- CobaltWolfRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0It has taken me many months to say that I have found something on this site that is unquestionably "So bad it is good". You have no idea how happy I was reading this. I cannot complain about anything, because it is perfect the way it is. Any changes to make this story better would make it worse. It's closer to Eye of Argon than My Immortal, but the latter was intentionally bad. I truly believe the author wanted this to be a good story, and it sort of is, but in the worst way possible. If the series wasn't committed to the bit of being a serious story about an underdog mage with a weird class becoming the hero, it would just be mediocre. But the fact that it is running forward directly into a brick wall with no regard for grammar, story, character or anything a story should generally have makes it perfect in my eyes.
I guess I should start with grammar, because that's the most important part. The author is ESL, and it shows. The grammar and word choice is messy, and there are constant typos. It's definitely got the "Finished at 11:59 PM with a 12:00 AM deadline", and I love it. People just talk and there is no consistency, minimal capitalization of names and so many weird quirks that are out of left field. But, like the bad grammar in My Immortal, its part of the charm? It might put some off, but I love it. The style is also non-existent, because the only style it has is... blunt? The end of the third chapter had me smiling from ear to ear with the weird tone and style shift, and the sudden image of a spooky face (which I assume was AI Generated) just for effect.
Story and character are about as generic as they come, but done with little tact or awareness of the central aspects of the genre that make it work. Underdog stories of a person getting a weird class and becoming stronger than everyone else tend to require some genuine introspection and on the fly thinking, and I think the weird exposition dumps the characters do are for this? The dumps come out of nowhere a - HippioScipioRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0There is a lot to like about this book and I especially appreciate how far it has come since the last time I reviewed it which was a while ago. The characters, grammar, and worldbuilding are all much more refined, and the plot progression is nice and enjoyable.
Overall I recommend it. - PrinceofPersiansRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5This story has potential to be good. But it needs to get someone to help. The actual writing and what the author is saying is something. The idea is definitely there! Will follow and continue reading. I would highly recommend sending the story in to someone on Fiverr and getting a cheap edit done on them if that helps the story along!
- ScruffedUpRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0Edits were made, so I am upping the score and fixing my review up.
+.5 stars for actively editing and working on the book, improving is one of the best parts about writing after all.
Story:
The story itself is a rather typical "oh big day time for X skill / magic to be chosen" type deal. The writing has been fixed a bit since my review, the emoji's were removed and some other edits were made so that it feels a bit more smooth.
Story is rather early on, so a lot of the 'themes' of it are either so early that I can't really comment on them in a review or aren't worth going into yet, time will tell though how well they are done in the later stages of the book.
My recommended* chapter length is roughly 3k, as it is commonly seen as the lower average of words in chapters for professionally published books.
Style:
So the story has a decent 'weak to strong' type of set up to it, rather common since that is how most stories start and end. "This magic class is inferior" "nuh-uh the class is actually OP" is something we see a lot in asian-manga (especially chinese and japanese ones, I don't know what they have against themselves that they keep rewriting the same story 15 times but whatever)
Since the story is a bit early on I can't really comment on how 'well' the author has pulled it off, but the author has shown a willingness to take advice and improve, from fixing chapter names to removing emojis and other stuff, so I have faith that they'll do their story justice.
As for how well they've done the world building and exploration, we got a bit of it, but we are still a bit light on understanding how the world works, which makes sense in a way since we are reading from the POV of a child.
-chapters are short, already done and moving on
Grammar:
There are a few spelling errors and literary errors in the book. That's about it.
Characters:
I really don't have anything negative or positive to say about the characters, they just exist. Most of them are just kids, and the adults ar - LexifveRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0Stories that are good comes plenty. Stories that are fun, meanwhile, are at times rare. The Barriard might not be good, but it is fun to follow. Is this a good story? No. The writing is still rough, the story is normal, and the characters are still moving due to events. Is this a fun story? Yes. Chosen ones are fun, the characters might move according to plot (like seeking conflict for plot, explanation for plot (though it doesn't strike me as infodump)) but the personalities are rather interesting, and it just have this fun/enjoyable/adventurous atmosphere to the writing.
