The Dao of Magic

Description
Here I am, sitting on a mountain so far away from civilisation it might as well be the godforsaken arse of the world, about to ascend. Can't wait to leave this crapfest of a planet... Turns out that the higher ups decided that an unaffiliated rogue like me is too big of a risk to let run around free.
Seems like this entire cultivation world is a late stage capitalist money making machine for the powers that be in the higher realms, and me stealing the good loot in front of their descendants and sect disciples noses finally pissed them off enough to take action.
First, they sent all the sect masters and hidden dao protectors to off me - which failed, obviously. Heh, afterwards they simply bitch slapped me out of their universe though.
That is interesting and all, but I just woke up in a valley watching some critters murder each other while trying not to freak out about how bad it smells here.Soo… where the fuck am I? Why is that deer fighting a feathery squirrel? Why am I teaching this baby rabbit saved from a cannibalistic mother how to kick beings in the face with the power of qi?Releases a couple of times a week!

- TarzanRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0A very unique story. It's not often you find a story that is completely original, or do differently written it feels original. Just starting reading. Trust me you'll enjoy it.

What is the Dao of Magic?
At it's core, it's a deconstruction fic of xianxia fics and their various tropes starring a person from the real world who shows the appropriate reaction towards such a warped world and rejects it completely. The various cultivation systems that xianxias tend to gloss over is broken down thoroughly in this story, analyzed and repurposed to suit the MC's needs. The setting is rather fantastical, as one might expect from the title, but there are certainly several bits of interesting locations and races that the story focuses upon. Our MC, Teach, has depth to his character, that's slowly revealed throughout the story. Not only that, various side-characters are given their own motivations and personality, rather than becoming setpieces for the MC to show off to.
Speaking of showing off, don't expect this to be an overpowered MC story. Teach is powerful, yes, but he is certainly facing an uphill struggle and he does make mistakes. If you are reading this story for the first time and see the reviews about the story not making sense in the second half, there IS a spoileriffic reason for that.
Ugh, Spoiler thing isn't working:
Nexus is mindfucking the entire planet. Teach is not immune to this problem, despite what he thinks.
The problem is that this story gets released piecemeal at a time, instead of a whole book, so there are dozens of chapters where the MC's (and cast's) actions seem completely nonsensical before a proper explanation is given. Honestly speaking, if you're reading this story for the first time, now is probably the best time to do so as the first major antagonist has been dealt with. - CalaventeRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0This story grew on me:
the science of cultivation,
the randomness of the education of disciples,
the story behind the current world.
I'm just afraid that it'll take so much time to ascend from the current planet that no more energy would remain in the author to continue bring the fight of "scientific Dao" into the cultivation world. - The SpectatorRoyal Road★★★★ 3.5Read till chp 119 until dropped. With constant pov changes, to a MC who's character is all over the place, creates a mediocre story telling. What happened to a 1000yr old cultivator? Is he going through puberty or just a delusional brat. There's no rising action, only a wana OP god MC at best. The rest can be sum up to him running a daycare with a godly rabbit. Pretty stupid how the romance happens, but the general plot of the story is great. Besides that, this fiction is 2 steps up from the general chinese novels.
Rate: 3.75 - The Defenestrated TypewriterRoyal Road★★★ 3.0The beginning is nice and it has some fun characters but the longer the story goes the less sense it starts to make.
Instead of a story about a guy from a cultivation world exploring the fantasy world he's been thrown into, it rapidly becomes an OP main character stomping all over everything and deliberately reducing it into an anarchic mess.
There are never any consequences for anything just a thin justification that "they all had evil auras so they deserved it". Also the main character never really gets called out on any of his blatant nonsense, he'll shout about how he's all for "unrestricted freedom" which is why he's letting everyone do whatever they want and anytime something might actually go wrong its all okay because its part of a secret perfect plan he used his mega-brain powers to calculate.
Fact is if the MC actually was anything like the 1000-year-old smart guy he claims to be then he could have avoided almost all of the problems he faces by simply not being a moron in the beginning. If he had actually taken the time to plan things and do them properly this could have been a really great story, instead, he just blows everything up when he feels like it.
Basically this story is "all for the lolz" so if thats what you like then go ahead, just don't think about the story to much or it all collapses - Cruiser221Royal Road★★★ 3.0It had an interesting start and premise, but kinda devolves as chapters went by. The MC had been interesting yet a bit annoying. If I had to describe how he is in one word, it'd be "pepega". His humor is immature, and while it can hit, it overstays it's welcome. The MC also appears to be lacking character development. When mistakes happen, he doesn't seem to really learn from it and often keeps repeating it (not listening to his instincts, not taking it seriously, lack of preparation, etc.). His personality also doesn't shift at all throughout the story except just getting a bit softer. It's a dissapointment of such an aged cultivator.
The side characters, on the other hand, are actually pretty interesting. They offer a much needed reprive from Teach's stupidity and bring interesting stuff to the table. However, because of Teach being the MC, interesting problems or aspects of their character are often brushed aside for Teach (Yes, even if there are a sizable amount of chapters dedicated towards these characters).
The world building is alright, though it could be much better. Some parts of it are interesting, but others just seem to be random and not well thought out.
All in all, not a bad read, just wish we had a better MC. - piens15Royal Road★★ 2.0Ha... It was a good story key word is was. Sidecharacters were well developed and the mystery behind the world kept me thinking.
Then the sect chapters started Teach sets up a system, dumps all teaching and order keeping responsibility to his students and fucks off to do other shit. Any attempts to enforce order backfire (since chaos is encouraged?) and its a mess overall. Basicly the iner faction stuff is nonsense and the chapters lately fell rushed and unclear (dont even have a clue what is going on somtimes now.)
Have read untill chapter 122. - WeaknessRoyal Road★ 1.0Readable but huge plot holes. The biggest issue is that the protag is supposed to be over 1000 but thinks and acts like a juvenile. This is because the author did not know how an ancient person would act and instead likely projected how he himself would act. Considering the author is not over 1000, we end up with a glaring disconnect in the story where the protag should be wise, cynical, knowledgeable, etc, yet he thinks like a preteen. The author doesn't seem to have any semblance of age related empathy, as the story states that the protag was transported to the cultivation world when he was 10 years old, yet in order to fit in, he pretended his injuries were related to trauma and thus never spoke, slowly learning to integrate. It even mentions how the protag thought of acting like a war victim. Which 10 year old child would even think of doing something as complicated as that? Which 10 year old child do you know that recognizes the symptoms of trauma and can accurately portray them for years themselves? The answer is none, and the fact that this story is so high up on the ratings shows me how brain dead the average reader is.
Add to that the inconsistent grammar and you get the work of an amateur. Worth a look if you're bored but expect to drop it quickly. I couldn't stomach anything after ch 5 and dropped it, and I read badly translated wuxias. It's just that bad.
If you're taking a long BM in the bathroom and you want a laugh, by all means, read this. Otherwise, don't bother wasting your time.
