Description

Esra Veyne. Most only know of her as the 'White Ghost', a Duke's Daughter who never even leaves her room. A girl fated to die in obscurity, if only someone didn't reincarnate into her body. The 'new' Esra has no interest in being a ghost. She wants to enjoy her new life. There's just one problem: Everywhere she looks, she finds something that needs fixing, and she can't just let someone else do it. Even if it means breaking fingers to get answers. Even if it means using a traumatized girl as an assassin. Even if it means never getting to enjoy being a Duke's daughter in the first place. Hopefully, she doesn't have to solve every problem with violence. This Esra Veyne was never very good at staying in her room. What to expect: 1: A clever protagonist with blind spots/gets smarter over time.2: A found family that slowly grows over time.3: Decently fast power progression.4: Arcs that focus on action and arcs that focus on more traditional 'otome' tropes.5: A timeskip, likely after Volume 2/3.6: Yuri. (After the timeskip). Chapters come every M/W/F and sometimes Thursday.

Just finished vol 1 of the story. The characters were interesting (though every noble child she met was a version of Veruca Salt). The MC's trauma and transmigration were just so well handled. And that is all set against an amazing plotline with villains, plot hooks, and terrible choices.I hope the author can continue the depth they have shown so far, but even just this book is a satisfying and worthwhile read.As an aside, the book name is just dumb. Not sure what is with the naming schema of books like this, but...bad. This could have had so many better titles.

If this is like, even close to the first story the author has ever written, this is insanely good. I've written and written and tried and tried and I'm no where near developing a full story like this is. It's great. There's no issues in the writing, the characters, or the plot. They're all compelling.
The political drama is cool. The main character is really strong, while still having room for growth in both magical power and political acumen. She's still awesome.
Violet is cool, and the MC's Shield and the girl she orphaned and then rescued (Sere?). I've read so many stories I've forgotten the name of everybody and their mothers.
There's nothing I can point out and say I don't like. I guess personally do not like the magic system. Manipulation of mana is largely physical brawling with the exception of gifts (which I'm not a fan of). The MC's is various senses and emotions and stuff which is neat and has uses, but it's also kind of boring. Magitech is also whatever to me. These things don't matter so much, the actual characters and plot and stuff is fine so it shadows these personal world building issues.

I binged this story over the course of about 6 hours after I found it. It’s incredibly well written, and the author does a great job at keeping the story interesting and engaging. I love the characters and they all feel very distinct. I’m used to finding generic and below average stories on RR and this is definitely not one of them. Bonus points for not using the LitRPG copout for your magic system!

The author admits they started off rough, as this is their first story, and this is reflected in a little awkward composition or consistency in the beginning and the ongoing elephant in the middle of the room which is her complete behavior and competency changing. However this tale is wonderfully imaginative and really fills that niche for slowly pulling back the layers of the onion rather than info dump! I'm really enjoying our heroine's journey and the world building isn't cookie cutter.

There are slop Isekais, and good ones. ‘The Duke's Daughter Sometimes Chooses Violence’ is definitely in the latter category, at least as of chapter 22. This is already one of my favorite stories I’ve found on Royal Road and better than a lot of published books I’ve read.Esra is well drawn and relatable, the secondary characters well fleshed out and interesting. There's just enough backstory and world building to make the story feel alive. It feels like this is the end of the introduction arc and we are about to start on the main plot(s) of the book. Her ‘gift’ is one of the more innovative I’ve read recently; the magic system is unique, and its revelation feels organic. Just enough politics to know it is going to be a headache for Esra to deal with and already a few likable allies, as well as a potential foe in Cordelia.I look forward to learning more about Esra, her old and new world, and her relationship with Damion and Sere. (and their bond with each other). The language is well polished, clear without being too explanatory. The author reveals the world without too many info dumps. My only issue with this is TheLastSurvivor does not write any faster!

The Martha arc is where this story earns its keep. It's built slowly — the missing ring, the cold food, the replacement ring left deliberately visible — and then the resolution lands somewhere you don't expect. Esra doesn't forgive Martha out of weakness, and she doesn't punish her out of cruelty. She dismantles the situation like a puzzle, arranges the sister a job, sends Martha's wages home, and then slaps her once as the official punishment. Done. The slap as administrative procedure is darkly funny in exactly the right way.
And then: "I will remember that." Three words after learning the sister's name. No speech, no sentiment. Just that. It's the best character moment I've read on this site in a while.
The voice carries everything here. Dry, precise, occasionally startled by its own body — five pushups as a genuine achievement, choking on a cupcake, being carried to bed by a man who shouldn't move that fast. The humor never announces itself, which is why it works.
My main gripe is that the previous life on Earth is almost entirely absent. "What a worthless existence" is all we get, which is a deliberate choice but flattens the tension between Esra's two identities that the first chapter seemed to promise. The magic system introduction is handled well though — Anias demonstrating instead of lecturing, and the absent Gift as a hook.
If the Martha arc is the floor, this story has a high ceiling.

I just read all the reviews and realized how drastically different the experience can be depending upon your preferences.
I either do not care or do not see the glaring errors others have found!
Also I thought I reviewed it already but I only gave it 4.5 stars, the reason for this is simple, so I stick with the story and are the actual writing good. Yes I stuck and it is well written.
It certainly have holes here and there but nothing that diminishes the story for me.

It's an enjoyable read for the most part, if you gloss over the holes. Interesting concept, well written, the characters are fleshed out well, and so far it's been a good read. The progression is pretty darn quick though, almost excessively so. Some more time between the major events would probably some good, ya know.

I really wanted to like this, it had such a promising start, but I guess I should have paid more attention to the first point of 'drama' and taken it as a red flag, with how randomly it appeared and how brusquely it was resolved.
From a technical perspective the writing is really good, its actually really easy and dynamic to read. I did not find myself frustrated by dialogue or how things were described. This is annoyingly rare, so I will give the author props for that.
The issue the story has is that there is no coherent logic to the plot, interactions, or setting/worldbuilding themselves, no matter how well they are described. It's as if we have a roulette with all kinds of interactions and plot points and the author just spins it to see what will happen.
The internal consistency between of events / dialogue also seems to not exist, like characters just forget or ignore that things happen, or do things...randomly??? There is little sense, motivation or reason for a lot of things (again, roulette wheel) and it gets a bit much.
All I can say is: read until the first actual conflict, and see if you can tolerate it. I tried, I read further, but that one event, and the subsequent handling thereof shattered my suspension of disbelief, and I started noticing problems every few paragraphs to the point that I really can't anymore.

Just like the comments below chapters 7 / 8, I simply could not get past the story's first conflict. The justification given is complete nonsense.
Sure the adults are friends and the girl is a completely trained noncombatant and that means that somehow a insult over dinner means that she's forced into a duel that none of the adults agree with. Oh and that same chapter is the first time we even hear about such things.
I really wanted to like the story because the premise is interesting and the first five chapters are well-written. But it completely falls apart at chapter six.
