- pengabtRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is a story where the author's experience as strength is palpable. So much so that I haven't noticed any weaknesses that mayhaps pose a balancing weight. What a story this is, really.
We are immediately plunged into a world that primarily focuses, or, better said, motions alongside a phenomenon called The Sieve. Regardless of me being in the developing stages, everything, and I mean everything seems to be clearly well thought out. It is evident that the author has put a lot of thought into creating this narrative which includes one singular aspect that really stood out to me, which was the magic system. It felt intriguing. It felt authentic. It felt natural. And that is not to say that the characters don't feel so, as well. I really enjoyed reading the dialogues because they flowed so well in my mind. It has been a while since I've last read a story, not to mention a high fantasy story that doesn't have a well-established base. What I mean by this is the environmental aspects of a story that encapsulate the core elements. There are characters like Lavastro and Gem that simply feel as authentic as the main protagonists. I find it highly important when someone writes a multi-perspective story to, well, write a multi-perspective story! And the fact that this story pulls this *difficult* aspect of writing so well is commendable. This is a story worth to read! - Ben HowardRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The Book of End's End: Fighting Dogs is a serial that's been in the works for a while, and from the quality, you can tell!
Style
The writers clearly have a rich vocabulary. The writing style is ambitious, and there's an undeniable skill I must applaud. However, while it is impressive, here lies my one real gripe with the story: sometimes less is more. This is somewhat hypocritical of me to say, considering some of the flaws in my own work. Though it's having made this same mistake myself that makes it so clear to me. Things would flow better if some sentences weren't so flowery. A rich vocabulary can very easily lead to purple prose if left unchecked, even if I wouldn't quite go so far as to call it completely purple yet.
I don't mean to be overly critical here, or even nitpicky. This seems to be a passion project and the redeeming qualities far outweigh the bad. Though I do believe a little simplification here and there is the quickest route of improvement I can see here.
Story
Arguably the strongest point. The worldbuilding, magic, and plot are all intricately thought out, the details of which are being drip-fed in a satisfying slow-burn. Especially the magic — the different spheres/strands of magic seem to be at the core of the world, with highly-original names and a very cool set of skills wielded by the main characters. Pacing has been nice so far, with the plot progressing at a steady rate, with time being taken to develop the central trio. Which, as we'll discuss below, are a close second for strongest point.
Grammar
Little to no problems here! The writers know what they're doing.
Character
Every character is more than meets the eye. The initial, almost one-dimensional asshole of Unity soon develops into a multi-faceted character that intrigues me deeply. This isn't to say the others don't possess interesting backstories either, though much is to be revealed. One caveat here is that I wish we learnt more about the protagonist earlier on so we have something t - SkarbertRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0What most impresses me about this book, is how the two authors worked together through years of determination to iron out the setting and through multiple drafts got this thing written.
While the gunpowder fantasy world they've created isn't my usual go to, the passion and thought that's been put into this is amazing.
Five Stars well deserved. - akizawaRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is an excellent high-fantasy story. The writing style is descriptive and evocative. It draws me in with vivid details of the setting and action sequences, helping me visualize the world and immerse in the story.
The plot provides an entertaining premise for adventure. Entering a mysterious competition called Sieve with shifting alliances and dangerous obstacles keeps things interesting. Details are revealed at a good pace to keep questioning what happens next. The dynamic between the three main characters in particular drives the continuous development of the overarching storyline.
The grammar and syntax used were clear and consistent throughout. Word choice and sentence structure flowed smoothly to convey the story elements effectively. No glaring errors stood out that would impede understanding or enjoyment of the narrative. The dialogue was also realistically written to match the various personalities. Technical magical terms were introduced in a way that integrated naturally with descriptive language.
Each of the three main characters has distinct yet nuanced personalities that become increasingly fleshed out. Their diverse backstories, abilities, and motivations for participating in the competition give dimensional depth. Interactions and revelations about the characters progressively shape the dynamic between them. The balance of mystery and disclosed details for each character maintains suspense and intrigue. - All for TommorowRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0A couple minutes into the book and you can already tell that this isn't a lackluster project. Each character is well thought out and has depth. I can tell a lot of ideation and thought went into each character's magic and personality as they've so far stayed true and haven't acted like different people (which we often see in most books).
I'd love to know more about the magic system, I love how each sphere of magic affects the mystics mind and emotions. Also the fact that not all supernatural are considered mystics is very intriguing. Plus, the suspense....
If I could rate this a 6 out of 5 I definitely would.
Everyone should have the chance of reading this at least once. - Crimson253Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is one of those stories you are amazed to find on royalroad. It reads like a published story that's going high in the charts on Amazon. Simply a wonderful read, I read every chapter the moment it comes. Though I do find that a story like this is not finding much traction on rr because of its pace. The slow pace at times, though used for world building and establishing the setting, might set off some reader's on site who are more accustomed to faster paced stories with nonstop action.
The characters are all written well with every character feeling like distinct personalities who are very easy to seperate and imagine. They all behave in very realistic ways to any event that occurs. This isn't a small feat by any means, to establish lifelike characters is not something I see everyday on this site. Very well done.
