- 1Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is it, this is the peak of Royal Road. The utmost pinnacle any story could dream of reaching. This is a story ENTIRELY made up of system messages, status updates, and anything else that fits into a table. Despite the popularity of the LitRPG genre, a story from a system's point of view hasn't really existed, until now, so I'm going to buckle up and expect the unexpected.
Also, creating this must take forever, the constant formatting would definately get on my nerves, so I have to offer commendation to the author for all this extra work. - Chaos JesterRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0As funny as everything being in a stat box is, Based put some serious thought and effort into this one, mixing great plot, fun characters, so many mechanics, and sheer force of will to keep this one going.
You like blue boxes? Then this is the only fic you need. - TealiciousTeaRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0They said it would be impossible but one author stood up and after hours upon hours of work they did a story with just blue boxes. Truly, this story is among thr finest works ever to grace this fine website, in part, because it is an actual story not just a joke.
The 'system' has personality and the gramar works. All in all, a fun read. - squorshRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story is great,. It takes realistic characters and puts them in a world you can't help but wonder about, and has them start unraveling its mysteries. The unique style was also really funny to see.
I don't really have anything else to say about the story but RR has a word minimum for reviews - DeathbladeISSTHRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I decided to check out "just a few chapters" and got sucked in. To be clear, I'm not exactly a huge litepg buff. In fact... I've read very little and don't consider myself to be a big fan of the genre. And from what I can tell, on a scale of 1 to 10, this is a 10 in terms of litrpg hardcoreness. Yet I had absolutely no problem and quickly got sucked in.
If you are not a big litrpg fan, the first chapter might be intimidating. It was for me. Just keep reading. You'll very quickly figure out what's going on.
If you ARE a big litrpg fan, I suspect you will dig this take.
The dynamic between the "two" main line characters is hilarious. The system is interesting to learn about. Above all the writing is just slick.
I guess if I had to pick something to say that I found negative it would be that in a few instances I got confused about who was talking, because if the unusual formatting method. But the formatting is part of the charm, so I'll just give that a pass.
Anyway, this is defintiely a thumbs up for me, and will now be on my list to recommend to hardcore fans and noobs alike. - MeowseRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0A novel written entirely in text boxes, from the perspective of an isekai'd system controlling the game, though not the actions, of an isekai'd player. Not Your Typical LitRPG.
But very fun! I'm really looking forward to seeing where the author is taking this. I'm pretty hecking far in, and it's just been getting better with time. I also really like that. I can't see where it's obviously going, that the author has kept it complex enough that I'm still not entirely clear what sub-genre of isekai LitRPG I'm reading! Is it a classic progression fantasy? An intro-to-the-apocalypse? An [I can't tell you because it might be a spoiler if I'm right]?
Proofreading is great, worldbuilding is great, characterization is great, basically everything is great. Come on in! The water's fine!
Oh, and a number of things like spell names and communications with truly alien minds are represented by words with some of the letters redacted. Which means that if you enjoy that sort of puzzle, you've got opportunities to solve them in almost every chapter. But it's not a requirement -- in every case that I've figured one of them out, it's something that eventually becomes clear from context. It's basically just a way to challenge your brain, while also getting an enjoyable level of foreshadowing-without-spoilers. - S.N. KeirsteadRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Style: Blue boxes galore. Like literally, the entire story is written in the iconic Royal Road blue box. From chat boxes to journals to level-up screens, the entire story is written with blue boxes to keep the story organized. The protagonist speaks and thinks through these boxes as well, making the story first person.
Grammar: Didn't notice any grammar mistakes while reading. Overall, a very easy and straightforward read. There are a lot of numbers though, so crunchers might will have a lot of work on their hands to make sure everything adds up. I see them go up so I just take the author's word for it.
Story: A standard fantasy system story done well. The entire world is game-like and the protagonist starts off a bit clueless but soon adapts. Not wholly original but it delivers on what it promises.
