Description
The Arcane Mercenary: Ghost of the Wastes The Wastes do not create heroes. They create survivors. Cale Arcanus vanished ten years ago when a transport was lost beyond the borders of civilization. Presumed dead, his name became a footnote in a tragedy the Dominion preferred to forget. But the Wastes did not kill him. They forged him. In a land where mana turns feral, monsters replace law, and mercy gets you buried, Cale survived by becoming something the world never meant to face again. He learned older methods of power. Methods that do not fit neatly into cores, rankings, or institutions. Methods that work. Now he has returned. Arclight Academy wants to classify him. Noble houses want to control him. Military and political powers want to decide whether he is an asset… or a threat. They are already too late. Behind a quiet demeanor and a worn mask, Cale walks back into a world that no longer recognizes him—and one that will soon learn what it means to provoke something forged outside its rules. When those he cares about are threatened, he does not debate, scheme, or climb the social ladder. He acts....and the WORLD trembles in turn... Ghost of the Wastesis an urban fantasy progression epic featuring an overwhelmingly powerful protagonist, academy intrigue, dangerous romance, and brutal, high-stakes battles. Expect calm dominance, escalating political consequences, and a lead who knows exactly how dangerous he is—and chooses carefully when to remind the world.

Thank you for this so much! Can't wait to see where this goes from here. Absolutely riveting of a novel thus far.
- BlackRose.FMRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0It was a really nice surprise for me.
I thought to myself, let's see what the story is like.
And what can I say, before I even knew how, I was completely immersed in the story.
However, yes it's true that there are a lot of POV changes, at least in the first main part.
That's not a problem for me; I really appreciate multiple perspectives in a story, as long as they don't distort the story or drag it out unnecessarily. Which is not the case here.
But for hardcore fans of the single POV faction, this is obviously still a problem.
In my opinion, however, the story is exciting and not too long-winded.
I suspect that the super slow-burn fans, who finally finished the first day after 20 chapters, won't be entirely happy either.
And, as with so many stories that have made it into Raising Stars, the incomprehensible hate comments and ratings are already in full force. I've seen this with so many stories here.
Envy and resentment are truly two extremely ugly character traits.
In any case, I'm looking forward to the rest of the story and the next chapters!
From my side, a clear recommendation. - Shane28Royal Road★★★★★ 4.5Ghost of the Wastesis a strong and engaging novel. The story features a unique overpowered main character who stands out from the start. The writing style feels different but works well. There are many POVs, yet the flow stays smooth. The action scenes are intense with great buildup. It is never boring and very binge worthy. There are minor editing errors, but nothing major. Arcanus will overcome every challenge and survive.
- tynxRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0This story is basically the plot of the manhwa Mercenary Enrollment with the addition of magic. Author claims in a chapter 1 comment that they've never heard of it, but the premise and sequence of events is almost exactly the same with small alterations (and a neat magic system added). As for the quality of the story itself, as many other reviewers have commented on, the constant PoV shifts is frustrating. I get what the author was going for, seeing other perspectives on how badass the MC is and all. Its just way overdone to the point where you barely even see the story from the MCs perspective. The story is what it is. OP MC, power fantasy, wish fullfillment, face slapping, aura farming, etc, etc. Junk food for the brain if you will. If you can enjoy that kind of thing then its worth checking out. The writing isn't atrocious, and the magic system is pretty interesting. 4 stars from me.For reference this is what happens in the early chapters of the Mercenary Enrollment manhwa:-American soldiers are rescued by a single badass mercenary, who they find out is a teenager-Teenager returns home to his little sister and grandpa in Korea after recovering some memories-You find out the MC was lost in a plane crash over africa as a child, parents died, he lost his memories, and then became a child soldier who grows into a dangerous merc over 10 years-MC goes to school where his sister attends-MC is super handsome and attracts attention-MCs sister is being bullied by a girl, who has an older brother who is the head school bully-Finds out, beats up the bully older brother (plus everyone else who gets in his way)-Sibling bullies have a corrupt government official father-Bully hires a ganster to beat up MC, who then proceeds to lose to MC-Gangster reports that they messed with the wrong person-MC proceeds to go to government officials house, beat up all his guards, then blackmail his family with proof of his corruption.I could go on, but yeah, its basically the same exact s
- TheEarlofBronzeRoyal Road★★★★ 3.5This story isn't "bad" per se. But it is little more than an edgy teen power fantasy. If you enjoy self-inserting into school but instead of 'you', you're now both the hottest human alive and the most powerful human alive, then you'll enjoy this story. If you got somewhat bored of these sorts of stories/imaginings when you were like, sixteen, then this story may not be what you're looking for.
- Sam9018Royal Road★★★★ 3.5Story is enjoyable and will be a good time filler for people that enjoy a opmc story. Although it does jump in between character povs most chapters.
Main reason I can give this a higher rating is that this is most likely either AI assisted or fully AI written. In chapter 14 alone there were 21 separate uses of the em-dash --. That is usually an indicator of at least some AI use. You will see them from time to time in someone's writing but 21 in a single chapter is an insane amount to be used and to me throws some red flags.
With the changing povs between chapters they seem to overlap. So we will see a chapter through Cales pov and then switch to someone else to see the exact same event happen through someone else's pov. Giving almost the exact same info just with some throw away thoughts from someone else.
There are also alot of inconsistent time frames. In one chapter Cale spent 14 years in the lower planes and then two chapters later he only survived alone for 10 years. So either inconsistent world building or AI is forgetting how long things lasted between chapters.
But i will say this the author clearly cares about this story and is inverting their time into the community. They are in the comments section of ever chapter engaging with their readers. Over time I hope to see the quality of story increase and will edit this review when it happens.
- NizzreRoyal Road★★★ 3.0Writing is ok, but pacing is nonsensical because it keeps jumping between so many characters POV. An actual chore to read due to that. Reader cannot even get settled into a character before we are switching again to some other side-character for a chapter or two for THEIR view of an event, rather than the most important view which is the individuals actually IN the events.
At least it isn't obviously AI-slop, like so many other stories that are just copy-paste straight from some GPT window. It's Authors story, but my advice, cut down the POV switching by 50%. Seriously, half of if it has no reason to exist, it adds nothing to the story, actually taking AWAY from its enjoyability. To be clear, i am away the story is multiple main characters, but this goes beyond that tag. - darkseraphRoyal Road★★★ 3.0I like the world and the story so far, but I can’t help but feel that the writing style is VERY similar to what I’m familiar with for AI writing and writing style habits. This writing style is in all of this authors stories, which are all interesting to me plot wise and world building wise, but difficult to read without me reading something every few paragraphs that makes me think “wow I’ve seen this exact type of pacing and phrasing in so many storytelling AI chats I’ve had” and feel fatigued.Edit: I really tried to keep reading. I just can’t. The AI writing style is just too obvious to me. I can’t do it. It’s getting too painful to see the same pattern of how things are described over and over again. It’s the narration that suffers.
- mockeryjonesRoyal Road★★★ 3.0Every author has a voice, but this authorial voice is overly robotic. The story has decent pacing and the story beats are on point. The prose however, is a problem. It reads like a series of prompt results strung together rather than a single body of work. I'll keep reading if only to see how the prose evolves over time.
