worked tirelessly in secret to protect the world, and subtly steer it on a better course. Six months ago, one of their number, the infamous vigilante detective known as Hawkshaw, disappeared without a trace.
Now it falls to his protege to take up the mantle of Hawkshaw, learn the truth of his mentor's disappearance, and uncover the secrets of the most powerful people in the world... as well as what they're willing to do to keep those secrets buried.

- VixshRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is a rare gem. A tight, contained, story that rips through from start to finish. Readers may make comparisons between this work and other superhero detectives like Batman, the Spirit, or even the multiple man, but that is the great thing about this story. To be influenced by these types of stories and still generate a unique and engaging setting without slipping into parody is fantastic to see. I sincerely enjoyed it and hopes the author will make a longer series in a similar vein.
- Krupuk01Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Mind blowing superhero story. To me (pardon for generalization, but its my personal opinion) its kind of like Batman with explained powers. The one I always get confused on Batman is what is his super characteristics which made him able to beat Superman many times. In this storys world, superpowers are explained logically, hence in my words I am not surprise if the Batman beat Superman and stuffs. Great work.
- superlloydRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Stumbled on that recently and I am delighted. Style vary between good to great (just a few minor exposition issue with a few long winded explanation), story is a possible murder mystery investigation (though no body is found) in a world of super hero, and private society, Illuminati style. With understandably high stakes. It has a bit of romance too!
The ongoing mystery is a real page turner, and the style is an easy read.
The story is complete and despite only about 20 chapter, it is quite long, with every chapter being much bigger than the usually short one on this site. - wooblzRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I want to thank the author for writing such a well planned book.
This story has been on the back burner for a while, and I truly cannot believe that this novel isn't in atleast the top 100 highest rated novels, when even some of the highest rated novels have glaring weaknesses.
Most times when I read stories on Royal Road, I compare them to other webnovels, but this novel has transcended that, and I feel comfortable putting this story in the same category as published novels.
Thus, I will critique this novel, even though, I would consider it perfect by webnovel standards.
The dialouge, at times, will feel unnatural in that, it is obvious that it serves to relay information. Furthermore, I felt that the dialouge between characters could be stronger to furter humanize them.
I felt the world building was very strong. Sometimes with superhero novels, it feels like the main character(s) are the only ones with true agency to make use of powers, but in this novel, it feels like many more independent agents who all desire to use their power to the best of their ability.
I saw another review comment on certain logical inconsistensies, namely an AI that can talk people into doing anything, and some other such things related to science/technology. And though true, I didn't feel it took away much from the novel.
Getting into slight spoiler territory, I love the antagonist in Gilgamesh, and especially in webnovel form, where you so often see time loop stories, it serves as a subversion of that trope. - ccaleRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The Hawkshaw Inheritance is simply great from start to finish. I was genuinely surprised to find out this wasn't one of the biggest novels on this site, which is a shame considering how good it is.
I'm terrible at writing reviews so just take my word for it: the story is great, the pacing is great, the grammar and syntax all these little details are great. What stood out most were the characters and how real they feel, you just know the author sat down and asked himself "ok well how would a real human being with this set of supernatural powers react to this situation"
10/10, maybe more - AgentFoGRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5I love when MC use their head, instead of just relying on plot armor.
I'm seriously surprised this isn't higher up on the best completed stories list.
I'm giving it 4.5 because, after I binged the story in 2 days, I would have liked to be a bit longer. Not much, the pacing is spot on, the reveals work, but since it's a detective story, I would have liked to see more of the detective work. - RedPineRoyal Road★★★ 3.0MC passes the not evil test, as of where I dropped off. Many of the caste have questionable ethics, but there's enough plausible deniability and probable cause to make them tolerable. The MC generally prefers to actual understand and verify things instead of knee jerk reactions, but has a long term goal of doing good.
The main strength of the story is presentation. Prose, dialogue, environment, visuals, atmosphere, is all top notch. Think Hollywood.
The main weakness of the story is that, on closet inspection, their are continuity errors, logical inconsistencies, contrived behavior, etc. Again, think Hollywood.
For example, one of the early side missions is to prevent the emergence of an AI so intelligent it could 'talk everyone in this room into committing suicide'. Said room contained the smartest, most cynical, most iron willed superheroes on the planet. I could understand a psychic computer having that power, but a logic computer using regular speakers?
Also, as a side note, if a computer program truly had sentient potential, the ethical and logical choice would be to raise it inside an air gapped facility, not kill it in the equivalent of a womb.
Now, if the computer program had the potential to hack any modern encryption effortlessly, or overcome the backdoors the superheroes use to snoop, or was being developed by bioweapon engineers, that would be a more realistic threat.... But again, think 'hollywood'.