Characters: Much like the story, the characters are to be expected. Main character is awestruck by the world he's thrust in but soon adapts to the rules. Dialogue between characters is natural as well. The main character's friends (although still early) do help to provide some depth to the world and some interesting diversity to the table.
Overall, a fun and smooth read. Lots of number crunching though, so bring a calculator. Lots of math ahead. - SilverLiningsRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Yes, I'm aware the story is composed entirely of blue boxes. I'm also aware a lot of other reviews on here are satirical. But there is a story there, if you can get past the formatting enough to read it - and it's a honestly a pretty good one. Parker and Jerome are both great characters with distinct personalities and voices. All the best moments are filtered through the lens of the incredibly sassy MC, who provides great contrast with the rather more... uh... games-oriented secondary MC, shall we say.
They do really feel like people from this world and culture, which is great. There are absolutely strong elements of satire and comedy here, but it's not the entirety of the story. I say give this story a chance, and pay attention to the characters, because you'll fall in love with them quite quickly. So, getting into it:
Style:
Everything being blue boxes is obviously the joke that's sort of the central premise of the story, but beyond that, the actual writing for the characters are excellent. The style here is essentially the character voices, so it coincides with the character score a bit? Half a point off because the table format makes it a bit unclear which character is speaking/writing the blue box.
Story:
Again, satirical nature aside, there's a lot of implications about the true nature of the story. The full picture isn't exactly clear yet, but what's there is enough for me to be sure this isn't just a story making fun of boxes; it does have a plot, we're just still in the early stages of it.
Grammar:
I have no issues with the grammar.
Character:
I've said it before, but the characters are where this story shines. If you read it, read it with the intent to care about the characters it's presenting to you. The entire premise is pretty much carried by Parker's excellent voice and overall sass. - Craig CraigRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5A rare example of a story that is actually finished!
The premise seems like it was put together as a joke, but surprisingly it works.
This is the most LitRPG story you will get read. If you need more blue boxes in your life, then this story is the cure you need.
Our MC finds himself isekaied into another world, except he doesn’t arrive in his own body.
He is reincarnated into a system which is attached to another reincarnator. The only way he can communicate is through system messages and he has to figure out how to do everything
This was a fun popcorn flick, with decent characters and a plot with decent progression. Even though the whole story is told through blue boxes, the story is not as crunchy as you might assume.
I enjoyed this story and maybe you will too. - ParasolParadeRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5I really enjoyed reading this work! It gave me exactly what I was looking for, no more, no less. I haven't read many LitRPGs, so I can't speak to its orginality within the genre, but it certainly felt unique to me. It explores its core concept well, and uses that as a frame-work on which to build a small but solid cast of characters and an engaging plot.
In particular, I really liked the unique style/format and the way it was used to convey the story. There were certain aspects that were a bit lacking that would've affected my enjoyment had they not been covered by this style. For example, the prose weren't particularly impressive or unimpressive, but as the story is conveyed directly through a character's perspective and voice, they didn't have to be - the coloquial manner fits the tone perfectly.
The plot exists to explore the primary concept. It does this very well, and it doesn't do much more. This isn't an expansive story, but one that will give you a good look at exactly what you came for.
The characters aren't incredibly deep or complex, but they're definitely strong enough to hold up the story, and they have good chemistry together. Don't expect an exploration of character, but instead a group of well-written personalities to whom you can get attached (and at whose antics you can laugh a lot!).
I have a couple of minor gripes. The pacing felt a bit wonky, jumping between slow and fast in fits and starts. The ending was a bit rushed, although the conclusion was very satisfying. There were small grammar/typo issues here and there - normally not enough to be a problem, but this story uses text formatting to convey meaning, so I could understand some readers getting confused. However, I don't consider any of these problems to be serious enough to have impacted my enjoyment significantly.
Overall, a great read! I will certainly be checking out this author's other works. :)
