The Fool's Freedom

Description
This is a slow-burn story, and things take a while to pick up. It is also darker than some might like and involves heavy themes such as manipulation and vivid descriptions of gore. You've been warned.
Schedule: 3 Chapters per week on Friday - Sunday - Tuesday.
What would you do if everything you have ever known is gone, and you can reshape yourself into something... more? Lots of mistakes, that's what.
Alan has a body he cannot depend on, few friends, and a desire to be left alone. He is bitter and disappointed in the world, until an elevator ride changes everything, and his past life becomes a distant, long-gone dream. Only ruins remain of civilization as he knew it as the omnipotent System has taken over existence and fate. What path will he take? Will he embrace the shadows, give up his humanity, serve a higher power, or fight the machinations of fate and Gods? All he wants is to be free to live as he wishes. But freedom has a price.
A bunch of dead or dying worlds mashed together as if they were simple clay by an almighty System. Every corner of the new world hides power and opportunities, mysteries and beauty. But not every danger is to be avoided, nor every treasure is to be taken.

- lordozoneRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I'm surprised this hasn't blown up by now. I've read so much on this site, and this has the quality of a series which should have a lot bigger following. Not the most original starting premise (of course we are reading this for a reason), but well executed, with an interesting main cast. If you like litrpg and progression fantasy I would give this a read.
- DabossUnberogenRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I liked this story for a few reasons, and it deserves a lot more attention that ti has been getting. LitRPGs are very easy to write, but are very hard to write well. it can be easy to just create an endless progression vehicle, and simply use the little blue boxes as a way to stimulate your readers. luckily, this book is not like that.
The style was basic but clear, and it was easy to understand. The paragraphs were well separated, and the LitRPG stuff blended well with the storyline. There were some moments where it was a bit sticky, but they were not detrimental to the work in general.
The story was well written, and I liked the way that it introduced everything. It took the concept of a person surviving the apocalypse, aided by the System, to new levels with the addition of the main character's many obstacles to progression. it makes any gains that he gets that much more satisfying.
The grammar was sometimes a bit poor, but not often. It was generally good. it could do with a run through of an editing software like Grammerly, or perhaps a once over by eye.
The characters were well constructed, especially the main character. His struggles seem realistic, and his fight to survive feels profound.
All in all, a good read, and one that I recommend. - HumbuggleRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I have read just about all of the system apocalypse stories on this site and beyond and this is one of my favorites. Im always looking forward to see where the story goes. I find the universe that the story takes place In to be particularly interesting there are many mysteries to unravel.
- JonHRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The title makes it seem like I'm overhyping this, but no, legitimately, I really just liked it that much. From the start, The Fool's Freedom sets up a narrative that is exciting, interesting, and actually somewhat horrific. Let me explain.
Here, we start with our typical litRPG premise. Normal guy gets thrown into a very abnormal video-game-esque world. Here, real life is somewhat echoed. Our hero comes into this new world with a disability brought over from his old life. And such begins our adventure.
I'd like to point out something the writer does very well: differentiating and individualizing characters. Early on, some five+ characters are introduced in the span of a few paragraphs. I expected this to be confusing, but no, each character is written in a way that doesn't rely on bland archetypes to reinforce. Each of them is an individual, and though we don't zoom in to their inner thoughts by any means, they're enough of a whole-person that they seem real to the reader. Which is what we like.
Another point of praise: monster descriptions! Another hint of horror is how the creatures, even low-level creatures, are described. Gross, pustule-filled, and awful to look at. This is all early on. I can't imagine how higher levels will up that feeling of discomfort. Body horror is underutilized, and it's nice to see it used in this story!
There's also a growing sense of intrigue. A certain character has interesting powers that will definitely have consequences for the plot at large, and I plan to keep reading to find out what exactly happens.
As it is, I can't really praise this story enough. Does the writer have room to improve? Of course, we all do! But man. They've got the foundations-- the most important part, The Fool's Freedom is a good story, even when compared to stories outside of its genre. Give it a try, please. You won't regret it. - MohglesterRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I get annoyed with most authors for making the MCs either super OP or really underpowered. This book is like the perfect balance between the two.
What do you mean reviews must be 50 words long??

