It's a Magically Matriarchal world, and Mark is nothing but a nobody boy, abandoned by his Mother, and raised in a Shelter like an unloved pet. Things are looking up though: a family's going to adopt him! He'll finally have a home, safety, and the comfort that comes with "belonging".

But life is never that simple. Can he overcome the stigma of being a "Shelter Boy"? Can he bring honor to his family, despite their strange beliefs? And when the time comes, can he give up what he's learned to love the most?
