- IanFlatRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I love the first paragraph of the synopsis. Obviously I need to know what happend to LRR after the wolf!
The domestic moments with Momma are strong, and orient the reader to a loving family life before the mention of watching for criminals. Which comes v. early, and makes clear what this story is about, at least at the beginning--and which is followed immediately by the comment about the sister's illness. So the character is loved and loving, driven to care of her sister: completely sympathetic, and that's even before I recall that she must've lost her Grandmother quite bloodily to a big bad wolf.
Then of course there's a huge bonded wolf--very Assassin's Apprentice. (Which is, obviously, a very good thing!)
Introducing the city more via smells than any other sense is a smart (given the wolf-bond) and effective choice. The introduction of the competition for the Prince Protector is a -little- heavy-handed, but also sort of reassuring in that I have a sense of where this is going, and that it sounds like fun. And given how fun the first chapter is, I'm sure it follows through on that promise. - DreameroftheUnknownRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Honestly, I really love fairy tales. They have this unique sense to them that I've never seen matched anywhere else, which may be in part due to time, but I think it's more than that. This story almost perfectly captures that very same feeling, as well as any author possibly could. It's a delicate balance between following the source material and making your own story, and this author has done a stupendous job at this.
Style: 5/5, easy. The words and sentences flow so easily. Granted, there are some words that I didn't know, but the author incorporated them seamlessly into the story so that I could figure out what they meant simply by looking at the context. There is a substantial amount of exposition and talk, but it never feels like a drag thanks to the masterful prose of the author that feels professinal. The dialogue is nice as well!
Grammar: 5/5. This is always the area where I have the least to talk about, and this time, it's no exception. Everything from the style counts for this, and there were no spelling, grammar, or punctuation mistakes. The tenses were very consistent as well.
Story: The world building in this story is one of the best I've seen on RR, top notch for sure. It takes the already known world of Red Riding Hood and cranks it up to a thousand while maintaining the same core values. There's a sense of mystery lurking around, and the author has done a wonderful job of making it clear that this story takes place after the events of the fairy tale. The setting is so descriptive that I feel like I'm standing there, so even though it switches, each one is memorable.
Character: A very strong point to this story, the interaction between Aria and Ran is the best by far. You can feel their love and trust in one another, and my god, it helps the story a lot. From the beginning, you know what kind of person Aria is (sweet, determined), and it helps affirm the story. I really sympathize with a lot of the characters, and I feel like that's an very important - ThorgalRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0As someone who adores fairy tales, myths, and all things related. I am always interested in what people pull off using these classic stories as a foundation.
And I am pleasantly surprised. The story is great, the characters are interesting, and I am curious about where it's heading.
The story takes place after the known classic of Red Riding Hood. The classic story also exists in this world but is a false interpretation of events that went to live its own life. Now, Aria and Ran (the girl and the wolf) teamed up and go on different adventures together.
Style: Written in first person present tense. The word choice itself conveys plenty of personality, especially in dialogue and when describing things. While the story is heavier in prose, this certainly adds to the story, the city feels alive like it's a character on its own.
Grammar: complete marks, it's obvious the author takes great care of the story and still goes back for revisions.
Character: Now to the meat of the review, Red Riding Hood and The Wolf are absolutely intriguing. You have exceeded my expectations, their relationship is lovely and I can't wait to find out more.
Overall: If you love fairy tales and classic stories, do check this one out! - BullerRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0But RR refused to let me do that so you won't get to know my reaction visually. Suffer.
Anyway. The story seems pretty good. I've never actually read the little red ridinghood but I hear it was pretty good. Even without knowing the initial context, the author takes an whole new twist on the thing and brings out details I really can't trust were originally present in the story. Wait... is this fanfiction?
Grammar and style are good overall. Characters are fine as well. 5/5 - James_KnightRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0An enjoyable read so far. I binged through the first 20 or so chapters before I caught up to the posting schedule, and ever since then am always glad to see a new chapter release. I definitely recommend giving the story a shot. Aria and Ran are such a fun duo to cheer for.
For style, I've been quite pleased with how the story has been told. I haven't noticed any real exposition dumps, and we are shown the world and history as needed without excessive backstory that isn't relevant. And the pacing and general flow seems quite good as well.
For the story, we see a young girl trying to protect her family and live up to the image she has of her father, while not breaking down to the stress of it all. As we follow her along, we get to see her struggles, triumphs, and failures. We see her grow through it as she is able to come to ask others for help and work on overcoming her prejudices.
The other characters in the story also feel authentic, with their own motivations, feelings, and stories, even if we mostly only see them through the mcs' eyes
The grammar is quite good, and I haven't noticed any real issues other than an occasional misspelling, but all in all, it flows quite well and doesn't have the choppy, forced feel so many web novels have. - S.N. KeirsteadRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Style: The author masterfully uses the first person POV to perfectly capture the main character's personality. The narration is filled with personality that make this version of Little Red Riding Hood feel like her own character. The author also makes sure to keep everything brief and to the point but still gives enough detail to make the world feel alive.
Grammar: Pretty much perfect. From what I've read, I noticed no major grammatical errors. Nothing made reread a passage to try and figure out what the author meant. Perfect score in this area.
Story: Essentially a sequel to the classic fairy tale, The Guardian breathes new life into both the characters and the world. The story is even more fantastical than the original, making the world feel unique among the plethora of other takes on the world and characters. You will see characters and references from the original tale, as well as other cameos from other famous stories.
Characters: Red is memorable. She's got that "good girl" personality/moral compass going on, making her very likable. At the same time, her narration makes her come across as charismatic with a pinch of humor. Her companion wolf, Ran, is as loyal and playful as one would expect a wolf to be. The two have a fantastic chemistry together, really cementing the "man's best friend" theme.
The Guardian is an engaging and unique take on a timeless story. Definite recommend for anyone that's a fan of classic stories being updated. - FlagraRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0Wonderful take on the tale of red riding hood. The characters and world are rich and bing you in easily. The author brings in lore and information fairly naturaly leaving you wanting more. Unique use of the story and magic. Love the world and well thought out story that is supported by a fairly well rounded and realistic female lead.
The only things I have against the story and writing are the use of words and verbage that take away from the medival feel such as "mobster" ect. I think there could be better desciptions that keep it with more of the old english vibe the author was going for. Some spelling and grammer mistakes with occasional inconsitincies that need smoothing out.
The main character uses lines like: "don't ask me how I know" a little too much at the beginging but evens out later. Story wise some fixes needed for the timeline in regards to realisim for people recovering from lack of food and general change in appearance in a short time. Main lead and family repeatdly described as being thin but then showing rapid growth spurts from less than a month and recovery and filling out after a coupld weeks of better food even with healing and streanous activity. Not huge but might help overall quality.
Overall I loved the writing style, story, world building, and look forward to more from this author.