The grammar and style is perhaps the one which surprised me the most. Not simply just free of grammar mistakes (not any that I've noticed as of yet), the way of writing is very professional and you can truly feel that the story has been well thought over. The way the pov changes from chapter to chapter is very natural and feels needed in each instance for extrapolation. It also helps that I am a sucker for multiple perspectives so that's a win in my book.
In summary, very well done, can't wait to read more! I hope the author feels proud and plans to publish this when the story or book is finished. - Denwa MacskaRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0What happens when you throw three characters into a team, each carrying a little secret? And in the middle of an exam that could cost each of them their lives? The author picks up on these questions at the beginning to solve them bit by bit - built in a magical world with a dark touch.
Story: What the author manages wonderfully is to make the reader curious. The story unfolds slowly but holds the reader's attention with questions and suspicions building up between the main characters. The tension is palpable in some scenes and the minor squabbles add sporadic charm you can believe. There's a genuine feeling that things have been coordinated and that efforts have been made to build an interesting, magical system that everyone can fit into. It compensates for the slow start. If you stick with it and get carried away by the mystery of certain circumstances of the characters, you will definitely get your fill.
Style: The events of the story are rounded off with the author's picturesque writing style. Time is taken to create the setting, draw characters and use every gap to clearly underline the tension in the proceedings. Especially in battle scenes, the style shines and draws you straight into the action.
Characters: Not all characters are made to be liked - that's probably what the author thought here. We have three main characters who could hardly be more different. The joke: what one probably perceives as unpleasant turns into the other's favourite. The characters show different sides of themselves and are all careful not to act stupid. But as teenagers are, there are arguments, swearing, and it takes a lot of effort to slowly move towards each other. The conversations between the three of them really breathe life into the story and are fun to read most of the time!
Grammar:
The weakest aspect of this book is the grammar. Besides often wrong punctuation in verbal speech, there are also a few words that are misplaced to wrong in their sentences. Fortunately, the latt - Grubbing00dRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is a well written story, and a nice change of pace from the usual LitRPGs and what not. I'm excited to see how the plot develops. Not that I have anything against LitRPGs, just, you know. Anyways, read this if you're looking for a gritty story with a cast of interesting characters.
- MissAlexandrinaRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0There are some stories which, you can immediately tell, were written with love from their authors. This is unmistakeably one of them. Every part of the world and the magic system is evidently well-crafted; the authors can't wait to share it all. The vast majority of the time this is seamless, the mechanics being dripfed to the reader. Even on the handful of occasions where it veers into too much exposition (a brief moment where the character Ethi describes her homeland), it comes across as endearing rather than clunky. This is not a cobbled-together piece. This is something which has clearly been worked on for years.
Stylistically it's wonderful. The images that bookmark each chapter really set the vibe for the world - it feels like a fantasy dystopia, a setting where an oblivious upper class and an angry lower class are at odds. This isn't handled preachily, though. Nor is it hammered home too often. The text supports and enhances the pictures, and vice-versa, supplementing this picture of the world in which our characters inhabit.
As for characters - well, that's the biggest strength so far in a very strong story. The main trio are immediately clear in terms of personality, and their evolution is both apparent and a joy to watch. Side characters are also well-developed (perhaps not as much, but I suspect this is down to us spending less time with them so far). By Chapter 3 I was not only reading the story to find out more - I was synthesising fan-theories about the characters, the direction they are going to take. If your characters are so strongly written that readers are able to theorise based on their personalities, you know your characters are very strong.
The story itself is strong. It seems to have bits of "The Hunger Games" and the classic Doctor Who serial "The Happiness Patrol" in it, among other influences - but it's not just ripping these influences off. We're immediately given a situation where our main characters are forced to work together through ch - ParogarRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I’m really glad I found The book of End’s End: Fighting Dogs. I wasn’t sure what to expect when reading it, but it left me pleasantly surprised at every turn. Though the novel is in its beginnings, if it continues on the way it began, it’s going to be one to remember.
First, I just want to say that I am really glad to see high fantasy posted on Royal Road. High fantasy is easily one of my favorite genres, and while I love Lit RPGs as well, I’ve been distressed recently to see that many authors are forgoing high fantasy in exchange for either low fantasy (like ASOIAF) or Lit RPG. High Fantasy is and will always be the cornerstone of the entire fantasy genre, and I’m so glad to have discovered this entry into it.
In The Book of End’s End: Fighting Dogs, the author begins the story immediately and with little preamble. From the very first word on the very first page, we are immediately dropped into the world of mystics and magic. Crow is a 15-year-old boy, and he finds himself in a dark, prison-cell-like environment that soon reveals itself to be so much more. Crow, we discover, is what is known as a mystic, and we quickly learn that he’s participating in a Sieve, which is a contest that mystics can take part in each year. Despite having arrived alone, Crow realizes that he will need to be part of a team if he wants to have any chance of winning. And so right from the get go, we have all the makings of an adventure, with him joining forces with a combative but highly talented twerp named Unity and a more level-headed girl named Ethi. It isn’t long before the three of them are waging magical battles against animated suits of armor while navigating their contrasting personalities and learning to trust one another, such as with knowledge of their abilities.
It isn’t long before we discover that Crow is no ordinary mystic. He’s a tetramage, capable of using seven spheres of magic. This book has an extremely diverse, varied magic system that draws you right in. Magic is in
