It’s really early yet (chap4) but interstellar war stories on royal road are kind of rare so I’m giving an early review to hopefully drive some interest. The story has good reading flow and while the grammar isn’t perfect it’s okay for royal road standards. Plot and characters are a little bit weak so far but I see a lot of ways the author can improve both in future chapters. The setting and promise of the story are great and why I’m giving it 4.5 stars. The humans even though they are on the backpeddle and fighting for their lives are a sleeping dragon in this story. This makes the first group of aliens seem foolish instead of evil and I’m interested in seeing where the author goes with that.

UPDATE: finished Volume 2, the writing definitely improves, particularly in the latter half of the volume. By the end, I would say story gets a 4/5, & the characters get a 3/5. Will keep the score as is, just to show how I felt for volume 1. Onward to the original review:
I'm a sucker for first contact stories, so I'd thought I'd give some constructive feedback on this one. Keep in mind I'm making this review after finishing Volume 1, so improvements could've been made later on.
Overall it's a first contact scenario between humanity and another species, with the other species being recently independent from a larger empire. However, personally it falls flat on the alien side of things. Alright let's talk specifics:
Style: overall pretty good, was rougher in the first few chapters but it quickly improves. There's adequate detail put into action scenes and such for me to know what's going on, which is great. 4/5
Story: standard first contact HFY scenario, aliens discover humanity and decide to attack, and humanity retaliates with more firepower. Nothing new or unique here, overall it's fine. Going into more details is where it falls flat for me. Without getting into spoilers, a lot of details that should be expanded upon are brushed over. It's like the author sometimes doesn't realize that we aren't in his head and so there's a lot of implicit assumptions made in explanations throughout the story. 3/5
Grammar: only an occasional spelling mistake, so no issues here. 5/5
Characters: Finally, the real crux of the issue with the story, the characters. At several points in Volume 1 I would ask "why'd they assume that?". Like the rest of the story, many characters will automatically assume the correct interpretation of something, without asking questions to themselves or others. Everything is taken at face value, and when it's not, the characters automatically know the correct interpretation. When it comes to a collective basis, the human characters are overall ok, there's

The story is okay but it does have it's flaws. Characters just seem to know things, like two men just knew at a glance that the aliens were taking slaves but there is no way they could have just known that or guessed it from how it was described in the story. Also one of those characters just wants to join what I can only assume is some elite military force just like that, with no basic training or anything, that's not how the military works.
There are some spelling mistakes here and there but nothing too major. Things like the wrong there/their/they're a few times or a word missing or another misspelled. But it's not regular so it's not a major issue for me.
The story does feel very rushed at times, there really isn't a lot of ways to get to know the characters or flesh them out much since as far as I read before stopping it's just constant action with no real breathing room. Maybe it changes later on but I just couldn't keep my interests in the story to keep going as I prefer a more well rounded story.
The story could use a bit more background to explain certain things or concepts when they are brought in. Like the whole gate travel thing, they are shown in human systems but not used by humans so who exactly made them? I think this was only vaguely hinted at having an explanation but I'm not sure.
There are a lot of characters that just come and go and the problem is we don't get any time to really get to know them or care about them in the story sometimes so when they are gone there is little to no emotional impact for it.

Too many of different POV for same event, separated so it is difficult to pinpont when it is happening.
Lots of skipped explanations which are moved further in the story.
Then the enemy manages to attack undetected, humans are not smart enought to send courier ships but must relly on civilian, defence fleets seams to come far too soon, etc.
    Also many writing mistakes.
