A nice departure from litrpg on this site.  Author clearly knows his medieval battle jargon.  The battle scenes are exciting and I've only had to google about half the terms.  But now I know my armor from my elbow. Excited to see where this goes. I hope the author sticks with it.

I had trouble putting this down the entire way through once I started. The story had a great pace with ebbs and flows between tournament/battlefield combat and time looking at the day-to-day life for a young aspiring knight.
If were to pick a word to describe this work on the whole, I would have to say that it is one of the most Genuine among the genre that I have read - Tiffen clearly knows their stuff when it comes to the period combat and every scene feels authentic and realistic. Beyond that, the depictions of Edward and his various relationships with mentors, peers, and  juniors throughout the story is very well done and I found myself all-in when reading about each of those connections.
If you’re keen on a well depicted late Middle Ages story with a strong chivalric undertone and a (very) light brush on the magic, this is definitely for you. Cannot wait for more!

This was not the kind of story I usually look for on this site. However, I found this story to be very entertaining. A fantasy world but very connected to our own late medieval period. The style reminded me of The White Company by Arthur Conan Doyle. I really hope the author carries on.

I am thoroughly enjoying this story, really enjoy the style of writing, very detailed and sets a great scene. Edward feels like a real person, and I think the fight scenes are well written in my (uneducated) opinion of these kinds of battles
Can't wait for what else is to come.

Anyone you enjoys medieval history will enjoy this greatly. I can name many things that are good with the story such as the characters behavior in line with thier social positions but also having thier own character rather than just being a stereotype, the subtle politics going in the background that influences the decisions, but best of all THE BLOODY ARMOUR WORKS LIKE A PROPER ARMOUR, the armour is not cardboard, nor does it behaves like a invincible shield, the user feels the attack even if they are not injured and it needs repairs.
The characters have sword techniques that are not simply clashing swords, they use thier sword as lever at times and even grapple.
Also the little details regarding wearing a smith's mark, and the different levels they have like journeyman, adds life to the whole world.
If you ever played kingdom come deliverance, you will definitely love this. The author knows his stuff and the story is paced well enough that you will get enough details to not feel lost but there is always something new being introduced that you won't get bored but it has substance and now new for just new's sake. I have given 4.5 stars to few things as the story isn't that far ahead that I could judge it that well, but I like what I have read till now and can't wait to read some more.

I like this story for the realistic portrayal of society in a setting akin to medieval Europe, but with certain magical elements included. The warfare is realistic, and it is shown to be the chaotic and messy thing that it is. The romanticization of knighthood is very much not to my taste, but it is understandable that someone like Edward, our protagonist, would believe in it.
But there are problems. One is that I never felt any tension regarding Edward's fate, primarily because we already know due to the prologue that he ends up having kids, grandkids and living up to the ripe old age, at least ripe old in medievalland, of 65. A story being a recounting of the protagonist in his old age is nothing new, but the resulting story needs to account for the lessened tension in some way. At the moment, most of the chapters deal with the ongoing war, and it reads more as a story of "this happened and that happened and this happened". There isn't much to keep my attention or make me care about the war and want to keep reading it. If there is one thing, it is the fact that the protagonist has magic and needs to keep it a secret so that he isn't forced into the magic order of the emperor. Him dealing with the magic order, and imperial court politics, would be interesting, but we haven't gotten to that, so I'm not taking that into account for this review.
Beyond that, this story could really do with some editing. The writing needs some work.

Smashed out this story all the way to chapter 19, created an account so I could annoy people with my thoughts on it.
Very much enjoying the story so far, please keep at it!
Trying to avoid spoilers, but chapter 19 brings out some emotions and stuff, not sure how I feel about that tbh.
    Only 4.5 / 5 because it's not finished yet.
