Description
Ancient propheciessaythat once every thousand years, one shall rise to bring about anewage of darkness.A harbinger of evil, a being born for the sole purpose of sowing misery and disgrace.Through them, the world shall know of war, famine, pestilence and death— the four seals that herald the end of times. Besieged by the maws of evil, humankind shall suffer in agony as they watch everything they once knew be unmade before them.
To oppose such a being, the whole world has had to stand united, in the battles that came to be historically known as theGreat Holy Wars. Guided by the Saintess of Irithel, brave heroes coming from the four corners of the world had to sacrifice their lives in order to fight against the Harbinger and cast away the darkness.
Our story begins in the year 578, a bit over six hundred years since the end of the fifth holy war. In the kingdom of Valtia, a small nation belonging to the Union of Western Kingdoms, an urgent missive bearing the royal seal arrives at the hands of Earl William Taylor.
Though it might still be almost half a millennia too early for another Harbinger to be born, dark clouds already loom over the northern continent of Gram, as many bizarre events start taking place.
Follow the story of our main characters as they struggle to survive in a grim, unforgiving world.

- Easy TigerRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I'm actually amazed this story isn't getting more views. Professionally written, brilliantly paced, an intriguing premise. Some pretty graphic and strong adult content throughout, but that shouldn't be enough to deter anyone from this quality adventure. Real high quality stuff from the author. Consider yourself followed. Really enjoying the progression so far.
- YuKuroganeRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I've always been a fan of harsh settings that stack the odds against characters make you want to see them succeed. This story's no different. The start definitely got me hooked, and the more I keep reading, the more I enjoy it.
Also helps that I'm into gorey/visceral descriptions and stories, kind of like Berserk and Goblin Slayer. It's all pretty great, keep it up! - DarkVolatisRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5The prologue is rather lengthy but builds the setting just right for the rest of the story. The writing and descriptions get a lot better the further you get in as well. I didn't expect it to be so dark though it's essentially in the title lol. It ends up following multiple characters and did a decent job at making me want to know more about what would happen to them.
If you enjoy dark-themed stories then definitely give this a go, so far it satisfies that area and seems like it will only get crazier. - ElechamRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Tales of a Grim World tells you upfront what it is about. No mercy shown, no quarter given, just pure, desperate survival in a world suddenly filled with evil. If you like midnight-black Dark Fantasy, ToaGW will be right up your alley.
On to the nitty-gritty:
Style:
The prose focuses on the character's emotions as they traverse truly terrible situations. There are some stellar passages, like Alice's piano scene and Gareth's stand against evil, but the heavily evocative prose stays constant throughout.
The counterpoint here is the emphasis on explaining: a lot of information has to be covered fast, and so some paragraphs become dense with worldbuilding. Fear not, however, because characters, their views, their traumas, still come first and foremost.
Grammar:
The author has English as his second language, though you wouldn't be able to tell. Minor typos exist, but you have to actively hunt for them and you'll be too engrossed in the story to care. Tenses could use an editing passage but, again, it never gets in the way.
Story:
Here is where ToaGW truly begins to shine. Think epic. Think various POVs, all dealing with their own issues, each bringing a piece of the puzzle to a wide, continent-spanning conspiracy. What is truly going on in the world may be beyond any of them, but the reader gets to experience each fragment and piece the whole picture together himself. And this is only the beginning. I have no doubt TheHex has grand plans hidden up his sleeve and is ready to unleash them on us as soon as the plot matures a little more.
Characters:
The crème de la crème, as they should be. The eyes we see the world through are as varied as they are interesting. From an aging knight to a depraved baron, passing through lords, witches, servants, and, I'm sure, many more to come, there is no shortage of unique POVs to give insights into TheHex's brutal world.
Their difference is very well constructed. Extremes are represented, but nuance makes up the bulk of the views on disp - SiiRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0Overall:
What we have here is a very grimdark fantasy that can be quite enjoyable. With its multiple POV's I think there's plenty for readers who enjoy darker fantasy. We get some wish-fulfillment power fantasy, revenge pron, and escape pron all in the first handful of chapters. My only gripe is how beige the writing can be at times. Beige being that there are certain moments, such as the training bit, where doing less telling and more showing would help make the reading experience more visceral. While I'm still getting to know most of the characters I can say that the author has done a pretty good job of differentiating them from one another. The only one who seems a bit out of place, and I haven't read too far in, is Camille. I think I can give it a go and continue reading seeing as there is a strong base here to keep my interest.
Character & Story:
The two strongest points thus far. I think the author excels at making distinct, very hateable antagonists. The Baron and Aveline are so wonderfully hateful. The hints of the story we get so far are scintillating and I look forward to learning more about the world that the author is building. My only issue was in the beige writing. Aveline and the Baron can be so much more hateable, as antagonists, if they were given a little more time to breathe and become fleshed out. Show us how despicable the Baron is rather than telling us. I'm not trying to tell the author how to write but that's just some advice I'd like to pass along. Overall, though, I think there is a strong enough base here for it to be an enjoyable read.
Style & Grammar:
The weakest points, I understand that English is not the authors strongest point and I'm not holding that against them. I am just providing fair and honest feedback on my experience. There were plenty of points where grammar could be tightened up with some editing and some proofreading but this did not detract from my reading experience. If anything, I think this is a great attempt by someo
