===========================================What to expect in this story:1. A slow, classic progressive fantasy narrative that focuses not only on the characters but also on the intricacies of magic, spells, and the individuals who practice them.
2. No blue boxes.3. The main character, while deeply passionate about magic and the mystic arts, struggles with her own inability to wield it. She possesses a vast knowledge of magic trivia and learns to control her anxiety over time in order to prevent her habitual impulsive actions.4. Nerd Scottish GF.5. Continuing the point above, MC is "Scottish" (inspired) so expect some of the dialects and the foreign terms as part of the world-building. But along the way, the dialect will be reduced along with MC travelling outside her hometown. The translations for these terms will be provided in a dedicated glossaryhere. Feel free to share your feedback regarding any terms that may have been overlooked.===========================================Title: ThaumaturgyAuthor: RestuIbuArt cover:BajigurTag: Action, Fantasy, Magic, R18

- drifter265Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0The author's style is verbose. You really get a good idea of what's going on. There seems to be a great mixture between action, dialogue, description, and narrative, which is not something I find often here.
The author's grammar is impeccable. I think I only found one puncuation mark in what I've read. Good job.
Before the story really begins, we get some delightful world building and relateable character development, which I really prefer in stories. We recieve a vast overview of who Alicia really is with her mageless qualities, her family and friends, and the world of magic with good and evil involved. We're immersed in the idea that there are some elements of the hero's journey here with ordinary beginnings transforming into attaining a higher power that will defeat the evil the story hints at.
Many interesting characters here to draw from with what I've read, and I didn't have to get very far to build this criticism. It doesn't feel like too many in the cast either. It's a great blend and they're all pretty unique with a different relationship and different kind of support to Alicia. I know they're going to be a great addition for her journey ahead and I'm glad they were incorporated well before the story actually begins with the magic orb that's discovered for her to get magic.
All in all, I had a fun time discovering the story and am not surprised with the traction its developing on the site. - VVerityRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0An interesting submission into the halls of progression novels, this novel stands out from the pack because it's one of the few I've come across with a strong focus on a female lead character!
Style
This is a strongly detailed story with the interesting flourish of its own in-world dialect being introduced. This dialect not only isn't just in the phonetics of a word, but also contains information on the culture and beliefs of the setting.
Story
This seems to be shaping into a chosen one-esque story, with Alicia finding the ORB and gaining power from it... while also dooming herself to be in the target sights of others. The progression of the plot is logical and makes sense, rather than it falling into the standard rut of many progression stories where it just becomes "kill thing, gain +439 progression points, gain next thing, etc". There's an actual tale to be told here!
Character
This is the only place where I feel the need to remove half a star, and even then I expect with future chapters and some editing this'll still be great. Sometimes Alicia, who we are told is an intelligent young lady, makes some very strange choices. Gilmore and Nadine help support her and have their own personality and wants, ensuring Alicia doesn't become the object of orbit however, and she still remains an interesting character.
All in all, this is a story very much worth your time! Especially if you enjoy progression novels that are off the beaten path! - WhatZitTooyaRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Perhaps since this is the author's first shot at dropping this novel as a webnovel, there are a few weaknesses that are apparent here. But the author has been picking up the ropes as the chapters roll out, and after reading the last chapter in the first book, it is safe to say that this is an underrated work that needs more eyeballs.
Still, weakness number one: things are a bit slow in the early chapters. Sure, there's foreshadowing, a bit of mystery, and so on, but the hooks only start to appear after the first fight scene. Weakness number two: the Scottish accent which, while it adds an interesting flavor to the story, it might throw you off if you're not used to it. Nevertheless, I'm gradually growing accustomed to it, and fortunately, it diminishes as the MC ventures beyond her hometown.
Like I said, after the first fight scene, that's where the narrative starts to gain momentum onwards. A lot of things happen throughout the story to make this slow-burn work not feel like a slow-burn. The world-building is captivating, featuring not only an English backdrop and Norse mythology but also incorporating myths from the author's hometown, introducing elements like Javanese and Balinese mythology, which I think is new in Royal Road.
Grammar-wise, there aren't any glaring mistakes other than the use of italics for slangs that you might not be used to, but it's not a big deal. The characters and battle scenes are probably the two strongest points in this book. The interactions between the characters don't feel flat and one-dimensional. There are quite a few fight scenes throughout the book, and the enemies are unique. I won't spoil the details but the last chapters of the first book is one of my favorite moments.
For a Progression Novel, the MC's progression is visible here, although I wish the progression could be something bigger in scale. But given the premise of this story, it's going to be a long one and Alicia will definitely have a significant progression of her p - Anti_HeroesRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Style: The author employs vivid descriptions to bring the world of Thaumaturgy to life, allowing me to easily visualize the environment. The prose flows smoothly, creating a seamless reading experience. The pacing of the narrative is well-balanced, keeping me engaged. The author's use of figurative language and evocative imagery enhances the storytelling.
Story: From the initial premise of Alicia being an outcast due to her lack of magical abilities to her unexpected selection by the otherworldly orb, the plot grips my attention from the start. The introduction of relentless pursuers and Alicia's perilous journey adds suspense and a sense of urgency to the narrative. The exploration of the diverse tapestry of mystic arts and the clash between Alicia's ideals and the harsh realities of the world deepen the story's thematic layers. The progression of the plot maintains a steady momentum, unveiling new revelations and challenges that keep me eagerly turning the pages.
Grammar: The writing is clear and concise, making it easy for me to follow the narrative without distractions.
