"Using pyrokinesis to light your cigarette was fine, but if your boss wanted to start saving money on welding torches they were gonna need to follow some strict rules to prove they weren’t gonna burn the place down."
"I am the strongest psychic in town and what do I have to show for it? I work a dead-end job at a warehouse with no health insurance."
Story
There's a mystery here. Multiple, actually. I don't want to spoil too much of it in the review, but things are constantly moving forward. The story moves; it doesn't meander, even in the slice of life portions. The story is smartly constructed without feeling "preachy" or pretentious.
Fights and action are sparing, which is the way I like it. (The action/fight scenes are used so carefully they're marked at the top of the chapters.) Things feel grounded because of that. There's a gritty undertone, but without needing over-the-top violence or leaning too much into heavy topics.
There is a strong focus on politics and civics in the story, and no, not just because the MC is a lesbian.

Characters
Characters are well-developed. MC's relationship with people who she interacts with get revealed every chapter. Villains are... not one-dimensional, that's for sure. Actually, I'm pretty sure that's the point of the story.
The only complaint here is that one of the story chapter titles actually spoils a major character development. But it shouldn't have been a surprise (?), just the timing of it.

Style
Third person limited, mostly focused on MC Alexis, but enough switching around to keep it spiced up. The switches are well done, and there are a couple (mostly one) "ohhhh" moments when it switches back. Thoughts are clear and differentiated from speech, which is important in a mystery like this; well done.
One thing that doesn't technically follow style guides is:
"Hello." She said.
When it should be:
"Hello," she said.
Not very logical, but that's t