Put simply: this isn't one of those good heavy thematic stories that go something like 'I gotta sell illegal blue stuff to get money for my cancer treatment' or 'those one race that could turn into giants at a bite is threatening us so now we gotta eliminate em'. It's more of a fun, light, enjoyable stories that go something like 'turns out I'm the chosen one' and you just wanna know what happens next.
All in all, style is still rough but I sense fun/enjoyment to it, grammar is still somewhat rough but definitely could improve with knowledge, story is enjoyable, and characters are interesting.
Lightweight story like this one has an appeal of its own~ - Demonic HeavenRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0Disclaimer! This review is based after the first two chapther!
The story is set in a fantasy world with a bit of a twist that was revealed in the second chapter. Most of the world seems to be set in medieval times but there is a hint of technology. The world follows the rule of RPG with classes which are four basic with subclasses and there are four kingdoms representing each of the roles.
The beginning tells us about the war with demons and a hero of a different class from the title "Barriard" which sets an interesting class set around barrier type of magic which sounds basic but by the information given it sounds like a power with lot of potential.
At first, I was caught off guard by the mention of the technology and was as surprised as the children in the story but it seems very interesting. Four kingdoms and each one of them will most likely be fundamentally different. It might be the story's pros as well as cons depending on how they will be shown.
The main character seems at first like an ignorant child but his interaction with children shows a different face.
I can't tell a lot from just two chapters but the story got me intrigued enough that I'll read more in the future and update my review! - JoeyDeLeenRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0This story has great potential and a lot of heart to it. I’ll go through the four subcategories here.
Style
The style is fairly consistent after the first chapter (which might be better as a prologue or worked into the story in a different way). There’s a good mix of conversation vs. description.
In some places the author writes in an extremely wide viewpoint which can be a hard sell as it can be difficult to know who is experiencing what. The story rapidly jumps from viewpoint to viewpoint, so sometimes we’re seeing things from Ric’s point of view, sometimes from others around him. It is usually better to try and keep to one viewpoint, and use ‘show not tell’ to express other character’s thoughts and reactions.
In some places the writing is really good. The nightmare scene in particular struck me as being well paced, with some vivid imagery. The author is also adept at describing scenes where characters are learning to use their powers.
Story
The overarching plot is a classic call to adventure. There are some intriguing tropes involved, such as the foreshadowing that the main character might be either a hero or a monster and the way current events mirror those of the past.
The idea of a class based around making barriers is an interesting point of difference, as is the mixture of fantasy and modern technology. To some extent I think the plot
Character
The characterization of the protagonist in particular is a strong point of this story. However, when the writing feels rushed in some places, that characterization gets muddied which is a shame.
There’s an example of this right at the start.
Ric is described as being an intelligent, scholarly person, but in the first scene he gets lumped in with other children and therefore portrayed as being in awe at a story that presumably the kids of that world would hear all the time, if it were a huge part of their history.
It seemed bizarre to me that a smart, scholarly 15 year old would not already know everything that is reve - ShiverSmithRoyal Road★★★★ 3.5I am rating this story as middle of the road for me. It has decent plot as far as I can tell with the incredibly limited information we have so far. The one complaint I have about the plot is that it is so incredibly cliche.
The other problem with this story is the grammar. The author misspells words left and right, has formatting issues that shouldn’t be there, but he doesn’t bother to go through his chapters and edit them before hand.
Another thing. This story takes itself far too seriously. It’s one of those “villain lost his memory and now becomes the hero” stories as far as I can tell, but there is too much dichotomy in the characters. I like a good foil character, but this is just over the top.
The characters have those “I want to be better” moments, but that is pretty much all they have. The character development is lacking.
Over all, though, it’s decent. Not great, not good, but decent. I like it.