The narrative strikes a gritty and dark tone, complemented by an engaging monologue capturing the character's struggles. It immerses readers into a universe that feels like a cruel joke, catering to fans seeking a more serious-toned litRPG.
### Style
The writing seamlessly blends darkness and grit, matching the story's tone. Word choices and the mix of exposition and dialogue create an immersive read. The protagonist's inner thoughts deepen the narrative.
### Story
The tale embodies the theme of a universe playing a cruel joke, unfolding a dark story with well-paced progress. It slowly reveals the system, allowing readers to discover details alongside the characters. It delivers on the litRPG and adventure fronts, hinting at intriguing dungeon exploration.
### Grammar
The grammar is consistently high, even in chapters without specific editing notes, surpassing typical standards.
### Character
The protagonist's struggles with a physical ailment bring depth and uniqueness to their journey. Their inner musings add entertainment, while interactions with other characters promise engaging dynamics.
In summary, "The Fool’s Freedom" presents a unique litRPG, blending darkness, character depth, and a deliberate progression. It's an immersive choice for readers seeking a serious-toned litRPG adventure. - Uncreative NameRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0One of the few stories I look forward to weekly chapters from. Characters all have unique voices and presences. Our mc, Alan, is a likable and realistic asshole who compensates for his failing health with sarcasm. Unsurprisingly, he adapts quickly to his new post-apocalyptic circumstances, in true litrpg tradition. Unlike most litrpg apocalypses, however, his longtime health struggles don't immediately disappear with the system's integration. Between this, his personality and his almost manic enthusiasm for battle, he never feels like a premise for self insert.
The writing is concise but descriptive. I've never had difficulty trying to imagine a scene. The pacing never drags on explanation. The grammar is good, the world building has potential, the story is good, read it ❤️ - Worst-answerRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Interesting post apocalyptic litrpg with a male lead with physical issue that he will have to work through.
The system is pretty cool and characters interesting , i'm pretty curious how it will develop.
Honestly i see my review as a formality since the story seem to do pretty good.
i'm actually weirded out that author doesn't have more patreons, might consider lowering the prices ??? chances are that more people will join in. - crowrush204Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Story:
The Fool's Freedom is a story of Alan, who's suddenly transported into a different dimension along with several other people. We're quickly introduced to a system. The system lets the user decide what they want to upgrade and it's quite satisfying to watch him grow stronger, especially when you agree with his choices of skills. I'm liking the fight scenes a lot as well, especially when he teams up with other people later on.
Style:
There are a bunch of internal thoughts. I personally don't mind that much, but it feels kinda off to read third person and then get the main characters' thoughts quite often. Though, it's not super awkward and adds some depth as well. The language is super immersive for the most part, especially in the edited chapters.
Grammar:
There are a couple of comma mistakes, but I doubt most readers pay much attention to that anyway. It's still completely readable.
Characters:
From how far I've read, we've seen Alan and a couple of his friends or people he knows. I think it's great that there's is variety in them. Some of them are absolutely horrified of their situation, while others do their best to continue. All the characters seem realistic so far with their reaction to the sudden change of their lives but don't be afraid to make a character or two truly noteworthy or extraordinary. It's fiction, after all, and not everything has to be super realistic. - HughgentRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0I find this story hard to read.
It's a long story. And the protagonist goes through a lot. So much so that I think you would have to really enjoy seeing a person struggle to like this story.
I cannot stress this enough. The protagonist has a lot of very bad things happen to them. I'm certain they are becoming a stronger person because of it, but perhaps not a better person because of it.
I did read the whole thing, and will continue to read, but do keep this in mind as a person jumping into this blind.
