- DanceswithwordzRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I love a good space adventure but I love good writing even more and this author has achieved that delicious elixir of word command, storytelling, and pop culture allure! The setting and premise is so unique I’m not sure if I’m supposed to love Arthros but I do. A lot. I hope to one day own a paper copy.
- StruggoRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0What a frickin story. It's starts just like any other story but I promise the deeper you go, the more that it pays off. I can't wait to catch up. Such a good read. I can't wait to get the rest of the story. If you get a chance to check this one out, you should. I couldn't recommend this more.
- mamarednaxRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0If you enjoy the genre, you NEED to read this. This, by far, is one of the best Sci-fi stories I have read and I am confident in saying that after 8 chapters. The writing style is perfect, the ability of JR Kita to capture details that draw you into the scene is so above par that I am shocked this is our first story from him.
The world building is detailed and complex in the realistic ways that count. The species are thought out and diverse with habitats that are natural. The technology is a 10/10! Just the basics that we've been given so far (8 chapters) makes this one of the most scientifically sound stories I've read. The character development is so on point that you can feel the intangible qualities of each character and what makes them unique and it's not just for the main characters, this is for ALL characters thus far.
One thing that JR Kita excells at is fight scenes. Every one of them has gotten my heart racing and I feel as if I am there, able to feel and experience everything that is going on.
This is a ☆☆☆☆☆ story and I cannot wait for this to come out in print - I will certainly be getting myself a copy. - LOLsuitRoyal Road★★ 2.0An alien mech pilot searches for a new mech pilot recruit, and finds a human. But his race keeps humans as slaves. So, much cultural & class conflict. Then there is a human with a seat on a local government, and she hates this overlord race. She encounters a different alien that has hints of the monsters from beyond. So, plenty of conflict is setup.
But those are just the actors. The real joy is in the rich descriptions of planets & aliens that remind me of the Star Wars universe. No Jedi... but the mech pilots... they need a certain mental fortitude to integrate with the AI necessary to run the high tech mechs. So hints of other mech based sci-fi too.
Multiple POVs, each distinct. Not everyone is likeable, but they all probably think they are doing their best.
I want to know what happens next, and that is a pretty good test of a book.
But after about the halfway point, flaws start to become more apparent. Its not really a Progression story (1 number goes up twice). The military training isn't. Isn't training. And for a star empire, it is odd that we have these single actors taking up the whole stage, as if Luke in an X-wing and Vader in a Tie were 2 out of only a half dozen fighters, with 200 total elsewhere. Total. Stuff happens for drama and plot instead of the way it would reasonably happen, leading to a cascade of bad tropes.
It started well, and with promise, and lost its way.
My last edit: The story ends with no answers. That is deeply unsatisfying.
