Description
"No one starts a war—or rather, no one in his senses ought to do so—without first being clear in his mind what he intends to achieve by that war and how he intends to conduct it."- Harold G. Moore
November 22nd, 1963:The eyes of the world turn to the American city of Dallas, Texas, where normality has been forever shattered. An attack the likes of which the world has never seen before has turned the Cold War on its head as the new factor in the silent conflict threatens the balance. The world already teetering on the brink of war, the United States and those that lead it now have to balance a new threat, fantastical in origin, alongside the many others that come with the turbulent era of the 1960s.
Eras collide.
Values clash.
The nature of war remains unchanged.

- SaxifrageRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Even though few chapters have been published, we can already appreciate the immense potential of this story. The chapters are long, the world is coherent for the moment and the path taken by the protagonist is really exciting! For me it's 5 stars although I can't judge the grammar as English is not my native language.
- NeslonRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0A fun concept that's hard to explore, I think it might have been a stroke of genius to take us back a few years so the known interactions of early modern warfare and more primitive armies is already known and recorded. Instead of having to reinvent military doctrine the author just has to spin it and so far he's doing a good job.
- GuardsmanAsianBoiRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This was my first ever GATE fan fic that I've read (way back before the rewrite happened) so I might be a little biased with my review.
The rewrite so far had further improved and expanded on the previous version o this story; the characters are getting more fleshed out, the fights are satisfying to read, and the addition of more political drama on both sides makes me excited for the future of this fic. - Sam Ivan ConcepcionRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Amazing story man, a breath of fresh air compared to most gate fanfics I've read. I also really like the early or I guess mid cold war setting, compared to the usual modern and even futuristic settings. I can't wait for future chapters good luck Mr author man. Cool story
- Obsequium MinarisRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5To begin with: This is a rendition of a fanfic of GATE that the author wrote a number of years ago. This will become abundantly clear within the first few chapters if one isn't already aware of it, but not in a bad way. Indeed, this is close to what GATE should've been from the get-go - a gritty story portraying exactly what happens when, essentially, a military fresh out of fantasy!Rome clashes with a "modern" (1960s) military, with all the violence that prompt entails. Gone is the harem comedy, replaced with Cold War-era warfare.
Where this story really shines is in its portrayal of a premise that many people have wanted to see done correctly ever since the original GATE was first airing. The war scenes are done extremely well. Yes, it's mostly a stomp in favor of the Americans, but honestly, would anyone expect anything different? Even leaving aside the fact that this story is very GATE-influenced, on its face, this is probably the expected result of a clash such as this. Sure, there are instances where the not-Romans are able to mount an offensive and inflict some casualties, but just like in GATE, it's ultimately fleeting and futile on their part. By the end of the second volume, it will likely be abundantly clear to any reader what the end result of this clash will be, unless the author has something up their sleeve that they plan to mix things up with a bit.
That's not to say that what's here is bad, because it isn't - again, the actual scenes of warfare are done well, and this is essentially the expected result, in any case.
Where I'd say the story started to drag a bit was the sheer number of POVs throughout each chapter. By the end of Volume 2, there are a double-digit number of POVs to keep track of. Granted, they're all written uniquely enough that it's not too difficult, but it was a little disappointing, getting attached to a certain POV only for it to last a few paragraphs at most before switching to the next. Personally, I thought the two American so - RedSpottedToadRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0This is a really great GATE inspired story. The actions and conflicts of the characters feel grounded and real. The portreal of two very different armies fighting is very well done. The details of 60s era military technology and tactics are relevant and accurate.
The writing of individual characters and povs is well done, and each character has unique insights and personalities.
However, the number of character povs is daunting. I lost count but there are ~10 reoccurring povs, and more povs used once or twice. This, coupled with sometimes 4-5 different povs in a single chapter make it difficult to read. The 2nd volume really picks up the numbers, and sometimes there are povs as short as a single paragraph. Personally I would prefer a single firefight to be told from one pov, rather than skipping around 2-4.
Having so many characters also makes it more difficult to connect emotionally with them. The 2 'main' characters are young men who just joined the armed forces, and both have interesting stories to be told, but we only get to connect with them in very short bits. The first volume seems to do a better job of letting us connect with the characters.
Overall, a good story. The many character povs make the story feel disjointed at times, and slow down the pacing, having to show the same scene from many angles. But its well worth the read. - Stev0esqueRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0Hey there from NCD! Glad to read this after finishing the original. Being freed from the source material has allowed some of the lazier and/or questionable aspects of Gate to be swept away (still think the names chosen were a result of someone who doesn't know how serious they take anything let alone even themselves) while preserving the emotional core of a story that shows nuance with the time period.
Enjoying the new elements so far and canot wait for more. Keep at it!