Character: The author skillfully portrays Alicia as a determined and curious individual, driven by her belief in the positive potential of magic. One notable aspect of this story is the authentic portrayal of the characters. Alicia, Nadine, and Gilmore share a deep bond that feels genuine. The dynamic between them is beautifully crafted, forged since childhood, and is palpable, adding a delightful layer of camaraderie to the narrative. The supporting characters exhibit depth and contribute to the overall richness of the story.

The writing is expertly crafted, the story is engaging and imaginative, and the characters are well-defined and engaging. I highly recommend this story to lovers of dark fantasy! ♥ - Mr Alex666Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0This one is delicious! It reminds me of Scooby Doo and Buffy in some ways.
It isn't serious, it isn't fast-paced, it isn't bloody, it is mostly light-hearted banter of some young friends. If you are looking for an edgelord, this isn't a story for you. Otherwise, you would hit a jackpot with this! The worldbuilding in the very first chapter was brilliant, informing the reader about the background in a fairytale way, congrats for that!
The story is extremely slow to unfold - if you want the first dozen Levels within the first chapter, bad luck - the first ten chapters cover around a day, with the characters mostly doing nothing (well, besides finding a magical orb in an abandoned cemetery). I actually liked the slow pace, not everything should be about killing dragons in the first chapter or two. 5
Character: So far, the cast looks like well developed and lifelike, the MC is - while a bit of an airhead - is relatable and sympathetic. Her background, having no magick, is detailed, and gives her depth, without reading a CV. A very funny (slightly irresponsible and incompetent) cast, even the idiotic things they do (kmmm... cemetery), is well within character. I did enjoy the constant banter, but it may not be to everyone's taste. 5
Style: I do like dialects, and is mostly fun to hear (if you don't have to filter out the information), and "normal" English slang I can more-or-less understand. However, when it comes to gaelic idioms... This is the story's biggest problem while still giving it a unique vibe. It was very much fun to read it, even if I didn't understand half of what was said. I honestly can't say, what to do - getting rid of all those Scottish phrases would rise the readability for non-natives, while taking away a lot of the story's charm. If not for the dialect, I would give a glowing five, since it is simply delicious, but with factoring it in, a 4 it is.
Grammar: the author uses the UK-spelling, so many things I would peg as "mistakes" are probably absolut - R. K. WintersRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I'm only reviewing for the first part of the story, but I'm definitely looking forward to reading more
Style:
I'd say the author, above all else, makes it very natural to read. Paragraphs are spaced well, lines vary in length, dialogue is interesting, and where a reader might not know some of the terms, the author has very handily used footnotes to explain certain words.
Characters:
So far, I'm feeling that each character has a distinctive voice that makes it easy to tell apart who is who even without speech tags, they seem to be characters thought-out rather than made up on the spot. The slang definitely helps and I absolutely read Gilmore in the thickest possible scottish accent I could muster. - FlossinduneRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5The story follows Alicia Crimsonmane, the black sheep of her family due to the lack of magical powers. As an accelerated student, she's smart as a whip and, if it weren't for the unfortunate problem of being without magic, would undoubtedly be someone that others would take seriously.
Story: The first few chapters put an emphasis on Alicia's life without magic, from school to her friends to her family. It does a great job painting the MC as someone who is competent despite the world being unfair with the "magic gene," as she calls it. Once we understand her circumstances, everything gets flipped upside down.
Style: Thaumaturgy is written in a third person style, doing a great job of letting you know what's going on throughout the character's heads. The tone stays consistent throughout, and sets up the setting fairly well. My only complaint is that it doesn't going into detail about the type of technology is going on in this world, and whether it's science, magic, or a mixture of both. Perhaps that comes later down the line, in which case I look forward to that time.
Grammar: Not much to say here except that there are a few minor hiccups that I saw, and that the first chapter is written differently from the rest. Chapter two picks up a Scottish dialogue, which seems to be missing in the first.
Characters: The banter between the characters is top notch, and you can tell that the author has put a lot of thought into their personalities. Each of them have a clear purpose in the story and are a genuine delight to read.
All in all, a hearty recommend. - ScruffedUpRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5I think the story is decent, a bit slow to take off but it is written well.
Style:
The story takes a bit to really get going, but the world building and cast are built well enough that it isn't glaring enough to be an issue. The story takes its time explaining the world. with helpful author prompts at the end of the chapters to explain context clues that we don't understand, such as saying or phrases that were made for the story, keeps the story flowing without explaining everything and adds to the culture a good bit. Overall I enjoy the style of the story. 4/5
Story:
The writing is decent, chapter lengths are fine, and its entertaining enough as it is to keep someone who enjoys the genre engaged. Overall I think its good 5/5
Grammar:
I haven't seen any grammital errors, the story has been reviewed or edited before to remove them, if they existed in the first place. 5/5
Characters:
The characters are likable, and help keep the story enjoyable. They are diverse, in the sense that they aren't just carbon copies of eachother, and help the story stay in the upper 4.5 star area. 5/5 characters.
===
Overall, while the story isn't my genre so to speak, the story itself is written well enough and enjoyable enough that someone who likes the genre will greatly enjoy it. I recommend it to anyone who is into this kinda thing.
4.5/5 well done - HippioScipioRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0I'd like to begin by saying that simultaneously the best and weakest parts of the story for me revolved around the main character and their constant use of slang. Now, on the one hand, I find it incredibly endearing and it helps a lot with characterisation and worldbuilding, but on the other hand, the sheer volume of it becomes a little much.
I really liked the first scene in Chapter 1, and I think the friendship between our 3 big characters was well executed. I also found that the plotline was engaging and worthy of following along.
TLDR: It's good, but there is just a bit too much slang for a Southern Brit like me.
